TV Question - Just for Fun

I saw the post on here about the show Phineas and Ferb and read the responses. It got me wondering what do you allow your kids to watch and what is off-limits? And are their any shows or characters that you just can't stand?

Just for the record, my daughter is 3. She loves Dora and Diego, I am not a big fan (the repetition gets to me) but I can tolerate it. She also loves Backyardigans, Wonder Pets, Micky Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, Seseme Street, Clifford and Curious George. I hate Barney, Teletubbies and Sponge Bob. Fortunately Barney and Teletubbies don't seem to be on very much so she's never seen them. And Sponge Bob is on the regular Nick channel, not Nick Jr. which she normally watches, so I still have control over that. Hanna Montana, Suite Life and all others like them are completely verboten - sometimes they are on and my husband doesn't realize it because he's not really paying attention and I have to go over and switch them off. But she isn't really paying attention anyway - she usually just plays with her toys and only really watches when she's really tired.

My stepsons are now 16 and 17 but when they were younger, one of our favorites for the whole family was MythBusters. It's funny and entertaining, and there are some science lessons in there as well. They both really like Family Guy and I can't understand why I can't stand it. Um, maybe because I am not a teenage boy? :)

So What Happened?

P.S. To Kim from Utica - my daughter is 3, she has no business watching Hannah Montana or any of those other tweenager type shows. As for my stepsons watching Family Guy - they live at their mom's, not with us. Whatever their mom says, goes. At our house, they may watch it late at night, I'm not crazy about it but at least it's when my daughter is asleep in bed.

Thanks for posting this - it's fun to read the responses. I, like you, despise Barney and Spongebob. My child is not allowed to watch him at all, I can't stand the language. Caillou is BEYOND annoying and luckily we no longer have Sprout. I agree 100% with you about Dora and Diego, annoying but tolerable. My son is 4-1/2 now and I have another one coming, so I have, at least, 4 more years of Dora/Diego to go! :(

Wow alot of responses. But its a good question. I have a 4 month old and he doesn't watch tv but he likes to hear some of the nick jr shows. my 2 new favorites are Toot & Puddle and Olivia but he responds good to Max & Ruby and Dora. I don't stick him in front of the tv its more for the sounds. I usually just keep it on nick jr. My daughter (who is now 14) grew up with little bear and franklin and a few others they dont show on tv now.

My daughter just turned 2 and she watches more than the average 2 year old watches BUT she watches shows that, I find, she learns things from. Her all time fav is Yo Gabba Gabba on Nick Jr. They have songs about biting, sharing, eating your food (...party in my tummy...), bath time, birthdays, teeth, etc.. Needless to say some of those topics help us out when we have to teach/guide/ or reprimand her at times. I actually hear her playing from the other room right now saying "No hitting Toodee, its not nice". : p

She also like Dora and Olivia, which I dont know that she learns much from. When she isnt watching Gabba, we are big PBS fans-Sesame Street, Dinosaur Train, Super Why and Clifford.

I know that tv time is not good for kids, especially younger ones but the way I look at it is-I have to get things done around the house, we grew up watching tv and we turned out fine, and there are worse things that could effect your child aside from tv.

Thanks for your fun question!!

Our 4yo loves, Wow Wow Wubbzy, Max and Ruby, Kai Lan, Mickey Mouse, Handy Manny, Berenstein Bears, Cat in the Hat, & Dora. He also like to watch John Wayne movies with daddy (that's when I split, lol!) and his favorite show to watch with daddy is Holmes on Homes. It's so funny to see a 4 yo (he just turned 4 too.) say "daddy, I want to watch Holmes on Homes"!

My husband and I hated Barney so much, the song was super annoying and we always said that we hoped he was dead before we had kids. Well, he was still very alive AND he happened to be our sons very favorite show, lol! Once we actually watched some episodes, we found out that even though he is very annoying, he is also very polite AND teaches kids manners. We now like Barney.

