Suggestions for Terrible Diaper Rash

Help! My 12 mo. old son has a TERRIBLE case of diaper rash, and has for several weeks now. I have tried Boudreux's Butt Paste, Triple Paste, Flanders Buttocks Ointment, Desitin, Bag Balm, letting him go without a diaper to air dry, giving him Benedryl, changing his diaper hourly, and a mixture of diaper rash cream and Liquid Maalox (the pediatrian's suggestion). Nothing has worked. His little behind is all red welts (some of them bleeding), and it has even spread to his penis and testicles. He is supposed to have surgery on his penis in a week and a half and I am beginning to be afraid that they won't be able to operate if the rash isn't cleared up. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything else we can try? I am at my wit's end, and he is in so much pain. This all seemed to come about once we started a steady diet of table food as opposed to baby food. I have tried eliminating all fruits that are particularly citrusy or acidic and haven't changed diaper brands or anything...Thanks for your help!

the best thing to use, because my son has very sensitive skin and when he gets a really bad rash the only thing I could every find to help is use a warm wash cloth and no more wipes, and also the only diaper rash cream is Aveno diaper cream made w/ oats it draws it all out of the skin.

I realize this post is almost a year old, but my son has sensitive skin and when he breaks out in to a bad rash like that I only use Dr. Smiths, Aquaphor and put him on a strict BRAT diet. Works like a charm everytime! We cannot use Desitin at all - he comes off the table!

Sounds like it could be a yeast infection, or possibly even a food allergy (dairy, nuts, etc.). I see you've eliminated acidic fruits, but it's quite possible it's something other than those.

Try going back to just the baby food if you can. After the rash clears up, slowly re-introduce the other foods, one at a time (at least 3 days in between) and watch for reactions.

Hi K.! It sounds like you've tried everything. I'll tell you the best I found is Dr. Smith's Diaper Ointment. It's AMAZING!!! Everyone I've recommended it to says the same thing. I get it at Walmart or Target (sometimes behind the pharmacy counter). It's awesome. I hope you try it to see if it will work. I know your son's seems pretty serious. Hope it works!! Good Luck!

Try Balmex diaper ointment! I had the same problem with my youngest, and I would put this stuff on really thick. It really did the trick! Also, I found out by recording what I fed my daughter that corn made her have a horrible diaper rash. Also, ketchup is an offender. Remember juices can do it too. Good luck!! She outgrew all of these "food intolerances". :)

When my daughter was about the same age, she would get a terrible rash also. Hers would be bright red like a sunburn and she'd scream if anything touched it. It also would show up suddenly w/ no other symptoms present at the previous diaper change. We used Lotrimin AF (3-4 times a day then used Dr. Smith's Diaper Cream??. It's the one in the little tub. We got it at Walmart and Tom Thumb) and wet paper towels instead of wet wipes. This worked most of the time. She did have one really bad bought that needed an RX for Nystatin. I don't think you can get that over the counter. Also, coolish baths w/ no soap helped tone hers down some. We later discovered that it seemed to flare up when she ate black beans, strawberries or if she was teething. I hope you find something that worksfor you. Good luck w/ his surgery.

Hi K.. Have you ever heard of Ambroderm? It is a natural product for any skin related problems. You can't buy it in the store though. It is a FANTASTIC skin ointment! Call me @ ###-###-#### and I can deliver you a bottle (if you order online, it would take a few days, and I KNOW the diaper rash needs to be treated right away!)
God Bless,

P.S. Go to www.Manntech.com and find out more about Ambroderm and Ambrotose.

You might ask if you can try Lotrimin or Monistat cream. It might be a yeast diaper infection. I also have great luck with Balmex and the huggies diaper cream. My son has had a diaper yeast infection and Lotrimin (an anti fungal) has cleared it up in no time.

Could it be a yeast infection. My son has had several bad rashes and the little bumps usually meant (for him) it was a yeast infection (yes even boys get them). My ped gives my nystatin to help, but you can try an over the counter remedy like Monistat or whatever.

You can also try www.dallasareamoms.com. It is a GREAT message board for moms in the area. Someone on there may have better advice@ Good luck!

