Seeking Hip Hop Dance Class for 6 Yr Old That Is Not Sleazy

My 6 yr old daughter has shown an interest in hip hop dancing and we would like to find a dance class for her to attend. I am concerned of just looking in the phone book or going to the closest dance center because I want to make sure that the dance class is teaching hip hop moves that are age appropriate. I have witnessed many groups of young students dancing provocatively and I don't want that experience for her. Does anyone know of a studio that has a policy against teaching provocative moves? We can go pretty much anywhere in the greater Indy area, live near McCordsville, frequently travel to Butler University area. Thanks.

What can I do next?

My daughter goes to Pink Slipper Dance Studio in Noblesville. There are 2 locations: one up towards Cicero and another right off of SR 37 in the new Hamilton County Sports Complex. She is too young currently for the hip-hop classes they teach, but I work with someone who used to teach the hip-hop class there and her daughter and son both currently take hip-hop there. Very clean and age appropriate. Website for the Pink Slipper is www.pinkslipperdancestudio.com. I'm not sure what age they start accepting children for hip-hop. Good luck!

I had the same concerns when I was looking. In addition, I had a difficult time finding a program that would take children younger than 8yrs old. We started last fall at Broad Ripple Park and I loved it. They do not have a competive team option to my knowledge, but it is a good way to get her started, at least while you're still looking around. They are just getting ready to begin another class on 3/18, and as of yesterday, still had some openings. Hope that helps!

Although they do not offer Hip Hop, Jordan Academy of Dance At Butler offers technical instruction dance including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Modern. I will only allow my now 10 year old to attend this school as it is strictly a technique/ classical approach as opposed to competition team dancing. I have noticed that some of the competition schools seem to have many of the showy type feels to them that I like to avoid. I am not judging this, but just saying I do not like competition dancing and many of the Hip Hop Classes are found in these schools. My daughter is thinking she would like to pursue ballet as a career after her 5 years of dance, so for us, Jordan is best. If you could settle on perhaps a jazz class at first maybe you would find she would enjoy it as well.

Call Patt Heath at ###-###-####.
She is the owner of Dance Arts Studio at 10th and Emerson.
Ask her if she can put you in touch with Vicki Gillaspy.
Either one of these ladies may be able to give you a referral to such a studio.
I know exactly what you are talking about.
