oh yes. Morning sickness can really be all day sickness. I don't know who named it only 'morning sickness'. It should get better as the months progress. At week 17 I finally cleared from the constant nausea. Good luck to you. If it gets really bad the dr. can give you some medication. Just think- it will only last a short time in the whole scheme of things.

Something you can try before you take any kind of medication is peppermints. I had nausea with my second child and I just kept peppermints around and that alway made my stomach feel better. It sounds silly but really does work. Just an idea, hope it helps.

My doctor gave me Phenergan and the only side effect is it makes most people sleepy. I just happen to have the kind of job that you can't just run to the toilet every time you feel like you're going to puke, so I asked for something from the very beginning.
I am now five months and haven't been nauseated for over five weeks, so I'm no longer taking it.

I suffered with Hyperemesis gravidarum...morning sickness gone BAD!!!

Here is the website for those who suffer with it and ways to help.

http://www.hyperemesis.org/

With me I was on a lot of medications to help with with it.

Here are some things that helped me some:

* Eat small meals
* Dont eat anything that will hurt coming back up.
* Stay away from lettuce and steak...lettuce takes a long time to digest and will come right back up. Steak will be heavy and come back up.
* Stay away from acidic foods and drinks (Orange juice, red sauces)
* BRAT Diet (Banana, Rice, Apple sauce and Dry Toast)
* Chew gum or suck on a lolly pop, pepperment
* I hear sucking on a lemmon helps
* I hear ginger also helps.
* Stay away from strong smells
* Stay away from fast movement (motions sickness)
* Drink sprite/7 Up
* Saltine crackers

I hope I helped.

Dear M.,
According to some of the health articles I've read, the nausea is nature's way of getting you to eat very bland food, which is a way of protecting your baby from anything harmful. Keep a good supply of saltine crackers on hand, eat small amounts often, avoid fried and spicy foods. Sprite or 7-Up may also help.
Best wishes for a healthy, beautiful baby.

Yes, this is commom. You can get a prescription from your OB for phenergan or zofran to get you by until about 12 weeks into your pregnancy when your nausea will disappear as mysteriously as it arrived.

I'm sorry, M....but I do feel your pain! It is totally normal. I was shocked when I found out "morning sickness" didn't just go away in the afternoon. It can be really rough. I got really down this time around, as I had it for several weeks, and I had a very hard time taking care of my toddler. I'm not trying to scare you, just want you to know that is normal. Usually it subsides a little around the 10th week of pregnancy, and for most women it goes away around 14 weeks. If you are actaully vomitting a lot, you should tell your doctor. He'll want you to drink lots of fluids and REST. My advice is to eat whatever you think you can eat, and don't even try anything that sounds yucky. Take your vitamins, adn don't worry if you can only eat one or two things. You'll be OK. I swear I could only tolerate peaches and bread for about a month! You WILL feel more better eventually, so try to focus on the positive. I will say that many sources say that morning sickness is actually a very good sign--it means all of your hormones are working as they should, and your chance of miscarriage is much lower than if you had none. Good luck to you, and hang in there.

I had nine months of "morning sickness' that lasted all day with each of my children. There is no magical answer that works for all women (salteen's and peppermint tea did nothing for me). Keep your diet simple, pay attention to your body's reation to food. Stay away from fried foods and artifical colors and flavors. Try to never let yourself get really hungry or real full. And stay hydrated.

Yes, being nauseous all day can be perfectly normal. I experienced very bad "morning" sickness with my first two children. This is what I've learned: don't drink really cold water as that will upset your stomach more. Try for carbonated water at room temperature because the bubbles can help settle your stomach. Try anything with ginger, which is a natural alternative for upset stomachs -- so ginger tea, ginger snaps, etc. Crackers w/o salt is also OK. Also, you may want to try nibbling on a couple of cracker before getting out of bed, because it settles the stomach acids which naturally start churning when you get up in the morning. And if there is any food that sets off your nausea, try to avoid it at all costs! I couldnt' stand coffee or the smell of it (even though I was, and continue to be, a coffee drinker!) and my husband brewed coffee every morning and I can't tell you how many times I threw up just from the smell!

This is the advice I got from a former midwife, and it worked. Well, the nausea didn't totally go away, but at least I stopped throwing up!
Simply eat VERY small amounts of CARBS + PROTEIN every couple hours. When I say small I mean, a string cheese (protein) + toast. A few whole wheat saltines + peanut butter, etc. I swear NOTHING WORKED until I tried the magic carb + protein combo.
My nausea was debilitating. I wouldn't drive for fear of motion sickness. It was bad enough riding in a car & having to pull over, but it's so much worse when you are drving and nausea strikes. I lost 15 pounds in the first 2 months.
Anyway, good luck! With any luck it will pass once the second trimester hits, which is what happened with me.

Sorry to say but oh yea it is definitely normal! They call it morning sickness.. Why "morning" I am not sure, I had an upset stomach all day and night every day for the first 3 months!!! Eventually I had to make a special appointment to the Dr. about it. He prescribed something (I can't remember what now) but after that I was all better! Before I finally broke down and saw the Dr. about it I drank a lot of ginger ale (the ginger helps your stomach) ate papaya pills by the bottle (you can get them at any health food store and you can have as many as you want) Chamomile tea is also great! They have these suckers or lollipops at the maternity store for morning sickness... DO NOT buy them they are such a waste of money and are very expensive!!! I think I paid $6 or $7 for about 10 tiny suckers... that didn't even work!! So... Ginger, Chamomile and papaya should help tremendously! Oh yea and if it's really bad first thing in the morning keep some crackers by your bed and eat them BEFORE you even get up out of bed! Good luck you poor thing! It will pass I promise.