I must say that the miracle cream for us has been Aquaphor - found either in the diaper aisle with the rash ointments or with the body lotions. Put it on the site very liberally and then my pediatrician's nurse said to apply your regular rash ointment on top of that. Put it on at every diaper change. We saw improvement at the next diaper change! And it got better! Good luck!

I ran into that when my daughter was around 12 months also. She would have diareah for almost a week. Although she wasn't getting blisters it was still bad and uncomfortable for her. My mother in law suggested to place cornstarch in her diaper. You need to put quite a bit in the diaper. This will help absorb the urine so that the baby's bottom remains dry. The rash is because there is to much moisture. The corn starch helped the best, when nothing else worked. Keep me updated and let me know how this works. You will need to do it for a while, don't get discouraged. It will eventually go away.

Hello!
My only advice would be to try "Dermacort" from Melalueca. It's not specifically made for diaper rashes, but you can use it for that and just about anything else skin related. It's been like a miracle cream for us, curing all of the kids skin problems, diaper rashes. It was referred to me by my surrogate mom, who has had medical experience. She came across it and used it on her grandson, who had a HORRIBLE diaper rash caused by some kind of bacteria gotten by swimming in a lake. His bottom went from bleeding blisters (resembling ground meat) to perfect pink in just a couple of days. You don't have to use much, it spreads super easy, and the best part is that it immediantly soothes and cools, no burning at all. The smell isn't that bad either. Mom sells it for $7.00 a tube, but I think you could get it offline at Melaleuca.com. Melaleuca: The Wellness Company is a all natural kind of company, they make tons of stuff to make your whole home healthier.
I hope it works and your poor little man gets better. Good luck with the surgery.

Try Dr Smiths ointment and mix in some neosporin (sp?), then put a layer of vasoline on top of it to create a barrier. I have also used dermoplast spray before with good results, seems to help with the pain. Also try tylenol or motrin for pain. We use night time diapers so no moisture is against the skin and change the diapers every hour. My son gets bad rashes when taking certain antibiotics - this has worked for us in the past. Good luck, I know how painful it can be for the whole family!

My daughter got a really bad rash like you are talking about when she was a baby and the only thing that worked for her was to stop using disposable diapers and swich to cloth. After a couple of months we swiched back and had no problems since then. It was a big pain, but did the job. The only kind she could use that wouldn't cause a rash was pampers. I'm not sure if you have tried swiching brands, but it might help.

We use Dr. Smith's Diaper cream on our son, and it worked great (it's over the counter, but is usually kept in the pharmacy). . . but he never had anything that severe. A friend of mine's little girl had something similar to what you are describing, and her pediatrician prescribed a special burn cream (used usually only for severe burn victims) - it was a couple years ago, so I doubt she remembers the name, but maybe you can ask your doctor or google on the internet for burn cream. Have you tried blow drying? The ointment is designed to block out wetness but the skin must be completely dry before it works. First you clean the baby then blow dry carefully with warm (not hot) air. Then you apply the ointment. I used a different brand than you mentioned called AD or something. Anyway, my daughter would clear up in about 2 days. I also changed her diaper every hour while I was doing this.

My daughter often gets a rash like you are describing (yeast rash) and I have tried the Maalox, but it doesn't really work plus it is a pain. The last time she got it my doctor recommended Lotrimin (I use the Kroger brand)the foot stuff. It comes in a small tube, costs about $5.00 and just put a little on and then I put the reg. diaper creme directly on the diaper. In a couple of days it should clear it up. Also, don't use wipes use warm paper towels or old rags with warm water to wipe when changing his diaper. It usually takes a week to really clear but you should see an improvement within a couple of days. I hope this helps I know that when it starts to bleed they don't like to have their diapers changed cause their bottoms hurt.

In a situation like this you should call your peditrican and tell them that nothing is working espically if he is having surgery soon. What works for some babies does not always work for yours. Taking suggestions from other moms on this subject may cause your baby to have an allergic reactions and the situation could become worse. Its happened many times. This is just my opinon.

