Window Replacement Showrooms?

We need to replace some windows in the house. My contractor doesn't know of any actual showrooms around that I could go there and take a look at how they work (some are made so cheap), I don't really want the white vinyl look inside. In a lot of the newer houses I've been in I have seen real wood on the interior. The contractor told me most places don't keep stuff like that on the floor anymore since it takes up so much room. I just find it hard to believe that you order something like out of a catalog without being able to see how it looks and what you're getting. Does anyone know of any place in MN or WI that has windows to see? I've checked Menards, Home Depot, Fleet Farm. Also for those of you that have replaced windows, what brand did you go with? I am hung up on Anderson and Pella so far. Any others that you would suggest?

What can I do next?

My dad and brother are in the window replacement business and sell vinyl windows. They have a small showroom in Minnetonka. I put in two of their windows two years ago and love them. I am looking to do more this summer. Send me a private email for their names and number since I don't know what the solicitation rules are for this website. I assume you know about the tax credit available for certain window replacements this year?

I believe Champion has a large showroom. They are in New Hope and I am not sure if they have more locations. Their commercials always talk about their large showroom.

HI Cheri

I used Allied in one home-- had a friend who was a distributor--think they might still be around in Roseville?? You'd have to internet search it though as my friend switched jobs.
I also used Eagle windows in a new construct. They are located in a showroom outside of Maple Grove on 94.

Good luck

Renewal by Andersen has a bunch of showrooms around the twin cities area. The largest one I believe is in Rosedale. Great windows of course and they have a ton of options for you to see.

Hi Cheri,
My in-laws put Marvin Windows in their home. They are wood and can be painted or stained. They work very nicely. I think they went through one of the smaller hardware stores---pretty sure it was Forslund's. The closest to you would be in Ashland I think. We're in the Ironwood, MI area.

Check out Scherer Bros. Lumberyard and Midwest Window Company. There are specific window companies, like Pella in Edina, that have a showroom of their products exclusively. That's strange that your contractor didn't give you any leads.
Goodluck.

I would suggest keeping an ear out for Home Shows in the area. These are usually in the spring, but can be through out the summer and fall. The manufacturers often have displays, especially at the larger shows.

We just got Anderson replacement windows for our sunroom this winter. We chose them over Pella because they were able to customize the windows to fit the irregular openings in our older home. (and less expensive!) I also was able to choose a stainable wood interior with snap in grills that match the other windows in my home. Very pleased with the windows appearance and function so far. We're in IA, so don't know about showrooms where you are, but here there is an independent Anderson dealer/installer and they have a showroom and showed us options and everything we were getting and how it worked before our order. Good luck!

We replaced all of our windows last fall after my husband spent the entire summer doing extensive research and getting about 6 quotes where sales people came into our home (very annoying people). We did go to Home Depot and another place that I think was called the Roof Depot (siding, roofing, and windows) in minneapolis. But mostly he did research on the internet and read postings where people discussed different windows.

We ended up going with vinyl windows because of cost and less maintenance. After debating between inserts and full replacement we went with full replacement windows which is sometimes called "New Construction". The brand we choose was Milgard because of its excellent warranty and the look of the window. Although our windows are vinyl they have a woodgrain look. The warranty is lifetime and not only includes replacement parts but also labor. I don't know of any other company that provides that kind of warranty plus labor. The warranty is transferable to the next owner if you sell the house within 10 years.

Just as important as the choice of the window is the installer. It doesn't matter what window you buy, if it is installed wrong you will have problems.

We did not see our exact window in a showroom before purchasing but saw the basic window the guy brought into our house. We selected the wood grain from color chips the sales guy had.

The company that installs Milgard windows in this area is called Sealgard. They did a great job of installing and also doing some exterior vinyl replacement on the trim. The lead installer makes the wood sash himself in his workshop and it is absolutely beautiful. We did have some issues with them in a delay and mixup of the order a couple of times which was pretty annoying but in the end the quality of the work made up for it.

If you have any questions, you can email me. There is a lot to learn and a lot of options when it comes to windows. I think it was more difficult then buying a car! Goodluck in whatever you end up buying.

Cheri - after having wood-frame windows in my home for 20 years, I'm really anxious to change over to vinyl. Wood takes lots of work and repair. We have moisture that builds up on our windows during the winter and I've had to sand them down and restain/revarnish several times. I gave up trying to keep up with them so I am in the process of changing over to vinyl.

If I knew the brand name of my current wood-frame windows, I would highly recommend you stay away from them. I would definitely stay with the Anderson or Pella - never heard anyone say anything bad about them.

Good luck,

I would suggest going on line and looking up window manufacturers, such as Andersen Windows. Once you contact them, you should be able to find a place that has samples to look at. Just be very careful who you get. We needed new windows and a young, just starting out on his own window installer gave us a fantastic price, but then fell off a roof before doing ours and it was a good 7-8 months before they were done, but still sitting on our deck and then he hired some roofers to do them. Needless to say, we found out he had mismeasured and the roofers tried, but it is not a good job. In fact, the big picture window started cracking during this winter. Isn't that sweet, and I have no idea how to get this corrected. Good luck and hopefully, good hunting.

We had several windows replaced about 2 years ago and went with Marvin. We know several people that went with Renewal by Anderson and have problems so we didn't want to go that way. Ours are white vinyl but we were given the choice for wood appearance. We went with white because all the remaining windows are white. We really like them and have had no problems with them. My favorite part is the easy clean feature. They unhook and tip in, a lot of brands do that now.

Good luck!

My husband works at Pella Windows Headquarters in Pella. As for your location, there is one in St. Cloud (you can also go to Lowe's-they have a few different brands and the salesmen that are there are usually pretty informed). Pella also has retail stores in Wisconsin: Appleton, Green Bay, Madison, and Brookfield.
We had Anderson windows in our home when we bought it, several leaked (not sure how old they were) we went to Pella windows with the replacement ones that look like wood but are vinal - have had no issues with them in the last 4 years and love them! (I may be partial due to Pella pays my husband so I can be a SAHM =Þ lol)
Hope this helps!
