Hi-
I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions and experiences with product lines that feature chemical free, all natural baby wash and lotions. Now that the warmer weather is here, my daughter will be getting more frequent baths and I want to be sure I am using the most gentle products to help keep her skin healthy and soft.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you ladies that responded to my request. I was very happy to see all the suggestions so quickly! I decided to start with Burt's Bees b/c it is easy to find and I am a already a fan of the Mama's lotion for the pregnant belly. We'll see how this goes; however, I am glad to know that I have back-up products to try next if need be.

Hi:
We use Ecover laundry detergent and cleaning products. A wonderful company and gentle products to babies and the environment. Also, California Baby is a line I recommend. We use their baby soap/shampoo and bought their sunscreen. It is expensive, but we use it sparingly. I often just bathe our baby with warm water to avoid using soap/products with each bath. I hope this was helpful!

I love California Baby products, you can buy them in bulk straight from the company. All natural, chemical free and smell great. The only thing I don't like about the baby wash is that it doesn't lather up very much but it seems to do the job. I bought the gallon size of their lavender and tee tree oil baby wash last August and I don't think I have gone through half the container. I use it to bath my two girls every night and use it in their soap dispensers. Tee tree oil is suppposed to be a natural lice deterent.

I use a shampoo made by Modern Organic Products. It's a formula especially for infants and toddlers called pear shampoo. I use it all over on body and hair and it works great for my 2 boys with eczema prone sensitive skin. You can check out the company website at www.mopproducts.com and look under the products and shampoos tab. I'm not sure where to buy it around here, as we just moved here, but it's sold online and at salons and you can look up locations on their website. Good luck!

I'm using Weleda, Burts Bees, Jason, and Dr. Bronners.
Don't believe anything that says "natural." If you want organic, you may have to go to a health food store or co-op, although Stop + Shop and Price Chopper both have Burts Bees and some other less evil options. Avoid ingredients you can't pronounce unless they're the scientific names of plants. There are also lots of resources for making your own soaps and cleaning products if you're crafty. They make great gifts. One year I made chap stick for people, you'd have thought I was Madame Curie!

Another site to look at is www.safemama.com. This site has all sort of info on both baby products where it offers suggestions of healthy and safe bath products along with info on plastics and other potentially harmful chemical related products we have in our homes. It also uses the cosmetics database as a reference, so you know they are working in conjunction and won't get conflicting information.
Good luck!

Hi A.,

I tried Burt's Bees and Avalon Organics lotions and oils and they both gave my baby a rash. The things that worked best for us were
1) Aquaphor (this isn't organic, and it is petroleum based, but it is unscented and very mild, and 2) organic grapeseed oil.

I don't sell either of these things out of my home.

You can get Aquaphor and pretty much any drugstore and the grapeseed oil I got at Whole Foods.

Hi A., Shaklee offers an all-natural baby shampoo & baby bath in one that is great. It is called "Small Wonder", and they also have a creamy baby oil. You can check these out at my web site www.emilytaft.com as I am a Shaklee Distributor. I give this duo as a new baby gift whenever the occasion arrives, and the moms have been really happy with the products and continue to order the shampoo & baby bath. The baby oil is great but is mostly used just on infants, and some pediatricians now frown on using any oil; so it is a personal choice - as is everything. Please let me know if I can answer any questions. When you open up my home page, click "Personal Care" on the menu at the left of the page. Then scroll down and click into "Baby Care". Then click into "Baby Shampoo & Bath". Here you can read about it and also scroll down under the pricing to click into the red icon that says "Read Label", which will tell you exactly what the ingredients are. If you choose to order, just proceed as you would at any other secure website. Please contact me with any questions at all. If you are local, I would be happy to include what you want in my next order and deliver it to you if that is more convenient for you. I am in Georgetown - where are you? Please let me know. Best Wishes. E. Taft ###-###-#### ____@____.com

Weleda has a childrens line of healthy options. I used their calendula bar soap for bath time, a warming apricot after bath oil, and calendula cream for any skin irritation; diaper area or elsewhere. You can find weleda at most health food stores. they do make sampler kits, so you can try it out on a small scale first. My children are 12 & 9 and I still use weleda products with them. Give it a try, I hope you like it. To look closer at the company and it's products go to their website; usa.weleda.com

Take a look at the ingredient list and make sure that there is no quaternium-15 (formaldahyde) on the list. Many baby washes have it as one of the main ingredients. So scary!! Let me know if you're interested in learning more about better, safer products sold by Melaleuca. They're an absolutely great company that does not put harmful chemicals in their products and they have a home, bath, cosmetic, baby/kids, phamaseudical, vitmain, and pets line.