Hi K.,
Did the doctor actually see the rash???? My son had a terrible rash too and it turned out to be a yeast infection. The doctor prescribed an antifungal cream and it cleared up within a few days. If it is just a "diaper rash" the best advice I can give you is expose it to air as much as possible. I know you may have a few messes on your hands, but that works best (and fast).

Hi K., My Dr. has a booklet that says sometimes diaper rashes are actually yeast infections and this is what they recommend.
Clean diaper area with warm water and Cetaphil cleanser(generic is ok) with each diaper change. Use Gyne-Lotrimin Cream or Lotrimin AF and apply 3 times daily. Keep area as dry as possible, but don't use powders. It should improve after 3 days, but may take up to 2 weeks for yeast infection to totally clear.

Hi K. -

Sounds like it could be a yeast-type diaper rash. Those won't respond to typical diaper rash ointments. Your doctor will have to prescribe something or you can try the women's yeast infection creams from the store - someting with nystatin. Did your ped see the rash when he suggested the cream and Malox or did you call in? If it's been more than a week, I'd definitely get him in to see the ped (& I'm not a big fan of docs.) I found a good article about hte different types of diaper rashes and what to do for each on WebMD. I'll try copying the link here, but if it doesn't come thru, email me back and I'll send it to you directly.
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/119/113530.htm
I've got 3 boys - youngest one got a yeast rash first week. Checked my baby book, suspected it was yeast & got yeast cream from store & meds from dr and went away quick! Hope this helps!

Hi K.. I am Arbonne independent consultant. Arbonne has a diaper rash cream, that honestly, I have been fortunate enough not to have to use. My second one has had virtually no diaper rash. So, I don't have a testimony on that particular product. However, I know all of Arbonne's products that I have used up to this point have given me amazing results. I use the baby oil on my young one for his eczema and it clears it up completely. I notice that if I quit using it, the eczema returns, and when I start back up, it clears up. Also, when my oldest had diaper rash, I had a lot of success with Burts Bees Lemon Oil. Where are you located in Frisco? I am in far North Dallas, but actually have a mtg tonight in Frisco at 6:30. If you are in close range, I would be happy to drop off some Arbonne samples, and if I can find my bottle of lemon oil, I'll bring that too. Let me know. N.

Gee K. I just don't understand how this can be a regular diaper rash after trying all the old 'faithfuls'.

I was going to recommend a combination of the following: Triple Paste + Aquaphor + Mylanta
My sons have had really bad rashes especially during teething/cutting molars. I try to change them every 15 to 30 min during this time. I would use a tissue, dip into Triple Paste and then Aquaphor and then the Mylanta....smear all over rash. I also cut back on acidic stuff like juice and fruits.

I don't know what else to tell you. Have you considered a second opinion or going to the nearest health food store?

Good luck and hope your little guys is feeling better soon!

Did you take him into the pediatrician? My son recently had a case of strep down there. He, too, has a persistent rash (been around since January), but it's not bad like your son's. It got worse a few weeks ago and I took him in and she tested it for strep and sure enough it was strep. Maybe that's what your son has. So now the strep is gone but the old rash is still there- oh well. It's not bad and bleeding or anything. I'd definitely take him in if you haven't.

Its so hard to watch your baby with such a terrible rash but we've all been there. So here's what you do.. it sounds like it's beyond rash and into yeast infection. Maalox is AWESOME for rash, but when it becomes fungal and no longer bacterial, then you need to get Lotrimun (athletes foot stuff) or Vagisil (for yeast infections, get the generic stuff, it starts with a Cyt or Clyto something or other, I can't remember) and put those on to see if it helps. Depending on the kind of infection one will work and the other wont. Air dry is still a good idea. but DO not put any butt cream on him. While it provides a protective barrier for future wastes, it also makes a nice warm covered home for the fungus already living and they are thriving under it. And, since you're changing him every hour, you don't need that protective layer because he's not sitting in it long enough to hurt him further.

Let me know if you have questions!

