My baby who is 28 months is very congested and of course doctors were closed this weekend so my husband went to a pharmacy asked them what we could do for our baby girl and they told him a childrens type mucinex. Well we are not giving her the full dose of course since she is only 2 1/2. The big problem I am having right now is she keeps saying her back hurts her. Can this be more than her allergies making her congested. She did complain about her back before we started giving her the medicine. Anyway does anyone know if we did the right thing with giving her what the pharmacy said and should I take her to urgent care or childrens before I call doctor tomorrow. Please help.... (My husband thinks she might be saying her back hurts because she is trying to get out of things.... ( I have back problems and I am hoping that she is just hearing me tell my husband each day how it hurts. he wants to know everyday how much it hurts me. )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So my husband took my girls to the doctors yesterday and he said that my oldest has a slight sinus infection and that they both just have bad allergies right now to keep them on Zrytec until December. Now the doctor asked my husband if they were complaining if anything hurt and all he said was yes and the doctor did not say anything more. So still have no clue why my youngest complains about her back but my husband really thinks it is because of me and when I was going to the chiropractor. So will just have to keep an eye on her. Thanks for all your suggestions and comments.

Children under the age of 5 should never have any over the counter cold or cough medicine of any kind!

You really aren't suppose to give children under the age of six any type of decongestant or cold medicine. You don't know what the correct dosage is since it's not printed on the label. I can't believe a pharmacist would tell you to give her medicine that's not age appropriate! If you think it's allergies, I would have her tested and get something prescribed. I know you're just doing what the pharmacist said.

I would but her in a warm bath and let her sit for awhile. That may help to loosen up some of the mucus. You can also use the bulb syringe to help remove some of the mucus. Vicks rub on her chest will help too. Unfortunately there's not much else you can do at this age. My 2 1/2 year old is really suffering right now too. :( Poor things! I feel so bad for them when they're sick.

Hi T.,
Anytime the doctors office is closed, go to the ER. It's just not worth the risk with little ones.

The back hurting could be a sign of pneumonia. Little ones are pron to this because their little bodies are always developing. My (now 15) was very pron to pneumonia.

Do keep us posted. Prayers ~

T., It may be what she is hearing...it may be one of a thousand things ie..growing pains or just a simple twist of her back. My suggestion to you is to get her on some good supplementation. It is very important to be ahead of the dreadful things that are going around. It would seem to me to keep her immune system in check. I'm sure I can help. ____@____.com

T.,
I would just call your pediatrician's office and talk to them. Does the packaging for the Mucinex say anything about back pain being a side effect?
Next time, still call the physician's office. They are ALWAYS on-call for emergent situations - including a cough and a recommendation for something. Pharmacists are very knowledgeable, so you didn't necessarily do a bad thing. However, the pediatrician is always the best bet.
Hope she's better.

Hi. I'm not trying to alarm you, but you may want to have your daughter checked out. There are several things, including pneumonia, that could cause congestion and also cause her back to hurt. Hopefully it's nothing, but since it doesn't sound like she's doing better yet, I'd probably try to get her in to see a doctor. Hope she's better soon!

As a parent, I would consider whether she is coughing a lot. If she is coughing a lot, this could cause her back (and stomach muscles) to hurt a bit. I usually keep checking symptoms like whether she has a fever. I would monitor that, and continue to treat until you can get a doctor on the phone during regular business hours. If the fever gets high or unmanageable, I would use the urgent care option. Keep in mind, though, as her mother, you have an innate sense of what she needs. Pay attention to your inner voice, and if you feel that she needs urgent care, then do that.

If you spoke to the pharmacist I would say the medication was okay.Mucinex is a very powerful decongestant and has pretty much nothing else in it.It is 2 to 3 times stronger than the normal dosage that use to be prefered.
It is possible she is mimicing you by say her back hurts, how ever if she seems congested in her chest , her lungs could be congested and you might want to get a chest xray. But she most likely would be wheezing and coughing if this was going on.

