I was recently under a cobra plan and it is about to expire and I need to find private health insurance for myself (only). Can someone give me some trustworthy advice about purchase of private insurance for myself -- what to look out for -- what to get. I am single mom that only works p/t and do not want to get the run-around for something I don't need etc. Your advice would be most appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi K., I'm an insurance agent in AZ. If you don't get any referrals on here, ask local friends and family who they use. Or lastly, search in your area for an "independent health insurance agent" and they will be able to find you the best coverage for the best price. Your home/auto agent may sell health also or know someone who can help. Good luck!

Since you are a single mom & part time worker, have you checked to see if you qualify for your state's health program?

We were uninsured for a while (COBRA is outrageously expensive) and when my son was going on a church ski trip, we got 3 months of a major medical plan. I was concerned about a major injury, and just wanted something temporary.

We just checked with our local home/auto carrier... they had an agent that sold individual health insurance. I think it maybe cost us $35 a month or so.... but it was a $5000 deductible, I think.....

Good luck! I know what it is like to not have insurance....

CareNow has a discount card. My husband used it while he was out of work. It is not insurance, but discounts at Care Now and certain pharmacies and hospitals.

Try medicaid. you may be able to buy into it. They have a program where even if you dont qualify for Medicaid, you can still purchase it for much less than private health insurance. If your child is on CHIPs, call them and ask about it. If you are shopping for insurance call a broker. They can run quotes with several companies for you and explain the pros and cons to you.
Another idea is to go to work for Dollar General. They offer employees medical and dental from the day they start work with no waiting period and you only have to work 20 hrs a week to get it. I think Starbucks has a similar policy.
