Sleeping Arrangement for Toddler on Vacation

My daughter will be 18mths old when we go on vacation this year. She sleeps in her crib at home and I don't see us converting her to a toddler bed before we go on vacation. She is 30" tall and too big for her pack n play. Any ideas on where she could sleep on vacation?? She doesn't sleep well in the bed with us (tried that on an overnight trip-never again!) I've called the resort and I'm told I could possibly fit a twin mattress in the room she will be in (it has 2 dbl beds). My only concern about the air mattress is her having the ability to walk around freely; therefore, not lying down to sleep! I hate to spend money on bed rails just for a vacation and I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable with her sleeping in a reg bed anyway. I think she would find a way to crawl over the rails or crawl off the end of the bed. She is like most toddlers....if she can find ANYTHING to "investigate" she's on it! :-) (the entire hotel room will be child proofed before we unpack anything!) Looking forward to your ideas! Thank you.

So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for their advice!!!!! I believe we will attempt the pack n play one more time! My daughter is very tall for her age (96 percentile) so she doesn't have alot of "stretching out" room in the pnp (she loves sleeping on her back) but I think we will make do. We put her in it tonight and she has a few inches before her feet come out of one end. :-) I think we will use some foam covered with a sheet to make it a little more comfy for her. Hopefully this will work out for a week... if not... move over Daddy! haha.
Thanks again everyone! I know where to come next time I need advice!

I hope everything worked out with the pack n play. I have a 32" 28mo old girl who until recently slept daily in her pack n play for nap time at the house I nanny for. The only reason I took her out was becuz it was time to get out of the babies room and I felt she would do fine on her little pull out couch for nap. She fit fine in the pnp and did very well in it for a long time. best wishes.

Most hotels we have stayed in can provide cribs on request. I would just bring a crib sheet for it- theirs was like a large pillowcase.

We always carried a portable crib for our children when we went on a vacation. The portable crib really helped out with the sleeping arrangements for the children.

we have 2 kid sized air beds for our kids when we take them on the road and have had them since my daughter was 18 months old and we were moving across country and she was also to big for her pack and play. It's called a ready bed and comes in different colors and characters.

That's an example of one , we got the newest one at Target, and I think I've seen them at Walmart too.
At target they are in that section between the camping stuff and the toys.

If your hotel doesn't have a crib, most vacation towns have rental places. They should be able to give you a number to call. Just be sure to bring your own sheets.
We had brought a flip and fold couch thing for my daughter to sleep on, but she wouldn't stay in it. Our bed is her favorite place, so we just suck it up and get a king bed on vacation to share with her.

Barbara, how big is your pack n play? We have twin girls who are 20 months and we use one daily for one of the girls to nap in. We have another pack n play that we take on overnight trips (so we have 2) and that is what they sleep in. Although they are not as big as their cribs, they sleep great in them. They are so easy to travel with. I would give it a try, much easier than the blow up mattress I would think. Best of luck!

A friend of mine had a toddler. The door had a chain lock. The child would get a chair and pull it to the door and unchain, go outside by himself. A security lock (with a key) is a safety precaution, but I don't know if the motel room has one. Another possibility is a sleeping bag. Tell the toddler that it is an honor to slee in one, since he is so young, that if he doesn't stay in it, he won't get to sleep in it again. Rails they can climb over, and if your toddler is adventuresome, they won't help. Another possibility is to move a table in fron of the door, so it would make a noise when moved. Or, if all else fails, get a doggie rope to attach to you and your toddler. Sorry, that's a last resort.

Hi Barbara.

Here's what we did: We bought a mini-foldout-sofa (with a character - like a Ariel or Cinderella) from someplace like Toys-r-us, and we allowed my daughter to use that for a bed. It actally worked out really well!

Good luck,

Vacation was actually how I got my daughter to start sleeping in a bed. For her, there was no problem with getting up. We put her in a regular bed just because there was no where else for her to sleep and she did great! A mattress on the floor would probably be ideal so you don't have to worry about falling. If she gets up, just go in and put her back in the bed. She'll get the idea. I think you'll find it's easier than you thought, and it will be a relief to know that you have that option for her.

You should just take your baby play yard and set it up around a pallet in the floor. You can lay down comforters and pillows to make a nice bed in the floor that will be comfortable for her and the play yard will keep her from wandering around. Also, play yards are just as portable as pack-n-play and more versatile. Hope this helps. Good luck.

If the hotel does nothave a crib for the use of guests, contact a rental place in that town and rent a crib for your vacation. It will be worth the money. I would be sure and properly clean the crib and mattress and use a good mattress cover over this rented crib although they are required by law to sanitize I would just be extra careful. V.

How big is your pack-n-play? Ours is about 40 inches long so my kids slept in them until they were around 3. Maybe you have a friend who can lend you a bigger pack-n-play.

Go to Target.com
Type in the search: Aero Bed for Kids
It is $79, but worth every dime! My children started using this when we trveled at around 15 months. It is very comfortable and you will get many years of use out of this.

Good luck!

My 30 month old is very tall for age and she still sleeps in her pack n play on vacation. She is technically over the height recommendation, but she does fine in it. We had the same worries in Feb on vacation about her sleeping in a regular bed. So, maybe try her for a nap in the pack n play at home or on a mattress and tell her your playing like your on vacation and see how she does. Have fun!

Barbara, I'm a mother of three who has traveled alot with children. Most hotels I've stayed in have baby beds/cribs they will bring to your room. I have made a thick comfy pallet on the floor next to the wall and build a little "fort" around it with the chairs/small furniture in the room. Have also made the pallet in between the double beds. Good luck!

I use this model: http://www.amazon.com/Marshmallow-Furniture-Flip-Open-Sof... (these come in a variety of different characters, I'm sure you can find something suitable for a girl). I had to lay down with my son when it was time for bed and wait on him to go to sleep so he wouldn't jump right back up. It's not something I'd normally do, but you know how excited kids get on vacation and how hard it is for them to lay down and rest. But, sleep he did, and it was so comfortable I almost fell asleep myself a few times.

I've also tried the inflatable beds that convert into chairs, usually with some type of character on it - this bed was extremely uncomfortable and my son refused to sleep on it. I don't blame him. If you do get a model like this, I'd see about buying a better air pump. The one included reeks.

many hotels can provide a crib at little cost. if you haven't already booked a hotel, i would look for one that has this service. just be sure to do your homework...how old are cribs, do they meet current safety standards, etc.

Have you asked the hotel what kind of cribs they have? One hotel I stayed in had the pack n play but some of the other ones had an actual portable crib. Call ahead of time and see what they have. I hope this helps.

The Kidco Peapod Plus is great for travelling! It is a pop up little tent that you can put anywhere. Our oldest set of twins love them, and we don't have to worry about finding a crib at last minute or hauling around the pack n' play...they fold up into a little circle and have a carrying bag. They are a little on the pricy side, but they're great! Have fun on your vacation!