Yo Gabba Gabba (or whatever it's called) is off limits in our house. I'm sorry, but grown men shouldn't be dressed up like that and acting like that! It's VERY weird!

Our son loves Caillou. We can't stand him, he's so whiny!! Sometimes we have to stop letting him watch it, because he starts acting like him, lol.

Yo Gabba Gabba R-O-C-K-S!!!!!!! They have had Jack Black on, Weird Al....DJ Lance is the bomb!!!! I feel sorry for kids whose parents dont allow it....its an awsome singing and dancing show.
My husband walked through the living room one day and saw DJ Lance and exclaimed, "who's that?!? Is that Roger from What's Happenin'!?!" Funny stuff....

Childrens entertainment is just that...CHILDRENS entertainment...not aimed towards adults.

For some weird reason, my 3 year old likes Fresh Beat Band....I would think that is aimed toward an older crowd...maybe 10,11? Yet again, I think she just likes the singing and dancing.

Other than that for entertainment purposes (times they don't necessarily have to learn something) we do DVD of Disney sing alongs or Walt Disney cartoons or something like that.. Cartoon Network for the most part seems to be quite inappropriate for younger children.. I don't watch it an jump over that channel when we flip through cause I don't want my daughter to see that it's a cartoon.

We don't watch TV much and my 3yo son hasn't seen any cartoons mentioned here. He has a Veggie Tales DVD, Thomas DVDs, and I have rented a couple DVDs from the library.

Right now my 4 year old is into Wow wow wubzy and really likes The Fresh Beat Band. I pretty much only let her watch Nick Jr. (was Noggin) or PBS. Sometimes Disney for Mickey Mouse Club House. She also loves the show HI-5, lots of singing and pretending. She isn't allowed Spongebob or the older Disney shows like Hannah Montana. We went through years of Dora and I am so glad that is over, lol....During the week she gets a half hour a day of cartoons and she always waits til Fresh Beat Band is on so she can watch that.

I have always despised Calliou....that kid is so whiny and talks in a wittle baby voice! He needs a good time out IMHO. Oh and my hubby and I love Mythbusters, we watch it all the time! We also watch deadliest catch and my daughter was glued to that for some reason----she even started pretending with her doll she was a crab ship captain, lol.....

I'm surprised no one mentioned Special Agent OSO. It's geared for preschoolers and shows a child having some kind of problem and how OSO can help them solve the problem or learn to do daily things in 3 special steps. It's on Disney and I may be biased, but my son-in-law is the Associate Producer. Sean Astin is the voice of OSO. Toys are just now being sold at Target and ToysRUs.

My 5 Y.O. grandchildren were advised when they were in their Montessori preschool not to watch SpongeBob because of his language - saying Stupid, etc. The teachers wouldn't even let them use the word butt - they had to say bottom. They do love SpongeBob, though! I buy them the WordWorld DVD's also, and it has helped them know sight words. They love Phinneas and Ferb.

I like some of the shows that come on pbs because they are usually educational and safe for your child to watch. I do not like caillou however because he likes to throw tantrums sometimes and he gets what he wants so my daughter thinks that she can act the same way and get what she wants so it is off limits now. She loves a show called signing time which teaches sign language. She asks to watch it all of the time and she is picking up some of the signs from it.