(PS. My info comes from the fact that I've been through this with my own kid and my mom is a pediatric nurse and she told me to do this and it's always worked)

We went through this with our son when he was on antibiotics. NOTHING worked until our pediatrician in NC prescribed something he called "Magic Butt Cream" (I kid you not...that's what was on the prescription label on the container). Our local pediatrician (Dr. Yuri Cook - whom we love) prescribed essentially the same thing in an ointment form for our daughter. It's a combination of an antifungal (that's the part that needs a prescription) with zinc oxide and hydrocortisone (or something similar), and I think one more ingredient. It's expensive because it has to be compounded by a compounding pharmacy (the tub for our daughter was compounded at a pharmacy on Allen Drive in Allen), but one tub took us through our son's time in diapers and I expect the same to be true with our daughter, since I use over-the-counter stuff normally as a preventative and only break out the "magic" stuff if a problem develops.

It was amazing with our son...he went from screaming (and I mean SCREAMING) to happy in 5 minutes after I put the stuff on him, and his rash was visibly better within hours. He never had a bad rash again because if it started getting bad I would use the magic butt cream.

I don't know who your pediatrician is, but I would ask the nurse there...or contact Dr. Cook (Raintree Pediatrics in Allen).

Hi K.,

If you can get crystals of potassium permagnet, then add few in water just to make water color puple, (not too dark, for this size of 2-3 rice grain size equivalent) and wash his affected area and allow young man to air dry for most of the time and it will take care of this and wash him with this water 3-4 times a day, and all the scars will go away slowly, not to wory, i had to use this as last resort with my 10 mos old son and it worked wonders. After that make sure he is not wet for long , specially when the baby has diaherrea.

Poor baby and momma :( My son got his first diaper rash after starting solid foods also, specifically I think it was after having wheat bread. I don't know if you have tried bathing him after each dirty diaper. That's what I ended up doing. Wait till he messed, undressed him, ran the water, and plunked him in. A little soap and not really bathing, just rinsing for a few minutes. Then naked time for awhile (30 min or less) then fresh thick diaper cream (Boudreaux's worked well for us then a layer of the heavier Desitin or Balmex, I used 2 layers) then the dry diaper. It did suck (pardon me) chasing him with a towel in case he peed somewhere and having to bathe him 3-4 times a day but that is the only routine that worked for us. I have also heard cornstarch baby powder helps too. Good luck! Angela

Hi K.,
I have a 20 month old and whom has had really bad diaper rashes from antibiotics and has very sensitive skin. I use Aquaphor and Johnson's Baby powder that is pure cornstarch every time I change him if he has a rash. I also went to that Family Health Market on Lebanon and Preston and picked up some children's acidophilus it is called Primadophilus. It is in a powder form and I give him a 1/2 teaspoon once or twice a day in some apple sauce or even mix it up in his water or juice. I only do that if he has a rash. I have also heard, but never tried anifungal cream (like for you feet) can work. I also give him lots of play time in the bath and sometimes use a warm wash cloth instead of wipes. Hope this helps.

I have not used this before, but I have heard the Arbonne diaper cream is very good. It's a fairly new company...it's kind of like Mary Kay with reps that sell the product. I think you can shop in-line at www.arbonne.com like I've said, I've never used this before, but have heard this is a really good line of products. Good luck.

You may want to try super dooper diaper goop and they have it only at Northside Pharmacy in McKinney. It was actually created by a Pediatrician and pharmacist years ago. You don't need a perscription, just ask for it at the counter. Fortunately, my kids haven't had a lot of diaper rashes, however, it has worked wonderfully when they have had them. Northside pharmacy is located on 380 just east of 75 on the right hand side.
Good luck,
K.

It could be a yeast infection - you might try a topical cream like the one included in the monistat boxes. If you're breastfeeding, I've heard that putting breastmilk on diaper rash works wonders.

I got a product called DYPORTEX at my baby shower and it is wonderful. My sister in law bought it for us and the only place that you can find it is Walgreen's but it is good stuff.

I would suggest asking your pediatrician about "Bactriban" (it may not be spelled correctly). My daughter went through that when she was a baby and it scared me to death. The bactriban worked in a day or two.
Hope everything goes well with the surgery!

My daughter had the same diaper rash problem whenever she was teething she would bleed. The only thing that worked for her was Hydrocortisone Ointment usp,2.5%. However, you do need a precription to get this. My daughter cleared up in about three to five days. Maybe ask your Dr. if they can suggest or prescribe something for your son so he could clear up before his surgery.

