Hi Mamas,

My due date is less than two weeks away, and I haven't chosen a pediatrician yet. Any suggestions for a good doctor here in Alameda? Our insurance is Blue Cross, and pretty flexible.

What can I do next?

Hi!

Congrats! I just had a little boy two weeks ago and found his pediatrician about two weeks before he was born as well. I HIGHLY recommend Primary Pediatrics (http://ppmg.homestead.com/index.html). They take Blue Cross. Dr. Balstieri works out of the Alameda office and is awesome...but then everyone I've spoken to has been amazing. I know that their Castro Valley office has an open house once a month or so where new/expecting parents can go to meet the doctors and ask questions. I'm pretty sure the other office locations would do the same thing. I have a couple friends who also go to them...we all love them.

I wish you a happy, safe and wonderful birth!

Try Alameda Family Physcians on Central at Park st(right by the starbucks). They are family practioners there. I go to Dr Carper and just love him. He is both mine and my sons doctor. He is very nice and well answer all your question. I have never felt like anything i asked him was a stupid question or i was wasting his time. They have several other doctors there too so if you want a female doc. I have been to see every one there for one reason or another and been very happy with them all. Also when i need to get my son in the same day they always make it happen. Not alway with our doc but with someone. I really like knowing that i can get him in if he sick the same day.

Good luck in your search

Hi J.,

I would recommend Primary Pediatrics in Alameda. We bring our 11 month old son to see Dr. Jennifer Betz in that practice. She is really nice, down to earth and spends lots of time with you answering your questions. We also like the nurse practioner Georgianne Walker who is also a lactation consultant (super helpful for a new mom!)There are several doctors in the Alameda office and you can kind of shop around until you find one that you like. The doctors don't get offended. You might have to see one of the other doctors also if your doctor does not work the day you do a drop in.

The practice also has other offices in Oakland and Castro Valley. Between the three offices, there are 3 doctors who also happen to be the chiefs of pediatrics from the major hospitals around here, Alta Bates Summit, Eden in Castro Valley and also Oakland Children's Hospital.

Here is their website:

Good luck!

I can’t say enough about Primary Pediatrics on Park Street. My daughter was originally seeing Dr Saldivar who just returned from a hiatus (love her). We were also seeing Jen Wineman FNP. Jen has left this month to focus on her family, which I am very sad about. We have a great relationship with the office. Anne the advice nurse is great along with all the support staff. When my daughter was born 27 months old I called constantly and they were always nice and knew who I was. There is also a lactation specialist there that is hard to get into. My friend’s daughter sees Dr Balestreri and likes her a lot. They also have a Saturday clinic that you can drop by and see a doctor without making an appointment. The clinic rotates between the clinics in Alameda, Oakland, and Castro Valley. They have an advice nurse you can page until 11:30pm (free)then a service that will page a doctor after 11:30 pm ($35.00) but well worth it. The office used to have an information night for prospective patient families once a month where you can meet a doctor in the clinic and ask questions. That is how we found Primary Peds.

I have another friend that went to Alameda Pediatrics in the same building as Primary Peds. She likes them a lot.
