Help!! I haven't had to plan a bachelorette party or wedding shower in years and I'm a little out of the loop. My sister-in-law is getting married in a few months and her maid of honor lives out of state so I feel obligated to host a bachelorette party and wedding shower for her. My whole family is in the wedding so I am looking for some nice but inexpensive ideas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

My sister got married two years ago and I had the task of planning the shower & bachlorette party. I agree that you need to get the bridal party involved. We incorporated the interests of the bride & groom. We had the bridal shower at their home (logistically this worked the best). It was a travel theme. I made invitations on the backs of postcards. I got postcards from everywhere - I had everyone I know send them to me. Traveling is definitely something they love so it was easy to put together ideas to tie into the party. PM me if you are interested in what we did for games, food, etc.

For the bachlorette party, one of the bridesmaids found a place in Chicago called the Wooden Spoon. We had a cooking class. Everyone paid their own way and a little for the bride - basically the cost of a good meal. They did a great job planning a meal for us and everyone got a chance to help out with the meal. Appetizer, main course and dessert. It was a great way to have fun without bar hopping.

Other ideas we had for the b-party: there is a place in Chicago (on Lincoln I think?) where you can make your own perfume. They keep it on file. You can have a private party there and the bride can make her own special scent for her wedding day.

If you have someone's home available you can have a pampering b-party - manicures, pedicures, massages in their home. Look on the web - you should be able to find listings for people who will come to your home. Depending on the size of the crowd, this is fun too.

Good luck & have fun!!

Wedding shower - have the whole bridal party pitch in for the wedding shower. I'm not sure where you live, but a country club in Glenview (the Glen) is beautiful & has really reasonable lunches (I think starting around $20). Same with Fountain Blue on Mannheim. Great prices, nice banquet hall. Trust me, if you want to do it at home, the cost will almost come out the same for food, drinks, decorations, invitations, etc. This way, you save time and clean up.
Bach Party - I hear the 80's Prom is good but tickets are pricey. A comedy show or wine tasting (have everyone bring a bottle of wine and cheese. Good luck :)

For your bachelorette party, I have 2 ideas, that I am fond of. Getting cheap tickets for Las Vegas, either for a night, or for 2days, and 1 night, is alot of fun, and cheaper than you think. My second idea is what I used for my sister's party, and also, I used it for my friend. Get a private dance lesson, like line dancing. Have a Margarita Party, with karaoke, and a dance lesson. Good Luck with Everything.

Hi L.,
The best bachelorette party I've been to was a concert. Do a search on Ticketmaster of any recent and upcoming concerts, then ask the Bride which one she would prefer to attend. Have everyone buy their own cheap seat (but chip in for the bride's ticket) and then just plan a pre-party at a place prior to the concert. We also rented a limo, and bought feather boas to wear out as a collective group at the concert. We had a blast! (FYI..it was Motely Crue..a throw back to our 80's days).

For my sister's wedding I did the bachlorette party at GameWerks in Schaumburg. It was a lot of fun, and not too expensive I didn't think. For her bridal shower, I just did a daisy theme and had it at my house.

I have 2 friends that both did their bachelorette parties at a pottery painting studio, instead of the traditional route of going out on the town to party or a stripper. There are several in the suburbs, depending on where you live, and they are a lot of fun. Especially as we're coming upon the holidays, they have designs for Halloween and Christmas. You can choose from a variety of items to paint and they offer prices within everyone's budget. The pottery is already done, and then you paint and design it however you wish. They are accustomed to hosting parties, and we each brought an appetizer or dessert and beverage. This is a great alternative if you have family joining you, as it's a way to get all the ladies together without anyone feeling offended or uncomfortable in the party/stripper type of atmosphere, if that's what you are looking for. A lot depends on the bride and what she likes.

