I had my first baby about six months ago, and for the last few months, my hair has been a wreck. Aside from major hair loss, it just doesn't seem very healthy. I know it's hormones, but if anyone has any suggestions on getting through this phase, I would appreciate it. My skin is a mess too, so again, any suggestions for products or anything that helps would be great!

Biotin works great for the hair. It comes in a capsule and you can find it at health food stores. As for the skin, stay away from fried foods, chips, sodas and chocolate. These foods are not good for the skin. I also take vitamin supplements for the skin. (Hair, Skin & Nails) Drink plenty of water. Sugar also causes hair loss in women as we get older.

Sincerely,

T.

Hi I am a hairdresser of 43 years so I hope I can give you advise. Have you tried conditioners? Over the counter items that are good are Pantene products. Use there shampoo and get the condition also. When you shampooo rinse it really well, then apply the conditioner, leaving it on as long as you can. Place a plastic cap over it to hold in the body warmth. Then rinse it thoroughly.. Do this everytime for about 4-5 times, then put it on and work it through and rinse. This should put you back in good shape. I shampoo in the shower and I shampoo first thing, apply conditioner and leave it on while I wash my body and rinse just before getting out. Good luck

Check with your Avon representative.... Avon has some Hair Care With In Gel capsules. One of my customers was so shocked when a doctor recommended for hair health, but she said after using it even her hair dresser noticed a difference. I can't tell much with my hair because it is so thick..but I really notice a difference with my nails when I take it on a regular basis.

For your face there are different products that Avon has that can help you with skin problems.. Would depend on how your skin is reacting...dryer, oilier, blotchy...etc...

My baby is 8 in a half and around 5 or six months after having my baby i went through the same thing i had patches
of hair missing in the back of my head but it all grew back at around this time when she turned 8 mths. Your body don't really get back to itself itself until 8 or 9months it really depend on you. I have been taking the prenatal vitamins and eating right. Just continue to feed your body and taking your vitamins and you should be ok. Try not to put to much on your face stay with one product also what cleared my face up is my birth control.

HI
I had my guy 7 months ago and my hair is falling out too... not sure what to do about that. My skin is a mess as well I have never had break outs and now I am getting them (I am a Aesthetician). I use Image Skin Care - Medicated Acne Masque as a spot treatment and the Salicylic Gel Cleanser. Works great but my skin is still not perfect but the product definitely helps manage it!!! basically use anything with Salicylic in it. Salicylic kills the bacteria. Clinique makes a #2 toner with Salicylic Acid in it and it works good too.
Hope that helps!

You might get your thyroid checked...those are both symptoms of thyroid issues...it's a simple blood test and simple treatment of taking a pill each day. Very much worth it too!

if your hair is long, cut it right away... i didn't know to do this until so much had already fallen out...shorter is better during this phase and just know it will grow back... mine came back finally and now I have "bangs" which are really just the new growth :)

Yes! You are right. It's hormones (most probably). I am a big proponent of bio identical hormones because there is no risk of cancer or really bad side effects.
I specialize in bio-identical hormone replacement. There are a few places around Austin, but I don't know where you are located. My experience has shown me that the best results have come from Natural Bio Health in Lakeway. Their approach is less about doctor's ego and more about tried and true results. I've been there and I can vouch for it personally. You'll have a consult, be sent for a blood test, and can begin a program that will likely have you jumping up and down for joy in about 30-60 days. Truly!
Good luck. It really should be an easy fix.
By the way...I am finding many of the problems moms are facing on this site have to do with hormones. Unfortunately, most OB/GYN's have limited knowledge and experience in this and they are prompted by the drug companies. I encourage ALL women who are 35 (yes, you can start younger) to go to a bio-identical hormone replacement office (and I can only vouch for the one I mentioned above since I haven't experienced all of them) and have your hormone levels tested. It's easy and necessary. At some point in your life, you will probably need or want to have hormones. They make you live longer as well as treat and CURE MANY problems...some you weren't even aware you had. The younger you are when you get a baseline, the better you can see the decline as you get older.

Hi C. I would call your dr and have your Thyroid checked! Those symptoms are signs of Low-Thyroid and it is common that after pregnancy some women go into a (sometimes temporary) hypo-thyroid condition. I personally had that happen after my daughter was born and it has remained there even after my son (who is now 1). IF you need a good dr. who actually takes that seriously call mine: Dr. Wade Huey (or his wife Rebecca Crowley Huey): ###-###-#### .

