Switching Daughter to Solid Food and off of Bottles

My daughter will be a year old on Monday and I'm trying to get her used to solid food. She will eat just about anything off of our plates for as long as you will feed her. However, if I put her in the highchair and feed her solid peas, then she gets tired of eating them before she is full and then she chows down her baby food. I'm guessing this just takes time for her to get used to eating solely adult food? My other concern is that I'm not sure she should still be having bottles. I am still on formula until I go to the doctor and he tells me its ok to start weaning her onto whole milk. She has a 4 oz bottle before her morning nap, a 6 oz before her afternoon nap and a 6 oz before bed. Is this too many bottles? I know I should be switching to sippy cups, but I'm not ready and I don't think she is quite yet either, but don't worry I will do it soon! My concern is if she should be having that much formula in the first place? Sorry, this is so long and confusing!

Let me clarify some things that other people have responded to. My daughter does use a sippy cup during meals and all day she drinks plenty of water. I was just mainly confused about how long babies drink formula and if I should be switching her nap bottles of formula to nap sippy cups of formula or even nap sippy cups of water? *She won't really drink juice as much as water and my ped. says that doesn't matter*

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She's getting better at eating solid food. On good meals she will eat only adult food. Most meals I do end up giving her some baby food to fill her up. I went to the DR today and I will be weaning her onto whole cow's milk soon. He said that the amount of bottles I give her is perfectly fine.

I started to switch my daughter over to solids at 1 year old and it took a few months for it to completely happen. She just wasn't ready to chew all the time and wanted to be feed mashed up foods sometimes. With the bottles, I think it's fine... I started weaning off formula at 11 months so by 1 year she was on milk. My daughter was getting an 8oz before naptime in the afternoon and 8oz before bedtime. Also for when you switch from bottle to sippy cups... The Nuby one seems to be the best! The soft nipple helped with switch and my daughter loves them!

Don't worry about switching her exactly at 12 months. My daughter was on formula until she was 15 months old. She ate plenty of table food, I just liked that she was getting all the vitamins from the formula. Also when I switched my daughter to a sippy cup I used the Nuby brand(Walmart) because of the soft mouth piece, it was a easy transition because of that! Hope this helps!!

well, i think that you should start introducing the sippy cup now.. even while she's on the bottle. i have a 2 and a half year old and a 13month old. they both used the cup at the same time as the bottle.. its easy for them to get used it before you take the bottle away entirely. and i personally dont think that's too much formula at all.. my daughter drinks about that much too still. and my doctor just told me to start her on milk. preferrably not whole b/c honestly, its just too fatty, and a lighter milk might be easier for them to digest. but even then the doc said she doesn't need a lot of milk. b/c that curbs their appetite for real food. and i think with your daughter, shegoes for the baby food probably out of habit and b/c its a lot easier to eat.. less work for her. ya know.. she doesn't have to chew it up so its easier for her.. but just keep at it.. i heard that around a year old kids kinda lose their appetites a little b/c they get so mobile and so interested in other things, and they are growing so fast.. but then the appetite comes back b/c they start using so much energy.. i would just keep introducing the new foods, and the sippy cup. start with water that way she'll grow to like drinking water.. she might be uninterested at first but after a week of handing her the cup and letting her get familiar with it, i guaratee she'll start to like using it. and wean her of the bottle when you're ready. you dont have to do it right away at the one year mark. just ease into it. as she gets used to the cup offer her those instead of the bottle before naps, then eventually you can lose the bottle. either way good luck, and i hope everything works out well!

Doctors suggest you start to give sippy cups when 6 months. The longer you wait the harder it will be for you, really. I just know its not as hard as you think, to switch them. All babies are diffrent thou. You can start to give her Milk whenever you ready. I started at 11 months. It does not hurt them at all. About the Solids you should give her Solids and Start to use Graduate foods. They are more like whole foods. She will catch on soon enough. I hope this helps.

the first food I gave both of my kids was avocado with a small bit of crushed garlic in it. ( guacamole of a sort)
The fat in the avocado is good for the formation of the brain
i.e. makes them smart, and the garlic is a natural anti biotic. Garlic helps keep them from infections and colds.
They never had ear infections. I never gave them whole milk OR formula. The had goat milk - better for digestion. They also drank clean water never tap water. Now in highschool-one in IB program on in honors program. They drink organic milk to avoid hormones and antibiotics in regular dairy products.
BE SURE TO GIVE CLEAN WATER ONLY>!! p.

My daughter is 11 months eat regular food, three meals a day, (she never liked baby food) and still drinks 4 bottles a day at 6 oz. each (she doesn't always finish them, but still gets them) You will know what is right for you and your daughter. This is my second child, my first was a preemie, so she got to have formula a little longer than most.

Up until a year old they should be taking at least 24 ounces of formula a day (for the nutrients). What ever you do don't put the milk (once shes on it) in her bottles, it'll just make taking them away harder!

Just curious... Why aren't you ready to put her on sippys? Our son has been on sippy cups since he was 7 months, we just put water and juice in them (no formula) and give them to him when he's eating. Also, are you giving her well rounded meals when you put her in the HC? Maybe she's just board with whats in front of her?

Our son is 5 weeks away from his first birthday and on the advice of our ped. we give him breakfast, lunch, and dinner (of grown up food) and then bottles in between. It's getting him ready to be on solids completely and is going very well so far! Hope some of what I said made sense! :) Good luck!!

Hi A.. My son would get sick every time I tried to give him regular milk, they do make a formula that is for toddlers. It goes to 24 mths. I wanted to make sure that he got the vitiams he needed. ( 4-6oz.a day)then I started mixing the formula plus whole milk until his body got use to it make sure to mix the formula with the water too. Its to much on their little kidneys if you mix it with only with the milk. Also try to give alittle pasta, potato, rice with dinner it fills them up. I use to mix the veggies into it so he couldnt only eat the starch. But be careful I think that I gave my son peas one to many times when he was little, to this day he only squishes them between his fingers. I have had to get creative so that he will eat his veggies. Like I steam cauliflower and chop it finely and mix it with mash potatoes or I make a veggie spaghetti sauce (carrots, brocc, ect.)When your the mother of a picky eater the food processor is your best friend! Just another friendly suggestion stay away from McDonalds for as long as you can. once you start It becomes a nightmare.:)

Once your daughter turns 1 yr old then you can give her whole milk and stop the formula unless she has an allergy to milk. I started my daughter on solid foods when she was 10 mths old, so the processs went great she loved to feed herself and be in control. I would start switching your daughter from baby food to your food. Instead of feeding her baby food for dinner I would give her your food, it really doesn't matter if you feed it to her or if she feeds herself as long as she is getting use to the different texture of regular food. To be honest by 11 mths my daughter was strictly on table food. If your daughter can chew good then I would eliminate the baby food. Once she starts to eat the regular food then I would encourage her to feed herself. I always clap and make a big deal when my daughter eats with a spoon that now she will put some food in her mouth with the spoon and then clap and scream. She gets so excited and happy. my daughter loves any type of pasta, vegetables or cheese so I would start off with something you daughter will probably like. Just to let you know that your daughter is ready for regular food at 1, all of the daycares only feed 1 yr olds regular food unless they have an allergy or some problem so most children your daughter's age are totally off of baby food.
