Hello, Moms! I was just curious if there were any Reading Specialists out there or have any information on this field. I have taught for five years, but in a totally different area-Health and P.E. I have been a SAHM for awhile now, just over 3 years, and I am looking to return to the workforce in a few years. I would prefer to remain in the teaching field, but finding a Health Educator position in Ohio schools will be very difficult. I have heard that the market for Reading Specialsts is very demanding and I am interested to see if that is true. I would love to teach younger children and working part-time is also an option for me.

Any information is appreciated!! Thanks!

I suggest setting up an appointment (by phone, in person, via FB) with a Reading Specialist at a local school. If anyone would know the ins and outs in your local area, they would. They are extremely busy though, so try to be flexible with them on scheduling. Come to the appointment with your questions in hand.

I can't answer your question, but I did just want to suggest that when you begin looking for a position, don't forget to look at the Spring Garden Waldorf School in Copley. Right now (though I know you're not looking yet) they have several positions available, including a Tutor to help the children with their reading and math.

I got my reading endorsement 10 years ago. I took the Praxis & everything. The program wasn't too difficult to go through ~ I went with Notre Dame. The teaching field in Ohio is still difficult to get into, I have a bach. K-3, Reading Endors., & a Master's in Special Ed. & have a teaching job, but not in an ideal setting. The reading specialist at our school pulls kids out 1:1 or sometimes 2 at a time & does a special program with them. At other schools, they pull kids out in small groups (3 or 4) a few times a week to work with them. Good luck!
