I recently missed a period..completely. My husband and I are on ther verge of TTC but we are still currently "on the pill". I took a preg. test and it came back negative. I decided to continue taking this months pills since the test came back negative, but have an uneasy feeling about it. I have never, in my 8 years on the pill, missed a period, so I have no prior experience with this. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal? Any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!

I had never missed a period until I was pregnant. I thought I was pregnant but I had a doctor do a pap and take blood. Which came back negative. Otc test were negative as well I was 8 weeks pregnant before I got a positive test to show.
With my second son it didn't take as long however I took a test when my period should have been and it still was negative. Some women have low doses of hormones at first so they don't show up on the test. Just listen to your body.

I would not take a chance and go off the pill. You are already planning on starting a family soon anyway, so why take the chance. I had 3 false negatives. Listen to what your body is telling you. You are uneasy. Use a condom for a few months. It is not as nice but it works and not so bad once you get used to the difference. Especially if it only for a short time. I did not drink and did everything perfect with my first child and she is smart and does great in school. With my second child, I had 2 false negative EPT's. I did not drink a lot but had one night I regret. I would never have had even one drink if I had known. But my daughter has very mild dysgrafia and trouble with sequencing and organizing. Is it related? I will never know. But I feel guilty, even now. But I didn't know I was pregnant. I have low hormone levels naturally, so the tests did not show positive right away. Be safe, get a blood test with your doctor.

M.,
I was wondering is this the only one missed?Have you had any other problems? Like having your period more than once in a month or last too long?I don't want to scare you but if you have had these kind of problems;you might need to check for cysts.I had the same problems and when I finally did get pregant almost lost my son.At 32yrs. old they finally found I had cancer of my uteris and ovarian cyst.I had a hysterctomy they took everything out.I PRAY THAT THATS NOT THE CASE WITH YOU.

BC is highly effective; however the typical failure rate of the pill is 5%. The only way to be 100% sure if your pregnant or not, is a blood test. Please call your OBGYN.

My first pregnancy I missed a period and took a test and it came back negative not once, not twice, but about 6 times before it barely was a faint line! My hormone levels were just very low so the home test were not very accurate. I finally had a blood test done and indeed I was pregnant. I would go to the doctor to be certain.

This happened to me...and I was pregnant. But I had a "feeling" breasts were tender and I didn't feel like myself. I did the three pack of EPT. I asked my doctor and he said to go ahead and keep taking BC until I saw for sure if I was pregnant or not...so I did. On the third and final test, I saw a faint double line. I was pregnant...I stopped taking the bc pills and my son turned out perfect. It's not so much in the first 3 months that you have to worry about as much as you do from month 3 to end. Thought I'd share.

Since you have never missed a period on the pill I think I would make an appt. with your ob/gyn and have a blood test done. Taking the pill if pregnant is not something you want to gamble with. EPT tests are not always accurate. I had a friend who had periods the ENTIRE time she was pregnant.

Blessings to you as you start your family!

If you read the instruction manual that came with the pills, and the preg test, it will tell you that being on BC pills will cause false negatives. Please follow that gut feeling, stop the pill, and if you are like me, you will be blessed with the best thing God created!
This sounds so much like my story when I was pregnant 9 years ago, it is scary! Good Luck, stop the pill, wait three days, re-test, or better yet call the doctor, get a blood test!

I would trust your gut instinct. Stop taking the pill until you know for sure. It is not good to be on the pill and pregnant. I have know at least 4 people that have conceived on the pill. Best wishes in starting your family.

I had this happen to me two months ago. I have been on Loestrin 24 for six months when I took the placebo pills and waited. No period. I, too, took a test and it came back negative, but I called my doctor anyway to make sure it was okay to do this and take the normal pills. She said that it is not uncommon for this to happen while on a low-dose of estrogen BC. Sometimes there's not enough build up to have a period. The same thing happened to me the next month. I called again to make sure after I had taken a test and gotten a negative result. She said, "Honey, why are you worrying about this? Enjoy it!" If you've been regular with taking pills and have no room for error, I'd say that is probably what happened to you, too. When my husband and I were trying for our first child, I took a test on Monday and it was negative. I took on on Thursday of the same week, and there was a faint line. If you have any doubts and think that you might be pregnant, I'd urge you to test again and call your doctor. Good luck!