I try to limit any tv watching to either just a few times per week or no more than an hour a day. However, there are those times when I'm sick or crazy-busy and it's a "cartoon day"! I have a 4 year old and a 23m old. The youngest isn't really into tv yet at all, so that's good. He'll watch Thomas or Curious George a little bit. The oldest watches(but not every day or even every week -it depends when he's going to get to watch and what's airing at the time) Dora and Diego, Scooby Doo (my personal favorite since I was a child, but only the real ones from the 60s and 70s!) -most CN shows from our childhoods like Yogi Bear and The Jetsons and Flintstones. He loves Phineas and Ferb and he's REALLY gotten into Batman, Spiderman and Iron Man. It depends on which version of these is on as to whether he's allowed to watch it. Some are Y7 and they really are for older kids. I prefer to get the DVDs of the original series from the 60s and 70s for him to watch. We're BIG Looney Tunes fans! Tom and Jerry are huge here too and so is Popeye. I love the classics! We also enjoy Max and Ruby and the oldest still likes Curious George. I had a moment of sheer delight and complete bittersweetness last Saturday night. My oldest and I watched E.T. and he cried when E.T. dies and then when he and Eliot say goodbye to one another. They were silent tears like you and I cry whenever we watch a sad movie, and it's the first time he's ever cried at a movie or story! It was so touching!

I don't let them watch the older kid Disney and Nick shows like "iCarly" and anything with Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus makes me shudder all over, plus they're WAY too young to watch any of that! I'm not a huge fan of the anime stuff and think much of it is too old for them right now. I cannot STAND whiny whiny Caillou! That show is not watched here. Once in a blue moon he'll see it, but he usually wants to change the channel. We also watch a lot of nature programs and the oldest and I are REALLY into sharks and shark week! It can get a bit gorey, but we've never hidden the fact that many animals eat other animals and that we eat certain animals from our kids -they know where their hamburgers come from and while we may all turn our head when the great whites snap a seal in half -well, that's just part of it!

My kids are 7 and 3. The 3 year old watches a lot more of the "older" kid shows that my first child did simply because the 7 year old gets tired of seeing Yo Gabba Gabba. They both love Tom and Jerry and the Pink Panther. We watch SpongeBob, and I actually enjoy it, too. They use a lot of tongue in cheek humor. However, there are sometimes that I cringe a little bit at something they do. I had banned pretty much all of the CN shows - Chowder, Adventure Time, etc, and Phineas and Ferb along with it. However, my daughter was watching P&F at her grandmother's house and wanted to watch it at home. I watched a couple of episodes with her, and it is actually pretty clever. It is almost like a Seinfeld for kids - there are two or three plot lines that go along, and they neatly resolve each other at the end of the show. So, that one is no longer banned. But for some reason, my three year old is afraid of it. My three year old enjoys Wow Wow Wubbzy and Kipper right now.

We don't have cable anymore so we are pretty much limited to Sesame Street or other PBS shows. I think Super Why is entertaining by my daughter is only 19 months old so it's obviously over her head. She really doesn't watch TV at all during the day. We have netflix streamed to our tv so she gets to watch one Dora a night. She will do anything Dora tells her to do it is adorable! We also have the CD in the car so she already knows the songs and the movements to them.

I can not stand the Wiggles, WonderPets, SpongeBob, I'm sure there are more but that is all I can think of right now. Those will be shows she won't ever see if I can help it.

My boys are (almost) 7 and 5 and they like Star Wars Clone Wars and Scooby Doo and Tom and Jerry and P&F. My boys LOVE to watch Bear Grills in Man Vs. Wild and any Army Shows on the History Channel with Dad!

My daughter is 2.5 and her favorite shows right this minute are The Bernstein Bears and Wow Wow Wubzy and Little Bear...her brothers occasionally break down and watch Max and Ruby with her because they are jealous and think Max has the coolest toys EVER!

I really haven't been big on banning a lot of shows but some are too outrageous and just are not allowed...like Adventure Time, Chowder and Billy and Mandy is WAY banned...that show is terrible!

~I hear what everyone is saying about Yo Gabba Gabba...I thought it was creepy the first couple times I saw it too and it was on the banned list for awhile...but in all honesty I LOVE the songs on there! I have been known to watch it myself, if its on while I am flipping around, and all my teenagers make fun of me for it...my hubby says they just rip off other popular music and add new lyrics...maybe that's why I like them so much because I recognize them from somewhere?

