Packing a Lunch in Pittsburgh

This may seem like a silly question, but this year I want to start packing my childrens' lunches; One is 11, the other is 9. I want to pack healthy yet fun things for them to eat and drink, not not spend a fortune doing it. Any advice and/or tips on this would be wonderfully helpful :)

I pack my daugther's lunch most days because she eats very little meat, most of the school lunches contain meat. Also, the school lunches are not very healthy. Some of the things I pack that she likes are:

1. Sandwiches - She likes PB&J, Cream Cheese & preserves and cheese sandwiches. I actually make a loaf worth at a time and freeze them. I take them out in the morning, put them in her bag and by lunch time they are defrosted. We use rye or whole wheat bread.

2. I have a soup thermos that I put soups and left overs from dinner in. I heat them in the morning, put them in the thermos and they are still warm at lunch time. She loves this especially in the winter.

3. She LOVES slices of cheese or peanut butter that she can put on crackers.

4. If you have an apple slicer, when you push it down, take the core out and hold the rest of the apple together as you take it out of the slicer. You will have a hole in the center you can put peanut butter in.

5. A container of yogurt with cereal to put in it or have on the side.

6. I always pack her fruit which I put in a container to keep it fresh. I have found that bananas do not keep well in a lunch box.

7. When the go-gurts are on sale, I buy several packs and freeze them. They are melted by lunchtime. My kids will even eat them frozen at home.

8. I only pack water to drink. If she spills some on herself, it doesn't really matter.

Whenever I pack something different, I ask her what she liked or didn't like so that I know if I should do it again. Also, it took a few weeks to get the amount down. She leaves whatever she doesn't eat in her bag so I know if I packed too much.
Good luck.

Hi ( :
Just got ready for the school year myself and got some bad news about the vinyl lunchbags I purchased. They may contain lead. Links above for info and a site to purchase non lead or non vinyl bags. They say that even if they say lead safe, there can still be lead in them! Geez, have to go and return them at toys r us now!

some basic ideas....
A fruit choice, a vegetable choice, a dairy choice (yogurt, cheese, yogurt drink, or a squirt bottle of milk), a sandwich, bagel, wrap or roll up (pbj, hummus, cream cheese, turkey), and a snack (nuts, egg, dry cereal or crackers). Maybe get a small thermos for soup, mac n cheese or pasta. A small reuseable ice pak for chilled foods. Here is a website for more ideas and recipes!!

This is such a great question. I too am having the same dilemma. My oldest son is 8 and weighs 90 lbs, while my youngest is 6 and weighs 70 lbs. Until recently, I did not care what went into my mouth or theirs and then I woke up. I am hoping packing their lunches vs. letting them buy lunch at school will help me control what they eat and make sure it is healthy stuff. The only problem is that they are picky eaters.

Help!!!

Make sure you pack a fruit every day. Sandwich wraps are great and even salads. I do a few leftovers here and there too. This timeof year is great for fresh fruit, but canned it good if you get the no sugar added. A lot of tiem you can buy fruit cups at Dollar general for much cheaper than Giant Eagle..Shop N save... Also try Sam's club or Costco. Homemade Jello with fruit added...frozen yogurt is good...it thaws by lunchtime.....Celery sticks with peanut butter or cream cheese and rasins (ants on a log)..... cheese sticks...just mix it up to keep them interested