Bless your heart! First of all congratulations. My best friend had horrible nausea with her pregnancy and her doctor recommended ginger...? She had ginger pills, ginger altoids, ginger tea and she also took small doses of B6 throughout the day. You can look it up on the internet for more info, but this worked for her. She would go to Market Street and Whole Foods-they have ginger section.

Hang in there! You may find relief soon...
What worked for me those first 12 weeks was to eat continuously, small portions of course. As long as I had food handy and didn't let myself go too long without some, I was better. Still not 100%, but definitely not so green feeling. I loved gingersnaps and gingerale and bagels. I also thought the preggie pops mentioned in another response worked well.

If it makes you feel any better it's actually a good sign that your body is producing plenty of the hormones that support pregnancy.

23 years ago, when pregnant with my first, I read a very good book, "LET'S HAVE HEALTHY CHILDREN" by ADELLE DAVIS. I followed her advice on what kind of vitamins to take for nausea and swelling of fingers and ankles and it worked!! But now I can't remember exactly which Vitamin went with what symptom. I remember taking natural Vit. E and A, all the B's, C, folic acid, etc.

You should read the book for yourself!! It is probably out-of-print, but it may be in the library!! good luck

Preggie pops...they are magical. They are lollipops, or you can get them in hard candy form (no stick). You can purchase them at Babies R Us or Mother hood maternity, or online at preggiepops.com. Another thing I did was I kept gum with sugar in it like bubblicious, and when I would get an upset stomache, I owuld chew on a piece. Sometimes you get nausios when your blood sugar drops. Best of luck!

I would keep a journal of what all you eat, and stay away from foods that make you sick. I had morning sickness until I was about 5 1/2 months pregnant. lol

Yes, it is completely normal...unfortunately! I was nauseated all day as well (no vomiting thankfully) for the first 3-4 months. I tried a lot of things, here's the ones I lived on during that time:

-goldfish crackers
-gatorade- grape was the flavor of choice
-mac & cheese
-grilled cheese
-pizza- only sometimes and it had to be from papa john's

So, needless to say I didn't manage to eat too much during that time. Eat small meals several times (instead of 3 big meals) when you feel like it and get as much rest as possilbe. Definitely mention to your dr. at the next visit. Good luck and hope you start feeling better soon!

I had morning sicness with all three of my kids for the first 16 weeks. I used the Sea Bands on my wrists. They are made for motion sickness, but I thought they helped with morning sickness.
I was also going to suggest Preggie Drops which are pieces of individually wrapped candy. The drops are easier to carry in your purse or pocket, and you can suck on them without having a stick coming out of your mouth. I had those in my mouth constantly, and I think they really helped.

The only thing I can suggest is to nibble a few saltines and sip a carbonated non-caffeine drink before getting out of bed in the mornings....until the period of morning sickness passes. This is not at all unusual. I think it's caused by the hormonal changes. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. It's different with every pregnancy. Some just have it in the mornings, some have it in the evenings and some have it all day long. The baking soda in the crackers is soothing to the stomach for some people. Get as much rest as possible. Eat several small snacks through the day instead of big meals.

My babies are 36 and 39 years old now; so there may be more sophisticated ways to deal with this now....but it worked for me and others I've known over the years. Talk to your ob/gyn on your next visit.

perfectly normal unfortunately. just be glad you're not puking all day every day :) if you begin vomiting, your dr will probably put you on zofran or phenergan, but it's probably just one of those things that you'll have to wait for it to pass. try gatorade, ginger ale, or whatever it is that works for you. good luck!

I feel so sorry for you! My mom said when she was pregnant with my brother and I the only thing that got her through it was phenergan and now they don't give it out anymore. I'm nauseated alot just from reflux and meds and so I try, peppermints, peppermint tea, ginger like what you'd put in a cake, just put some on your finger, it does work. They also have ginger tea, try zantac if you can, sucking on ice, crackers, toast. YOu're definitely not alone!

I really feel for you. With my first pregnancy, I was sick all day every day and it seemed to last forever. Here are all the things I tried and maybe one or some will work for you: Sea Bands (cloth bands you wear on your wrists where your pressure points are), ginger (ginger ale, plain ginger, anything), saltines (eating anything before my feet hit the floor in the mornings), sodas, not letting myself get hungry - eating every couple of hours, Emetrol (nausea medicine my nurse recommended)...In the end, my doctor had to prescribe medicine for me to take daily which was the cure for me. It made me sleepy, but I gladly took that over throwing up all day every day. I hope your upset stomach subsides quickly. Believe it or not, it won't last forever although it feels like it will.

My 1st dtr was the most beautiful pregnancy ever! If all of them could be like that I would have tons. My 2nd dtr was a miserable pregnancy. All the "bad" you hear about pregnancy happened to me. Every smell and every thought of something remotely "eewwwy" made me sick. I stay nauseated 24/7.

Triscuts helped me. Applesauce and Bananas and toast will also help. They say you can eat saltines but during pregnancy you don't want to stack up on the salt intake.

It is normal. Your body is going thru a lot of changes right now and thinks you have an "invader." Give it time. Hopefully you will get lucky and it will go away as time goes by.
Good luck.

With my first pregnancy, I had extreme nausea 24 hours a day every day for the entire 9 months. I tried every remedy known to man (basically every thing that the other moms have listed) and the only thing that worked was Zofran. It was expensive for me ($75 for 10 pills WITH good insurance), but fortunately now, they have a generic version.

For my second pregnancy, my nausea lasted the typical first 3 months, and it was mild, I still took the generic Zofran called Ondansetron, and it was about $5 for 20 pills.
