Pay to Gate-check Stroller and Carseat?

Hello! I'm flying with my infant and 2 year-old before Christmas. I have a carseat and stroller combo (for the infant) that I was hoping to check at the gate. Does anyone know if I'll have to pay baggage charges for those? I'm flying on American if it makes a difference. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Never had to pay to gate check stroller/car seat. Flown with airtran and delta. Also keep in mind that you can have two carry on pieces of luggage. One suitcase, 19 in. or smaller and one "personal" item: purse, laptop bag, backpack. A diaper bag does not count, is not included in the carry-ons. So that is a total of three bags you can take onto the plane, but remember that is not easy to carry with a baby. So in a way baby can have a bag too. It is a lot to carry but if you want to avoid the charges for checked luggage then load up on carry-ons.

I just flew in May and here is what Continental said they would do. You can check a stroller or carseat for free. You can carry the baby in the carseat up to the terminal. There they can tell you if there's a free seat that you and your child can have (one for you and one for the car seat). It's nice when they do! If not you can check the car seat at the gate.

I've never paid to check a stroller or a carseat. I think it's free for most airlines (I know it is for American). Go to their website and read about traveling with children. It will give you all their policies about all that. I've also taken sippy cups and bottle before. The first couple times they didn't even check them (just sent them through the x-ray machine), but the last time they just put a strip of paper in the juice to make sure it really was just juice (it only took about 30 seconds). You just need to tell them at security if you do have them. I've traveled several times with my now 2.5 y/o and they've always been very helpful and very nice!

I've flown bunches of times on lots of different airlines, and all have always let me gate-check the stroller and carseat for free. I've also checked the carseat at check-in, with our other checked luggage, and it's free there, too. United let me check the pack n play for free as well. I've always found all of the airlines to be quite humane, and even extra accommodating, about flying with an infant (with the exception of one young male flight attendant one time, but that was clearly his problem!) GL!

I fly all the time, show up early and let the front counter know that you are gate checking the stroller. They will put a tag on it and take it from you at the door to the jet.

we just flew Continental - we carried the booster seat on the plane and put in the overhead bin - on one flight she could use it, one flight they said it wasn't FAA apporved- we needed it in the rental car. We gate checked it on the smaller flight. There was no charge.
