I believe once babies are old enough to flip over on their own, they can sleep how ever they like. The problem is when they're face down and can't get air and don't have ability to flip back.

I understand your anxiety. I think that is every moms' worst fear. I also understand that you are particularly sensitive because of the tragedy that happened to your friend. Its totally normal that your baby rolls over, and I don't know of any way to prevent it. What put my mind greatly at ease was an Angel Care Breathing Monitor that a friend gave us when our first child was born. There is a very sensitive motion sensor pad that goes under the mattress that detects movement or breathing. If your baby doesn't have any movement for 20 seconds, an alarm goes off. I've had a few false alarms when one of my kids has scooted to a far corner of the crib, but I'd much rather have a few false alarms than not know if my baby was in distress. Once, when my oldest daughter had a bad cold, the alarm went off in the middle of the night. We ran in there and got her up and she was able to clear her throat and take a deep breath. She probably would have been fine, but I have great peace of mind having it on our crib. My 3rd child is now using it.

My husband just reminded me to mention that if you do use this monitor, you have to be aware that a fan in the room or a mobile that plays constantly will affect the sensor. It would pick up that motion and essentially not work.

Good luck, and I hope this helps you.

The motion sensor PAD is my favorite. I purchased from BB R US and it has helped me so much!! It cost about $80. Another mother recommended www.guardiansleeper.com

Hope this this helps =)

I, too, was fearful of this. When I asked the ped about it she said not to worry too much and that I don't need to flip her back over. I also bought wedges (from Babies R Us) that you can put in the crib to prevent your child from rolling completely over. I had to come to realize that my daughter liked sleeping on her tummy and I was creating a battle out of it. Go with your instincts and do what you feel comfortable with.

I too would recommend the motion sensor pad if you are really scared about it, but at 6 months old I am sure your son could turn his head at least or roll back to his back or side if he wanted or needed to....If he is more comfortable there, I would let him be and get the motion sensor for peace of mind. GOOD LUCK - your son will be fine I am sure!

I have a six year old and a ten year old. Sometimes if they are really still while they are sleeping, I still check to make sure they are still breathing. I think that is a mommy thing that will probably never be outgrown.

At six months I think that it is okay for your baby to turn onto his stomach while he is sleeping. As long as there are not blankets and toys to obstruct him he should still be able to breathe.

If you are uncertain, call your doctor or advice nurse and get an official recommendation. I am sure he will be okay, but if for your peace of mind, you have to keep checking on him over and over until you are convinved he will be okay, that is okay too.

Good luck.

I felt the same way. My doctor told me that once a baby is old enough to turn themselves onto their stomach it is ok for them. Is he turning over when he is awake as well? Being a first time mommy is scary. We want the very best for our baby and can't seem to do enough for them. Every baby is very different and just because your friends baby passed away doesn't mean that yours will. As moms we have to learn to have confidence in our kids which can be a very daunting task. My son almost always sleeps on his stomach now. He has been for the past month or so. What it comes down to is to do what you feel ok with as you need to get some sleep as well!

Hi,

My first child wouldn't nap for very long, until my mom was over and set him down for a nap on his stomach. I almost freaked. She assured me that she was going to stay right there with him. Well, he took the longest nap that afternoon and I decided to let him sleep that way. Two of my children were very definitely happier on their stomachs. I used to worry a little and would often check on them by laying my hand lightly on their backs. But by the time children are six months old, there really is nothing you can do to keep them from sleeping however they want to. The suggestion to use a motion sensor pad is a great one if that will help calm your fears a little. It's amazing how having a baby brings out just how much there is to be concerned about. Enjoy your little one. My fourth and last is almost 2-1/2 and I have no idea where the time went.