Hi, T.! At 28 months old, I would listen to her if she has never had any back issues before. Could she possibly have pneumonia? That can certainly radiate pain to your back. I would certainly make an appointment sooner than later. Maybe the doctor will give her a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia. Maybe she has a kidney infection or something like that. It could cause back pain as well. Those are both things that you want to get an antibiotic for sooner than later. I would call the doctor right away if you haven't already. I wish you luck and a speedy recovery!

Well, I would definately take her to a physician to be seen just in case there is something else going on. It is possible that she is just repeating what you say about your back b/c my son is known for that.
If you are interested in working from home so you are able to spend more time with them, give me a call and I can share with you what I do.
Talk to you soon,

If the drs office is closed I always refer to the pharmacist, so in my opinion, you did the right thing. As far as saying her back hurts, it could be a variety of things... If she is coughing it could be that, it could be pneumonia. If you are able to try to listen to her back and se if you can hear any noise, junky noise when she breathes in. That is how I know my son has pneumonia. Granted I AM NOT a dr, but my son is severely disabled and I always listen to his back. However, my son has always had a fever with pneumonia. Idk if everyone does but again, i AM NOT a dr.
Good Luck

Hi T.,

I think if I were you I would rather be safe than sorry and take her to the doctor. I think you can definitely trust the pharmacist but the whole back hurting thing needs to be checked. I can tell you that sometimes you can have back pain when congestion gets bad and it is turing into pneumonia. I am not trying to scare you but I as a child had pneumonia 4 times in one year and my mother told me that I would always compain about my back. I would take her in!

On another topic I was reading your " a little about me" and I wanted to ask you if you had ever thought about working from home. It just breaks my heart when I hear about moms missing being at home with their little ones. I work from home and love being home with my little girl. I would be happy to share what I do with you if you are interested. If not no big deal : ) I just know how hard it is to be away from your babies! You can visit my website to request more info.

Well good luck and I hope that your little girl is feeling better soon!

Hope you daughter is feeling better!!! Not long ago our daughter (2 1/2) started saying she had a headache all the time and then I realized how much I was saying it. I stopped saying it and so did she. Hopefully that is that case for you too. As for the congestion, we have been just running a vaporizer and using vicks vapor rub on our daughter's chest. You could try an antihistamine like Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin. I think the doses are on those bottles for 2 years and up. Good luck!!! I know how stressful even a little cold can be!!!

Hi T., the very best meds for your conjested 2 1/2 daughter is go to the store and buy a small jar of Vicks Vapo Rub I can almost guarentee that if you put this on the bottoms of each foot and put a pair of her socks on her feet in two days and maybe even sooner her conjestion will be better or gone. I kept telling our kids about this for their little one same age as yours but they never done it so my hubby bought the Vicks and that night we were sitting with the girls so I made a game and told the little one if she would put Vicks on my feet I would put some on hers and we would put socks on and we would feel much better in the morning. IT WORKED. Make sure she doesn't get any in her eyes as it will burn but I bet it will work for you. As for her back I would think she just hears you and came up with her back hurting like mamas but it wouldn't hurt to have her checked out. Good Luck K. P

I would definitely get her checked out ASAP, sounds as though she has something more than allergies. If my son was coughing and telling me his back hurts my first thought would be pneumonia, I hope everything is ok.

If she says her back hurts and she's talking about her mid-thoracic back just beneath her shoulder blades, it could be her lungs that are making her back hurt. Stop and think about it...a doc asks you to breathe.....where does he put the stethescope?

EUCALYPTUS OIL......this can be used in a humidifier, put in water and let the steam from the heated water go thru the house, drops on the pillow, so she can breathe it while she sleeps, or even a little on the end of her nose.

I breathe it directly from the bottle and so does Abbie, who's 7. She always says, "THIS HELPS ME BREATHE BETTER." or "THIS MAKES MY NOSE FEEL BETTER." I've been using this since she was very small. It REALLY does help. Eucalyptus is something that is in Vicks.
