Period Return After Childbirth

So first off, I will be calling my doctor tomorrow, but I wanted to see if you mamas had any "been there done that" stories.

I am 38 years old and my son is going to be six months next week. Anyone experience going this long with no period, after childbirth? I'm wondering if my pregnancy kick-started pre-menopause or something weird like that. Not that I'm complaining (really), but it's been on my mind. I know "normally" I would have gotten it by now. As long as there's nothing wrong it's fine, but I just know normally I'd have started it by now.

Thanks JC, I forgot to mention I nursed for about 8 weeks and then stopped. So 2 months nursing, 4 months since then.

What can I do next?

I was well past the 6 month mark. I don't think you have to worry that pregnancy jump-started menopause! It's just so individual. What do you mean by "normally"? That you started earlier after prior children?

What are you using for birth control? Anything that has an effect on hormones?

When you start your period again is different for each person. Startin depends on your hormone levels. Hormone levels are influenced by other parts of your body.

The wife of a coworker gave birth to her S. 9 months after the first. If you're not religiously using a proven birth control pill, you could be pregnant. Even then it's possible. Good to be seeing your doctor.

With my 1st I got my period 15 months later when I stopped nursing. With my 2nd it was a little longer and it started again when I was still nursing. With both I was taking the mini-pill.

Have you been using birth control? If not, you might want to do a pregnancy test. I have a couple of friends who have "Irish twins"--babies less than a year a part.

Why not take a home pregnancy test, just in case?

i went on the mini pill, and when done weaning i went on loestrin and truthfully i don't think i ever had a "real" period since before having a baby. i have had mild spotting but no real "i need a tampon" kind of bleeding. my dr knows and isn't concerned. says its the pill.

after my oldest son was born, I went a year without a period. But then for me? That was nothing new. If I wasn't on birth control? I didn't have a regular cycle. EVER.

I also breast fed him until he was 2.5 and then his brother was born about 3 months later.

You're 38. You might be hitting perio-menopause. Not sure. Your doctor will most likely do a blood test to see where your hormones are. It's possible they are still out of whack.

Mine returned each time when I weaned my babies (right after). I was also on the mini pill while I nursed.

Definitely talk to your doctor, since they can give you the best info. You could have a hormonal imbalance. But this is probably totally normal. Everybody is different, and restarts at different times. I think it was somewhere around 11 months for me after my baby was born. I was nursing, though. But it returned before I stopped nursing, so it wasn't entirely dependent on that.

After my first I got it at 4 months pp and breastfed until he was 13 months old. My S. just turned 1 and I am still nursing, on the mini pill and have not gotten it yet.