It is so hard as a mom to watch your child in pain everytime you change thier diaper:(

Hang in there and I hope everything works out.

You may already be doing this, but don't use wipes at all, not even for a poopy. At each diaper change soak his bottom in warm water. Air dry completely and then apply creamy desitin. This usually cleared up my girls in a few days. If it doesn't clear up, it may be something more than diaper rash. I hope this helps.

Have you tried A & D ointment? It is wonderful, both the medicated and the regular. My vet (horses) told us years ago to use it is excellent at accelerating wound healing because the first thing the epilethial (top layer) skin cells need for repair is Vit A & D. Also I think it has E, and pure vasoline which is a great barrier against additional irritation once the surface is clean and dry. It was awesome for the horses and irritation free so when I finally had children, I naturally used it on both of them. It has never failed me no matter how bad the rash. My son also had surgery down there and it was wonderful on the scars and in keeping them protected from urine exposure while healing. Also, my daughter used to drink so much apple juice she would eventually "blister" her bottom from the then acidic urine and loose stools from the juice (at which point of course we stopped the juice for a while!). Several times the irritation was so severe she got the welts and blisters and it looked really red and painful, but I went right to the A & D esp after a nice bath, coating her entire bottom area and in no time she would be all better, often by the next morning! It is a great nightime protective coating to prevent urine from irritating tender skin, we always use it after the bath before bedtime. Seems the trick is to put it on clean, dry skin and then keep the skin clean and dry with the ointment on top. Sometimes I would literally "dip" her in a bath a few times a day just to be sure there was no residue of stool etc and then apply. Works wonders!

Hi,

We had this problem as well, and ultimately the only thing that worked was Aquaphor. Apply it liberally with every diaper change, and you should see results almost immediately. I was shocked at how well and how quickly it worked! Now that is all we use for diaper rash and chapped lips/cheeks.
Good luck!

Try Dr Smiths rash cream. You will have to get it from behind the pharmacy counter, they do not keep it out on the shelves. It is about $7, but it works like magic. Apply it after every diaper change. Also, I would get some sensitive skin wipes to use. My daughter had terrible rashes like this and the Dr Smiths usually did the trick. Every now and then we would also have to use Lotrim on her bottom along with the Dr Smiths.
I hope this helps.

Hi K.,
You poor thing, and your poor son! I empathize with you! The best ointment out there is Dr. Smith's. Walgreen's carries it, and sometimes WalMart and Target, but sometimes you have to ask the pharmacist for it, since they only have it behind their counter. Here's another thing that you should talk to your doctor about. My daughter had some other spots down there, which wouldn't go away, so they were some other fungus or infection. So my doctor told me to use Lotrimin cream (anti-fungal) and also Cortisone. I used just a little and was careful not to let any go too close or internal to her privates. Please take caution, and talk to your doctor before trying these, though. Good luck!

Sorry about your little one.
When my boys(mom of 1 yr old and 2 1/2yr old) have a diaper rash.I alternate hydrocortizone cream and a prescription called nystatin then glob aquaphor over the area after every diaper change. That seems to work pretty well for them. There was one diaper rash that was pretty bad and my pedi had a compound med called Cholestyramine 10%/aquaphor that I would apply after every diaper change.I could only get it a a pharmacy called Community Pharmacy in Denton. Hope this helps.

I wonder if he's having an allergic reaction to the diapers themselves.

My son's haven't had diaper rashes to that degree, but what I do each time I change my son's diaper is I rub vaseline on the diaper in the buttock and genital area to make sure those areas are receivng enough moisture. I've done it on both children and I think they've had one or two rashes in their lives.

My mother and law suggested Niosporin for our son and it seems to work best. It was originally invented to cure diaper rash for astronauts! The only problem is getting it to stay so I use Aquafor on top , a very thick layer. Another girlfriend suggested Lotrimin which her pediatrician told her about and that seems to work also. The cheapest place I've found to buy both is at Costco, since they are both real expensive when you have to use a lot! Good luck!