Wedding shower - it all depends on how many you have. If a lot of people, try a banquet hall or restaurant (even Olive Garden has private rooms and most people like their food). If under 20 people, you could do a simple one at home. I did one at my house for my best friend, all the bridesmaids's provided a dish and it was much less expensive than renting out a restaurant or banquet hall. The bride loved it. We decorated it beautifully with flowers and such (try Phillips 2 dozen rose specials or many other places offer Friday specials). Good luck!

I don't know where you live, but St. Charles Pheasant Run Resort has a Zanies comedy club in the premisis (sp?). It;s about $16/person, have to buy 2 drinks, and there are usually 3-4 acts, and sometimes a really good headliner. They have a website www.zanies.com Also, St. Charles is a really fun town with a lot of cute pubs to eat and get festive at:) Also, you can stay at the Pheasant Run, they have reasonable rooms and also a Mario tricoci spa on site. Lots to do there and pretty reasonable. For something totally FUN and kind of naighty(!) you could host a "Panty Party" which is a home party with adult-themed accesories and fun...I'm not sure how well you know your sis-to-be, but she might get a kick out of something like that. I don't know anyone personally who does it, but I am sure you can google it.
Good Luck

Hi L.. I just had the honor of planning a shower and a b-party and this is what we did. For the shower we had a luncheon at Maggiano's in Oak Brook. It was DECLICIOUS! It is a bit pricey, but if you have several people chipping in, it is not too bad. Also, I am not sure where you live, but my matron of honor had my wedding shower at Heritage Bluff Golf Course in Channahon, Il. It was perfect...simple shower food, a perfect room and they just got done remodeling. It is between $7-$10 per person...not too bad!

For the bachelorette party we got a room at a hotel around downtown Naperville, had a pre-party there with drinks, simple snacks, presents, etc. then we went bar hopping around downtown Naperville had dinner at Mongolian BBQ and we had such a fun time! We met two other bachelor parties out and we had fun with them!!

Good luck! I hope you have fun planning!!

I think planning both depends on the interest of the bride. Is she interested in the full blown crazy bachelorette party or something more subdued? I was never interested in having strangers eat life savers off my shirt or drinking out of straws shaped like the male anatomy, so for my bachelorette party we went to one of the many design your own jewelry places and everyone paid for their own jewelry that they made (I made the jewelry that I wore to my rehearsal dinner) and then we all went to a pizza place and played a couple of fun games and ate and drank. However I have been to some of the more "traditional" bachelorette parties where the hosts went to Lovers Lane and bought a bunch of stuff and we went to Howl at the Moon after playing some games, embarrasing the bride-to-be, etc.

For the shower, you can have one very inexpensively if you can find a home to host it in and you (and hopefully some others in the wedding party) don't mind doing the prep work. There are also plenty of places that could cater the party if you aren't interested in doing it yourself although at that point you can probably find a venue where you can host it for the cost of the food/drink. Again some of it depends on the brides personality.

Have fun!

Lets see....My bachelorette party was Saturday and Sunday and family and friends got to choose what they wanted to go to. Saturday night we went to dinner for mexican and then went to the hotel bar befre heading to the baton lounge. We had front row seats and it was a blast. Then the next day we went to a sox game and had a beatiful day. I cant even remember if they won or not!

I had two showers both at peoples homes. The first one was a fiesta with Sangria and fajitas my favorites!! The other was a Jimmy Buffet luncheon themed party. I loved that it was different. Not stuffy (I have grown up with parents belonging to two country clubs) I just wanted something laid back. They were both incredible and wonderful. I'm not big on the games and everyne always complains when they have to do them.

We went to the Baton club for my bachlorette party since my now husband said no strippers we went bar hopping after the show. It was a lot of fun and we got a suite in one of the hotels downtown that had a little kitchen in it so we could save on money and bring in dinner. Everyone said it was the best bachlorette party that they had been to.

I was also in a wedding were we all wore our ugliest brides maids dress out that evening to the bars and the uglist one one won a prize. There was like 20 of us girls so it was pretty funny! Good luck

How about having something at your house and everyone can bring a dish to pass or a bottle of wine you can have a jewelry or tupperware party and your sister-in-law can have a wish list for gifts.