Their language and grammar skills are also much higher than their friends in class. Invest time in your library rather than your TV and you will reap huge rewards later..

I was one of the Mom's who thought her children would NEVER watch any TV at all. Well. Real life is very different from planned life! My children are 2 1/2 and 3 1/2, so they don't watch a ton of TV but it's great when I need to shower or clean the bathroom, etc. We have a couple of movies that are our favorites, "Ponyo" and "My Neighbor Totoro". They are great movies. We also watch Calliou (I wouldn't watch this by myself, but they enjoy it and it's at least a really simple and "clean" show) and Kipper off of PBS. Netflix has a movie that is visually striking and beautiful but pretty intense, "Peter and the Wolf" of 2006. They also enjoy the old Sesame Street and the really old Winnie the Pooh as well as an occasional Muppet movie.

After the kids are in bed we do watch Family Guy! But, I kind of have the sense of humor of a teenage boy ;).

My son 5 yrs old likes P & F, Ni hao Kai lan, Thomas, Bob, wonder pets, mickey mouse club house, and those classic Disney cartoons like the one of donald fixing the clock or making pancakes and glue falls into the batter.

They both watch pretty much the same things.

He has always been that way...now his baby brother I can already tell might have some couch potato tendencies!! I haven't read the Phineas and Pherb post, but I personally think that show is so funny and my son likes it too, it is one of the few that don't drive me nuts! Most of the shows on Cartoon Network are off limits for my kids. They are not allowed to watch Chowder, some show with a pirate (name has to do with a pancake or something), in the past Ed, Edd and Eddy were off limits. Now there is going to be a show on Disney with some fish. My kids like the usualy tween shows-Suite Life, Hannah, Wizards. They also love Scooby-doo. My 2 yr old loves Sponge Bob but I limit how much she gets to watch. She doesn't care for Barney, usually gives up watching Netflix instant play after about 10 minutes. I love it when Tom and Jerry is on, they love them. We have dvds of Looney Toons which they do like also.

Honestly though, I think they are really dumbing down these kids shows a lot now. When I see that, I do not let them watch.

For other stuff that most people would not think about with kids, my kids love watching the Discovery and Discovery Kids channels, and my son likes the History channel.

My kids don't watch TV. Not because all the shows are trash - though 99.9% of them are, but because it is a waste of time and the commercials teach them to beg for things they don't need. Also they start wanting to see what's on at other times of the day and its just an issue.

The one thing we enjoy watching as a family is reruns of the Andy Griffith Show on the TVLand website. Its free and very limited in commercials.

My husband loves shows like Mythbusters and I like cooking and decorating type shows, but often though the main content is fine, the language and jokes are not G rated. I don't care if they bleep out the F word, their are lots they don't, and the kid's like, what are they saying. It normalizes swearing and I'm just not okay with that.

answers from Houston on

It depends on the age of the child... I actually like Phineas and Ferb and it's quite tame compared to a lot of other cartoons out there. A lot of the older Disney shows like Hannah Montanta and I-Carly and Suite Life are off limits, b/c they are just to annoying and catty and I think the characters are pretty bad examples. Adventure Time and that gross Chowder show are pretty bad for kids (though I like Adventure Time b/c it's hilarious).

I prefer sticking to the pbs channel, or the more educational cartoons, like some Rebecca suggested.

I've tried banning Scooby Doo b/c it used to give them nightmares, but the grandparents got the kids hooked and they absolutely love them now. I think it's interesting that so many moms dislike Calliou... I love that show!

I know some parents don't like Spongebob, but Spongebob's character is actually really good because he won't tell a lie and he won't be late to work, etc. I also let the 3 older kids watch shows like Hannah Montana, Suite Life, Wizards, and i-Carly. I didn't agree with Wizards at first but after watching it I was fine with it. I don't see anything wrong with those tween movies because there isn't anything in those that some of the cartoons don't portray through their characters too. Of course I limit how much they watch of anything though!
