Hi my name is D.. I am here asking if anyone knows of a Suicide Survivors support group. In January of this year, my Uncle commited suicde. He was my father figure, because my dad, his brother died when I was very young. I was the legal next of kin, and had to do everything from identifying the body, to planning the funeral, and cleaning out his apartment. While I had family help, I think at this point I need to go to group support meetings, as I have yet to start the grieving process. If anyone knows of any groups i'd appreciate the info. Thanks.
D.

So What Happened?

Wow, the women here are so supportive. I thank everyone that responded. I have used the resources givin to me (as well as the words of help) and believe i am now on the path to go to a group. I thank all who have answered my call. It has been a very difficult 9 months, and i look forward to healing. Thank you again, for all of your support, understanding, and not judging my dear uncle.
With great appreciation,
D.

Dear D.,

You've already taken a really important step by asking for this info.

The best group I know of is AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). While they have prevention in their name and as a big part of their mission, they also have links on their website to support groups for those who are trying to cope with the aftermath of the suicide of a loved one.

http://www.afsp.org

Here's wishing you strength and support.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss--that's terrible and incredibly difficult. I'd check out information that NAMI might have (http://www.nami.org/). Also, there is a suicide hotline (1-800-SUICIDE) that likely has people who would have resources for you.

Hi D.,

I know what your going through. My father committed suicide about 10 years ago. I did go to a support group at my local church for a while which really helped. I looked up some information up for you and found this. I think your from Staten Island. The website is: http://www.afsp.org/
but I picked group that meets in or around your area. I hope the information is still current. Good luck, you're doing the right thing in attending a group. It really helps.

Let me know how you make out.

Hi D., I am so sorry for all you have had to go through at such a young age. A good place for you to start is by calling 1-800-lifenet. I can tell you that, as a psychologist, it is a repository of all sorts of good information on where to get help. I have phoned them myself for some of my patients who are bereaved, or need to begin AA meetings, etc. All sorts of resources there. If you need any additional help, please don't hesitate to email me directly. Good luck. You are on the right path.

Hello D.,
Wow! What a difficult time for you I am so sorry. The resources I was going to give you have already been listed from other supportive women giving advice. I would like to let you know that you are on the right path and it is 100% OK to grieve. 9+ months is a long time to be holding everything in you will feel so much better getting this process going something very good will come out of it for you.
Take care and blessings to you!
J.

Dear D., I am so sorry to hear of your loss and the responsibility his passing placed on your shoulders. I do not know of a support group but there may be information on the computer. You could also ask at a local church. I know they have grief counselling. I will pray for you. Grandma Mary
