i am single mom to a 8 1/2 son that will not go to sleep he will go to sleep around 1:30am can anyone tell me how i can get my son to sleep

1:30 am? Before I can give you any advice I need you to answer a few questions for me:
1. Is he able to get up in the mornings? Can he function at school?
2. What is he doing until 1:30 on the morning?
3. Do you make him stay in his bed?
4. What have you already tried to get him to stay in bed and go to sleep?

I have a 9-yr old daughter and we have tried to keep the same bedtime ritual. This has help set expectations on bedtime. We start at 8pm with bath and teeth brushing, get in bed review our day and read a book if we have time, say prayers and say goodnight. She is in bed by 8:30 every night and stays there, once in awhile she will creep into my bed but since she has gotten a bit older that doesn't happen as much. Hope this helps. I've noticed kids really respond well to consistency.

Have you tired a bath before bedtime. That always seems to work for my son. I also read him a story or two and let him play with the pages as i read to him. I cuddle for a while and talk to him quietly. Maybe that will work for your baby. Let me know how it goes.

My Niece is like this and she will be 6 yrs old this Nov. she wouldnt go to bed until around 130 or 2am.. So around 830 she wasnt allowed any tv to easy her mind a hot bath a story and classical music to help her clear her mind.. My children us to go to bed around 10pm We now get them to go to bed around 8pm by doing this it took about a month of a rountine to get them used to it but it does help.. I hope in some way this helps a little.

C., It would be helpfl to know when he usually gets up, naps and goes to bed to answer that question? Sleep can depend upon those things in a big way. HUGS, hoping it gets better soon!!! :-)

Try giving him some massage and bathe him in the night, at around 9:30-10.00 P.M or so.
They generally feel sleepy after having a nice hot water bath.

I tried this with my daughter and it worked.
Ofcourse she was a little younger than he is.

hello im S. i have an idea dont give him nuttin to eat or drink after 8 pm cuz when they eat and drink b4 bed that get hyper and tend to stay up all night and also there are some over the counter sleep meds for kids i have to use for my 15 year old or he would never sleep

C., maybe he not burning enough energy to go to sleep at bedtime. Maybe you could try to put him in a activity after-scholl and see if that helps....after all you gotta get your beauty rest too....

Try getting him up earlier in the morning. Sometimes it helps getting them into a new routine and to ensure he would be tired when he needed to go to bed.

I've personally had issues with sleep and dealt with children who have too. The best suggestion I can make is to give him benadryl for about 14 days. Start giving it to him at 12:30 the first night and let/make him stay up until then, then start moving the benadryl back by 30-60 minutes each night and the bedtime by the same. At the same time, create a structured bedtime routine. Play a game, have a bath, read some books, all in the same order each night. This should work for you.....it might help to do it 3 weeks and that last week adjust the benadryl down to 1/2. Good luck!

What time is he waking up in the am? How's his performance in school? (call his teachers) Is he on any type of medication for anything? Even if it says, "may cause drowsiness..." might be worth looking into, some people receive the opposite desired effect. And obviously...no caffeine right? There are mixed reports on the effects of sugar consumption. Does your home have a standard bedtime routine? (tv off, book is read, teeth are brushed, goodnight.) are there other kids in the home that are getting attention that your son might feel he needs to stay up that late just to be with you 1 on 1? Just some questions I have...I'm not there yet as a mom but from stuff I've read these are some ideas. Good luck!

Is he 8 1/2 yrs old or months?
It's been a long time since my 8 yr old has been a baby, but my friend just had a similar issue with her newborn sleeping thru the night. Her mom kept the baby up during the day = less naps and the baby slept thru the night.
If your son is 8 yrs old, i would suggest, like the others, a more structured schedule. When my daughter was younger, we had a schedule of dinner, bath, maybe a little tv, and reading a story. Sometimes i would snuggle with her for a little bit before i left her for the night (but that will be another habit to break eventually).
Good luck (sorry if the baby advice was not relevant). Stick with it. It takes a little one time to get used to a routine.