Weleda is excellent and smells wonderful (also easy to find i.e. Whole Foods)! Weleda uses biodynamic ingredients (biodynamic agriculture has higher standards than organic). Druide is also so good, but a little harder to find try Hatched (5 Green St. in Jamaica Plain) or online. They have the most amazing foam baths (try "Breathing"). They are a small company based in Canada that uses organic ingredients.

Hi A.-
I would start by finding ingredients that you definitely don't want to be putting on your kids. it is more complicated than one product line. you can look at livingorganiclife.org- the provide a toxic list of ingredients to avoid. parabens- which are in almost everything as a preservative, mimic hormones in the body- very scary over a lifetime. there are so many others.... aubrey organics also has a littel toxic ingredients list you can get at a health food store. in general, you won't find anything non-toxic at walmart or any of those stores....
good luck. really it's such a good choice in many ways. these companies making these toxic products are contaminating our world, the people who live around the toxic factories and the people who use their products...people just really don't know yet the dangers of this chemical revolution...congrats for being more aware than most and searching for the truth....your kids will thank you some day.

In my research, the mildest, most basic baby products I've found are Aubrey Organics baby shampoo and soap. All organic, no fragrances or synthetics of any kind, and pretty simple ingredients. I use their shampoo for my daughter and I love it. The Weleda line has a nice calendula soap. For lotions- the best thing I've found is organic virgin olive oil! Avoid anything with lavender or tea tree essential oils in it, or anything in a plastic tube with a #7, or in metallic containers as each of those things can leach estrogen-mimicking substances.

Arbonne and Burts bees are my favorites. Arbonne is vegan (in case that is important to you), and it's great for sensitive skin, but it's expensive. You have to get it from a consultant (apparently there are a lot of them on mamasource so shouldn't be a prob). Burt's bees is less expensive, just as nice IMO and available in most supermarkets in the organic/natural section.

I always look up any products I use on my daughter in the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep website http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com They have lists of products - soaps, lotions, sunscreens, diaper creams... - with safety ratings. You'd be surprised at how many products you think are safe to use that are not, including some with organic ingredients.

I found a soap/shampoo on Skin Deep that I love, called Nature's Paradise Baby Organic 2 in1 Foam Coconut shampoo and body wash. The only ingredients are water and coconut oil and extracts. It smells great and is VERY gentle. I just googled the product name and ordered it online. I highly recommend it and checking out that website.
Good luck!

Hi A.,

I've been using "organic" and/or chemical free products on myself and my daughter who is 2 1/2 now since I was pregnant.

I have found the best body wash/shampoo is California Baby. My daughter has a slight case of exzema, and this has not irritated her skin. I believe the have all different kinds of things in the line of product. It is made with lavender, no parabens, harsh synthetics, etc. If you can't find that, I started out using the Aubrey Organics line before I found California Baby. Good luck in your search!

Hi A.,
Arbonne http://www.seethedifference.myarbonne.com has a wonderful baby line. No nuts, mineral oil, fragrances or dyes are in the products. Very good price and you use so little for each application it lasts a long time. They are in a squeeze bottle, but you can purchase the pumps separately for a dollar and reuse them and it is easier when you have only one hand to use. I have samples if you want to try one before you buy. Let me know. L.

Hi A.. I agree with you on this point. I have used many products that you can get in the drug store and my kids did not agree with them at all. I have an almost 4 year old and 20 month, both girls. I switched to different products about two years ago that a friend of mine recommended to me, I loved them so much and so dod my kids, that I eventually became a rep or the company. It is called Arbonne ABC Baby Care. The whole line is vegan certified, botanically based and I find to be the most gentle products I have ever used on my kids. The suds from the wash can actually get in their eyes and not bother them. I was so excited because it made bath time so much better. They have hair and body wash, body lotion, body oil, sunscreen (works so well), and diaper rash cream. The other thing is that there are no fragrances or dyes added to them, so I have never had an issue with any irritation. Check it out if you have a chance, you can go to the website www.arbonne.com and if you have any questions I would be more than happy to give you some more info. I hope this was helpful!! I like you want to make sure that what I am putting on my kids is healthy for them! K. Symula

Have you tried Arbonne Baby Care Products? They are all an all natural product line developed exclusively for babies & children and adults with senstive skin. There is a hair & body wash, body lotion, body oil, SPF 30+ waterproof sunscreen & an awesome diaper cream which I have often used on rashes on my own body from the garden.

I use these products on my own child and find them extremely gentle & effective, they do not have any added fragrnces, chemicals or animal by-products & are not tested on animals.

I have used Arbonne products for a little less than 5 yrs myself and really think they are the best! Let me know if you'd like help getting some!

When I gave birth to my little guy one of my postpartum nurses told me about it.