I would say go to your doctor to get another test done, and maybe a blood test. However, yes, I did experience the same thing as you did after being on the pill for years. May be normal, but wouldn't hurt to go to your gyno to double check. Have you done more than one test?

Hi M.!
I would call your doctor. I took 4 pregnancy tests at home and they all came back negative. I finally went to my doctor when I came down with flu like symptoms and they did a blood test that came back positive. My hcg hormone was too low for it to be picked up on a home pregnancy test. I had even gone to a Planned Parenthood and had them do the test and nothing. It is still posible so I would go see your doctor.

My understanding is that due to the high levels of estrogen in the pill, pregnancy tests often come up negative in the first months when you are, in fact, prego. And I had 2 negative prego tests and wasn't on the pill. Don't quote me but your best bet is to call your OBGYN.

M., How many at home pregnancy tests did you do and when? Just to be sure and for piece of mind, you can call your OB/GYN and tell them you'd like to do a pregnancy test. I do know someone who had a negative at home pregnancy test but was positive when she did the blood test at her physician's office.

Hi M.,
If your still not sure, just take another EPT test, Or call your OBGYN. I have 4 kids and with my last preganacy I took 4 tests just to make sure it was positive, because I didn't believe it, and all 4 were positive.
Most test are pretty accurate, they have something in them that detects the HCG levels in your urine, to verify a positive result.
Good Luck!

well were you on an antibiotic lately? if so that could have affected your BC... i was off the pill and didn't have a period for 3 months, took 9 tests over a period of 2 months and finally the last one i took came back positive, the ones before were all negative! i even went to the dr. and they did a blood test and it came back negative!!! then my nipples were SSSOOO itchy i wanted to scratch them off so that is when i took the last one and it was positive! so it is posibble to have false negatives, maybe wait a while and take another, in the morning is supposed to be best.... hope this helps, good luck!

It shouldn't be a problem. My doctor told me recently that it can take up to 4 months for the pill to get out of your system. I would call just in case. If the test is negative you probably aren't pregnant, but I would make sure its not something else.

If you are doubtful about the pregnancy test, I do recommend seeing your doctor for a blood test or exam.

I took bc that caused me to miss my period for months at a time. The times I did have my period, it was very light. My doctor said this was fine, that is just how my body reacted to the pill. I did have a period for the first few months I was on this particular bc, and then they just stopped.

I took Loestrin 28.

Hi, M.!

Actually, this happened to me twice. The first time, after about 6 years on the pill, my doctor said that it was not unusual for it to happen. It has to do with the hormones on the pill.

Obviously, my suggestion is to check with your doctor, but I don't think it is anything to worry about!

M., It can be caused by stress or by worrying about not getting pregnant. The pill normally keeps you normal so I would stop the pill and have a test done by you dr or your local christian organization like sound options... You ept might be bad or you may have done something wrong.....

I was tested by a doctor several times at one time in my life after my first child and was told I was not pregnant -- when I knew I was and I was correct. so best to be safe and not take the pill especially since you want to start your family this year and God's timing is not our own.

I am 49. I started doing the same thing about 35 years of age. Had been on BC since 19 years of age. I asked the dr., we thought maybe earlt menapause. NO! To many years of BC was drying up the blood in my uterus. It took about 8 months to get my cycle even remotely normal. It has been about 1 1/2 years now and it still isn't completely right. I completely quit the BC. I tried the patch for about 2 months -- didn't like it. But I have problems with varicose veins that was caused by the BC pills.

Are you on generic BC pills? This recently happened to me too- so at my last yearly appointment I asked the doctor and he said that they are finding many women who have this issue on generic pills. I didn't think there was any difference on generic and I have taken them for years- but started missing one period, have a period, miss one, miss another, have a period- doctor switched my pills and no problems since.

If you need peace of mind stop the pills for this cycle and just use alternative birth control. Best way to make sure is to go to your doctor and get a blood test. You know your body and obviously it is trying to tell you something. IF you are pregnant those BCP can be harmful (but dont worry because many of healthy babies come from moms who didnt know they were pregnant and took them that month). Good luck!

It happened to me also. It was about 2 months after I got married and it was not when I was really planning to be pregnant. It was a weird feeling. It wouldn't have been bad to be pregnant, but it just wasn't according to my plan. I took the test and called my doctor. I believe that they said that the home tests are pretty accurate and that it can happen. It was a long time ago and I am no expert, so I would call your doctor just to be sure (or take a 2nd test in a few days). Good luck.
