I have never been on a vacation let alone to a travel agency. What do they do, are they different from the online agencies (like hotwire, cheaptickets, etc...)and do they charge a large amount for what they do? My other question is if anybody has ever been on a cruise and if you have maybe you could make a suggestion.

What can I do next?

Yes, check out www.skyauction.com. You bid on trips. It's amazing! I've been on some incredible trips (flight & accommodations)that were unbelievable given the little we paid. Read it thorouughly and good luck!

We have been on a cruise and loved it. However with children, especially a baby, it might not be as enjoyable for a few reasons. The rooms are small, most cruise ships have kids camp type facilities but don't take the babies and excursions will be difficult because most won't be appropriate for babies. Cruising is so much fun though and from what I've heard Carnival is the most family friendly. From a financial standpoint I wouldn't go on one during our summer because that's when everyone else is so the prices are a bit higher. We went the last week of April, the price was good on a 7 day out of Galveston, the weather was perfect, and the ship wasn't too crowded.

As far as travel agencies go I've never used one. We do most of our own research and booking. I would use one though if I were going out of the country. For the cruise I went directly thru Carnival. Their prices were the same as other discount cruise websites. Enjoy your vacation!

I would strongly suggest using a travel agency! They do not charge you anything. There pay comes out of the resorts or ships or where ever you want to go. As a rule they'll shop until they find you the best deal. Our travel agent works in the North Park mall for Dillards. His name is Greg and he is awesome. You can do everything with him via email. So you don't have to worry about going out of your way. Good luck and have fun!!

Hi
We too have never been on a cruise but just booked one for our 5th year anniversary. We are going on a carnival 8 days/7 night cruise out of Galveston in September for a total of $1268 .( that is for both of us in a room with an ocean view!)
I did a lot of research before we bookedtalked with a local travel agency, got on the hotwire/discount sites, got on Carnivals site, etc and finally booked through an agency out of Florida called Buy Cruises. We had family who had used them and had actually already booked themselves on this cruise 3 months agowe called there agent at Buy Cruises and they worked to get us on the same cruise for the same priceit was wonderful. Since I am a first time cruiserthey really helped me understand al the ins and outsanswered all my questions, explained how things worked, etc AS you can tell, I highly recommend them!
Here is there number if you are interested with an extension to the two reps who helped me so much

And Shelley or Bob can help you. Both are great!
