Sick of Getting Sick!

How many moms out there stay healthy all or most of the time? If you do, please share your secrets with me! My 3 YO daughter goes to Pre-school 3 hrs/day & I work 6 hrs/week in a childcare setting, where there are germs circulating constantly. I do my best to wash hands frequently and keep wipes and hand sanitizer at the ready. We all take vitamins (with extra zinc in the winter months) and eat a fairly balanced diet. No matter what we do, it seems like everyone in our household gets sick at least once a month. I know it's good to be exposed to strengthen the immune system, but I'd like to go at least 1 whole month without a bug!

What can I do next?

I will be 45 on Sunday, hubby is 38, my kids are 16, 12 and 9. We have not had the flu in 20+ years and the kids have not thrown up since they were babies. We take this vitamin that is adult chewable so its digested quickly and it has minerals as well as probiotics added: http://www.GBGisIT.com The kids took a chewable gummy until just recently and now they all take an adult vitamin. None of us get the flu shot or immunizations. We rarely use hand sanitizer unless we leave a store like Goodwill. The kids have NEVER drank juice, only water and milk only for meals. They now have soda if we eat fast food, which is maybe 2-3x per month, but not at home. We are not crazy health food eaters either. Oh, and I have to say that up until 3 years ago, I worked full time so the kids were in a home daycare and then aftercare until then. In fact, my 12 yo had perfect attendance until end of 4th grade and those are the only 2 days she has missed. She's in 6th now. My son is in 3rd and has missed one day. I have terrible allergies and once a year it will turn into a sinus infection that I need to get an antibiotic for. The kids will get a head cold once a year, but don't even take anything for it. So, yes, there are lots of us who have good genes or something. I'm always shocked at how much my friends post on FB about how they are sick or their kids are sick, it seems like every other week. So I don't really have any advice unless you want to check out the vitamins, which we LOVE. good luck!

Sounds like you are doing some good things...it can be so frustrating to keep getting sick! One thing that made a MAJOR difference in our house is adding pro-biotics to the kids daily routine. Whole Foods sells an awesome chewable by Jarrow. We also don't vaccinate, and I strongly believe that has helped my kids keep stronger than average immune systems. My kids, 2 and 5, have gone through almost this whole school year with barely any illness!

My kids are older now, so we are hardly ever at the doctor. Years ago, I lessened their dairy intake (See http://www.notmilk.com/). That def helped.

Kids do get sick more often when they are in younger & in preschool.

I used to have my kids (and still do) wash their hands as soon as they get home---Especially after school or a trip to the grocery store.

Adequate sleep is important .

I open the windows in my house daily.

I take probiotics, too.

Eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as possible.

Is your house dusty or are you prone to allergies? That can attribute to sinus infections, which can lead to cold like symptoms. Use a nasal wash regularly, they also make nasal washes or sprays for children, even if you aren't sick. It'll wash out any possible allergens that can cause sneezing and coughing and runny noses.
