My middle child has has this rash on his body now on and off since May 27th. The first week we definelty thought it was poison ivy. We know what poison ivy looks like. He had it bad its always on his stomach, side or top of his legs. Its a raised rash red. Sometimes he tells me its ithy sometimes not. He has it then I give him a shower and it goes away ..or I put the cream for poison ivy and it goes away. Then yesterday he got it again but the rash was not raised all . It was over his stomach up to his arm pits. We were swimming yesterday in a friends pool. He was using a small inner tube could this time he possibly be allergic to the plastic.
The next time he has a reaction he are going to the dr. I am preplexed what it could be.
He has a more severe rash with raised red areas that resembles poison ivy. Then the other rash he gets is red and blotchy all over his stomach and top of his legs.
Its never on his face ,neck, hands or arms. If it was poison ivy it probably would spread to some of these areas ..right? I hope the rash comes back tomorrow so we can take him to dr and get this resolved. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Could it be sunscreen? I have had rash issues with sunscreen. After buying about a dozen kinds I have narrowed it down to homosalate in the sunscreen. My younger one cries like crazy if I use the wrong kind. My older one just gets a bumpy rash if I use the wrong kind for a few days.

FYI if this is the problem, I have found Coppertone Kids, Coppertone Sensitive, and Keihls to be OK.

It could be a skin condition, or something related to an illness. Either way, I'd call or visit the Dr. Good luck.

If possible, contact your pediatrician and ask over the phone if you trust your pediatrician. My kids (ages 6, 4 and 1) have had strange rashes too - no poison ivy yet. Call the doctor, make the appointment (even if the rash isn't there) - this may lead to something bigger...better safe than sorry. Good luck and hope this doesn't spread to the rest of your family and friends.

Is he outside for long periods of time? Kids can develop heat rash. They get overheated even if you don't think they are and their pores inflame making it like a rash. See http://pediatrics.about.com/od/dermatologytopics/a/06_hea...

In recent weeks has he been unwell at all? Quite often after a child has been sick they develop a rash , my daughter did about a month ago , she has a 48hr diarrhea bug and then around 3 or 4 days later developed a rash that sounds a lot like what you are seeing on your son , it was hot to touch on her arms and legs , she also had it over her torso and cheeks (it had a lace effect) , I took her to the doctor and he said it was parvo (or slapped cheek as more commonly known). She had the rash for around 8 days in total , and some days it was lighter in color and looked like it was gone , but then came back again.

I am allergic to the chlorine in a pool and also certain laundry soaps. The rash you describe is similar to what I have had in the past. If it is poison ivy it would be where ever the oils have spread, so it is unlikely that it would be all over his stomach and not on his arms, hands, neck and face. The Dr may not be able to tell you the cause but should help you determine whether or not it is from coming into contact with something. Good luck!

He may have a food allergy and is getting Hives. Typically, hives occur on the trunk of your body, not the face area. Or, like several of the mom's have said, an allergic reaction to a new detergent, etc. Still worth taking him into a Dr.! Good luck.

I've heard of people having that reaction from the sun. Ya, I would definitely ask about it at the dr. Also, my son had a reaction from a certain kind of sunscreen. Have you used different ones at all? Maybe that's something else you could pay attention too.

That is so hard when dealing with allergies and trying to figure out the cause.

Good luck and maybe keep a journal so all the symptoms stay fresh in your mind!!!

It sounds like a virus to me. One of the little guys I babysit had something similar to this and that's what he had. Does it it seem to come out more when he's warm or exposed to the sun? Hope you find your answer soon!
