my angel's so precious (2.5 yr old DS)...but bless his heart, he's so little! he doesn't notice anything yet, but he is small. at his 2 yr check up in december he weighed 24 lbs, we went last week b/c he's been sick 1x/month since december and his weight was still 24 lbs. the pedi didn't *say* she was concerned, but i got the feeling she thought he should weigh more. he's maybe 30 inches. not sure. anyway, like i said he's been sick literally 1x/month since decmeber (not yet in May, praying!!!) and appetite decreases when sick...think that could be why??
and re: him getting sick so much, the pedi doesn't know why so i'm giving nasonex & claritin daily to see if it's just allergies, per her orders
idk...his dad & me both are 5'6" and his dad's like 130 lbs, , so i know he's not gonna be a big ol' chunky football player, but i just thought that in 5-6 months he'd gain at least ONE pound, y'know?? he'll be 2 and a half on 6/1/11 and he wears 18 months clothes.
whatcha think??
thanks y'all! :)

What can I do next?

My youngest son will be 2.5 in June. I am 5'2", my husband is 5"8' and he is the BIGGEST in his family...my son only weighs MAYBE 24 lbs soaking wet and someone asked if he was about 16months the other day. he is a LITTLE BIT. i wouldn't worry too much. if he is developmentally fine, i'd say he is okay. Mine also wears 18month clothes and can actually wear some 9 month elastic shorts b/c his legs are sooo short. it's just how he's made!
i do give both my kids Juice Plus gummies and they really have not been significantly sick (outside of runny noses and coughing) in over a year...I swear by it. And i don't think my kid gained a single lb for almost 6 months and he EATS...so don't stress too much. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

My son didn't gain any weight from age 3 to age 4...well, maybe 1 lb. He was getting very active and grew taller, but not heavier. He's fine. I think as long as your son is at least growing upwards, it's ok. I also think if the ped. was worried, she would have told you. That's her job. She won't keep something like that from you & make you guess. You can always ask her flat out. You're right, based on mom & dad's size, your son's fate is pretty well determined already. Don't worry about him not gaining weight in a few months time. He may very well gain a couple pounds in the next couple months...and if he doesn't...as long as he's thriving & dr. isn't worried, he's okay.

My daughter is 23 lbs- and she'll be 2.5 in june. She is 34.5 inches tall... I would be pleased if she was at least 25lbs by the time she was 3. it took her months and months to get up from 22lbs.

But the pediatrician says that as long as she is eating, active, alert and is still growing (height wise) we don't need to worry. Some kids are just skinny! I was SO skinny and I remember being about 45 lbs at 7 or 8 years old... It wasn't until high school that I "filled out" to a more normal weight. I am not "big" but at 5'5" I am average in height and my healthy weight is about 125. I was almost never sick as a child... and I grew to be a healthy adult.

If your doctor thinks something is wrong, she'll probably have you start supplementing him with things like "pediasure" . My daughter is supposed to be encouraged to eat "fatty" and high calorie foods, but our doctor is not worried about her. If you are worried, I am sure your son wouldn't be hurt by putting an extra swipe of butter on his sandwiches, or an extra piece of bacon with his breakfast. Little changes in "little guys" can really make a huge difference!

Good Luck!~

My grandaughter was like that. Till she hit about 8, the she sprung up. Got to 110 pounds, a C cup, and 5'6" by the time she was 12. Up untill then, she was short and a rail. Still is a rail.
Don't worry, just help him get the vitamins he may need to build up his immune system

Can you look up what you and your husband weighed at that age? He could just take after you. Our friend's daughter was tiny for her size and the Dr. had her drink special high calorie shakes every day. It did nothing though - she is just a tiny petite person. We have other friends who are both short/small and their daughter is teeny but very healthy. She just takes after her parents. I think it is more accepted when it is a girl since boys are "supposed" to be big. He is at that age where he is very active and toddlers often pick at food or don't eat much, so I know it is common for toddlers to have a plateau in their weight gain. But if you are worried you can talk more to the Dr. about getting your son to take in more calories (like the shakes).

He's fine! My middle son is 3 (March 2008) and weighs 26lbs and is 35". My oldest will be 6 in July and is only 35lbs. I am petite (5' 2' & 100lbs) but my husband is normal (6' 1" & 200lbs). My son who is 3 put on 1lb in the last 6 months. Relax:) Everyone is different.

Neither of my girls weighed 20# at 2. My "baby" hit 35 at 3 and passed my then 6 yo. Still at 13 she weighs less than he at 10.

If he is eating well, and growing with each check up then I wouldn't be too concerned. Be thankful, 30#, wriggly two year olds are heavy.

You can look up the growth chart online for toddlers, but as long as he continues to grow and gain some weight i wouldn't worry. I have big ol' babies that seem to turn into rail thin kiddos. ex. my 5 month old is 16 pounds, but my daughter who was my biggest baby is now 8 and 53 pounds and 53 inches tall.

You may want to try taking him to someone that specializes in nutrition. They can test him for any deficiencies and they can also give him something to boost his immune system. My sister takes her child to Dr. Amber Brooks with Whole Child Wellness. They are located in Dallas but she is worth the drive. You can check out her website at www.mychildwellness.com. This doctor does a variety of things relating to nutrition such as diet changes, testing, and supplements. I'm sure you could find someone like her in your area.

DD only weighed 18 pounds when she turned 1 and at 2 barely weighed 24.. she turned 3 in Jan. , but she still wore 18 mon size clothes at 3, but then like over night she gained weight and now weighs 32 pounds and jumped up to a 2t-3t clothes. As long as your pedi is not overly concerned... But I would try to get him to drink pediasure, or like they suggest for preggo ladies to gain weight, add a milk shake with the carnation instant breakfast mixed in...
wishing you the best!

I have a great nephew like that. He's 5 and can still wear 3 or 4T pants.

I think what's important is the rate of even growth over time...look at his plot. As long as there's not a "stop" they're generally fine.

My middle son is little. At least he always was until age 4... now he's caught up some. He actually started giant (9 lbs 7 oz) so I assumed he'd be big like his brother, but by 3 months he was in the 10th percent for weight and that's were he stayed until age 4, when he made it up to 50th.

I can't remember what his weight was at age 2, but it was less than 30 lbs.

Our pediatrican always said to watch their growth curve. My son was growing, and staying about the same percent every checkup, so we didn't worry. Did your son get taller during that time? If he grew, he's probably fine.

I wouldn't be too concerned. My youngest is 2.5 and he weighs 28 lbs. He's pretty tall, but not overly and the other 2 year olds at his preschool are roughly the same size. I recently found his 15 month checkup report and he weighed 24 lbs then, so in over a year he's only gained 4 lbs. If he was dangerously low on the percentage scale, his doctor would say something.