Also, you may want to check out your diet as well ensure you are getting enough fatty acids (found in fish, eggs etc..) as well as antioxidants. Check out www.woodlandsnutrition.com

I know this is so hard. I have an 18 month old, and my hair was actually fine until I stopped breast feeding her at around 11 months old. Then, lots (I would say a good 1/10) of my hair fell out, especially around my crown. I didn't notice at first until it started coming back in, and I had all these 2 inch hair sticking up all over my head.

My hair stylist has been awesome. Once the hair got a little longer, it actually gives me a little body once I learned to dry it with a round, ceramic round brush.

Also, my hair is slightly wavy but, now is kind of frizzy and never looks like it lays nice. Not just the new short hair, but all of my hair. The product which made a huge difference for that, was $18 and they sell it at Orbit Salon in Austin, where my stylist works. It's called AG Liquid Varnish Smoothing Polish. You put a dab on and smooth it through all of your ends and a little higher up when your hair is towel dried. It doesn't leave any residue but, just makes your hair have that shiny, soft look when styling.

Hope this helps!

My skin never returned to it's pre-pregnancy self. It is much drier than it ever was. I've found that the only lotion that helps is the Gold Bond lotions. I apply it after i get out of the shower and it traps in the moisture. Also, don't take really hot baths / showers, they only dry your skin out more.

As for your hair, have you tried the Nioxin products? We use them and love them. I have naturally fine and thin hair and this is the only product I've found to work for me. Although, I'm interested in trying the oils that were recommended.

Good luck!

I definitely remember going through that hair loss phase, and looking and feeling horrible about my appearence. It almost started looking like I had a widows peak (which I don't) because I was loosing my hair just above each of my temples. Anyway, a dear neighbor of mine recommended some vitamins by the name of Hair, Skin & Nails by Nature's Bounty, you can get them at any Walgreens, I think Walmart carries them too. They did help me start growing my hair back. My midwife also told me to keep taking my prenatal vitamins until I finished them all. Plus, I made it a point to increase my intake of foods high in protein like cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese and eggs. I guess I did a combination of things, but it all seemed to help. I hope this helps you somehow. Good luck!

Hey girl, it'll be fine! The same thing happened to me. I have TONS of hair so my stylist and colorist were laughing at me, and didn't believe me, and thought I was being hormonal. Then all the hair started growing back in and they couldn't deny it. It's all hormones. Give it time. Your body will never be the same, but your hair WILL grow back.

hey C., my name is jay. isn't the hair loss such an insult! oh well, atleast we have cute little babies..;) but you may want to check with the doctor, get a blood test to make sure you don't have hypothyroidism...it's common after a pregnancy (i was diagnosed with it) and it accounts for the extreme hair loss, fatigue, dry skin etc. just check and make sure it's not that because if it is, you want to get it treated (which is easy, by the way, you just take some thyroxine hormone everyday...i'm feeling SO MUCH BETTER after having been checked out and diagnosed! and...the water finally drains from my bathtub now since it's not clogged with hair! good luck!

Have your blood checked for thyroid disease. Your thyroid messes with your hormones but it also dries out your hair and skin. It can mess with your emotions as well. I can only use a skin and hair care made by a home based business called beauti control It was the only skin care that would help me and I tried everything. I sell it now cause I get it cheaper that way but definitely talk to your doctor about your thyroid. My add is on this website under spa and skin care.

** I'm adding an edit here after reading the responses. Definitely get your thyroid checked FIRST. I messed around with conditioners, vitamins, skin creams, etc for months. Nothing will really help if you don't identify the base problem. They can be good ADD-ON treatments later. I thought it would be best to try and take care of this, non-medically myself and then go to the doctor. It was just a bunch of wasted time. See your doctor asap! ***

Sound like your thyroid - it's very common to get screwy during and after pregnancy. You thyroid regulates your metabolism with a hormone. It's not just about weight, but about how your body actually works. It's a very easy blood test to see if you need to take replacement thyroid hormone to fix your metabolism. I just got diagnosed, had out of the blue skin and hair craziness too. Now I take synthroid (just one of the options) and the difference is night and day. There are also diet changes you can make. I recommend the "Hypothyroid Sourcebook" for more info.

I just had my second baby and my skin looks like I'm 14 again. My hair hasn't really taken a nose dive yet though. For your hair take wheat germ oil capsules. You can get them at wal-mart or a health food store. They completely stop hair loss and start to replace the nutrients. It's cheap, easy, and natural! As for your skin, Clearisil face wash works really well for break outs. Also, remember to drink a TON of water. Your body is using SO much more water to produce milk that it might not have enough for the normal functions of your other organs, and the work of cleaning out toxins which will can make you prone to more break outs, so DRINK MORE WATER. Just get a bottle and every time you pass a faucet, fill it up! I hope this is helpful!
