Trying New Formula for a Gassy Baby

My 10.5 month old baby has terrible gas pains in the middle of the night. She will wake up a few times crying in pain. I know it is gas because I hear her toots (and smell them). Plus, she will fall back to sleep after she passes the gas.
I have never given her any of the veggies that cause gas (cauliflower, broc, green beans, I also give her vitamins.....)So I can't figure out what the problem is. I have to feed her an early dinner so it gives her hours to digest the food before it is time for bed. My ped suggested I try a different formula. He gave me a sample of Enfamil Nutramigen Lipil. This is a Hypoallergenic Formula for babies with Colic and Cow's milk protein Allergies. I have no idea if she is allergic to cow's milk. I tried the formula but my baby refuses to eat it because it is so different from her normal formula. (it smells funky!) So, I have mixed it in her bottles, 2 ounces new formula and 4 ounces old formula. This seems to be working so far. In a few days I will up the mixture. Unfortunatly, it is going to take a while to know if it actually works. This formula is twice the amount of money then regular formula and only comes in a 16 oz canister.
She has been waking up with gas pains for almost 4 months now. I have mentiond the gas issue to my ped, but he told me that every baby has gas and to let her cry it out. I just can't do that knowing she is in pain. (I never take her out of her crib, I just give her a hug and lay her back down) The doctor that recommended trying this formula was a ped that I see when my normal ped is not available.
Has anyone ever tried this formula, or any hypoallergenic formula? Does anyone has a gassy baby? What did you do to help your baby. I have heard of giving beano, but the product does not suggest giving it to babies unless suggested by a doctor. I haven't talked to mine about it yet.
Oh by the way, I breast feed for 7 months until my body was not able to produce enough milk for her.
Help!

My son was very gassy and uncomfortable when we switched to formula. We tried Enfamil Gentlease and that still didn't work. We heard from someone to try Carnation Good Start and it was awesome! I think it doesn't have as many proteins for them to digest. It also doesn't smell like some other formulas. Hope this helps!

We were on that formula for awhile, but the docs. recomended not using it long term. Similac formulas and Enfamil formulas tend to be a little harsher on the tummies. Have you ever tryed goodstart? It doesn't smell as bad forsure. You need to be on a foumula for 3 days straight to see if it will work or not. Plus you may want to stop the vitamins you are giving her, vitamins can be very h*** o* babies tummies. My ped. does not even recomend it until after 1 year because of the harshness on their poor little bellies. If you have ever taken a vitamin on an empty stomach you know the feeling. If your baby is on formula (look at the back of the can) she is getting all of the vitamins she needs plus more, there is no need for extra. In fact your baby could have to much iron in her system if she is taking formula and a vitamin with iron. Check with your ped. but I am sure just stopping the vitamins would work wonders.

My son has always been gassy and being that he's half african american puts him at a higher risk for lactose intolerance. However, I chose to breastfeed him anyways because the benefits outweigh the negatives. I now have added in a soy formula in a 95-5 ratio of breastmilk to formula... I have said all that just to say that since doing that he is less gassy and I have a feeling it has something to do with his formula... so it's worth giving it a try. I use Earth's Best Organic formula found at your local health food store. It costs about $15 a can. I don't know what yours cost, but i do know that NONE of it is cheap! You could try giving this formula to her and give it to her warm instead of cold. My son won't take it cold so that might be something to try with your daughter as well :)

Your pediatricna could be on the right track.. First of all, iron can cause constipation which leads to gas...you might try a low iron formula. Second, one of my six children had an allergy to cow's milk/dairy/protein (protein even in eggs like the egg yolks) so don't discount this. We actually gave her soy form the Asian market (less expensive than soy formulas) but please check with your pediatrician first.

Also, you might want to try Mylicon or gripe water drops. Consult your pediatrician. http://www.cleftadvocate.org/gripewater.html

My son is 13 months now but back when he was on formula he would get gassy now and again and we used the Mylicon Gas Drops and just put them in his bottle. It totally helped him not get gassy after drinking it. My friend had to change her son to Soy formula because nothing was helpin his little tummy. He is doing great now. Hope that helps! =0)

I also would recommend the gas drops. My son was very Gassy and I switched him to the Dr. Browns bottles and he seemed to respond well to them. It didn't stop the gas 100% but seemed to help some. My son is also currently on the Earths Best Organic formula and does really well with it. I know my sister n law really like the Good Start formula also. Also, make sure your using a low flow or level 1 nipple so your baby girl is sucking too fast and getting a lot of air. I hope it works out. The gas drops were a necessaity in my house for about 4 months. Her tummy may just need a little longer to develop.

I'm a lactation educator with A Mother's Haven in Encino. There's a little phenomenon called chicken hair that happens in babies with a dairy allergy. Their hair will stand straight up on end and they are usually very fussy. If she has this and you cut all dairy from her diet you'll see her hair gradually relax and lay flat again in about 3 weeks (it takes at least that to get dairy 100% out of our systems).

As for formulas, Carnation Goodstart is the easiest on their tummies.
