Hello ladies! I am in need of some help. I have an associates degree in business management. I have worked the past 10 + years in the accounting field. I would really like to find a new career but I have no clue how to go about it. I really want to help people. I want to make a difference. I don't want to sit in an office all day and in 20 years realize that I've not made a difference. I am not sure what I can do with my current degree. I do not want to go back to school but I would take a class or 2 if that would help. I really need some guidance!

What can I do next?

How about you go and speak to a local school's guidance counselor? I know you don't want to go back to school, but many community colleges offer a class here and there for people in your situation, and they can take your skills and your desires to help people and think of ways to find something that fits.

You could always go and work for a non-profit or something like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, MRC (Medical Reserve Corps), CASA (court appointed special advocates for children) or something along those lines.

Good luck!

Check out your local community college and see if there are courses that interest you. Once you are a student, even with 1 online class, you usually qualify to be able to use the student resources (i.e. career counseling center, etc.) Just that, alone, is worth the cost of a class!

If you like accounting, but just want to make a difference, try volunteering your skills and oversight on a local non-profit board or volunteering your time.
OR look for a company whose whole mission is to make a difference, every day. You may not be paid well, but you will make an impact, even if behind the scenes.
If you truly want a new career not in accounting, more education or training may be necessary. Try a local firm like RightManagement (they help with job tranistioning) they offer different tools and tests to help you see where you should go based on likes/dislikes, (those tests we did in high school).
Can I just make one more push for non-profit and volunteer work. :) I work at a non-profit and almost always have and never feel like my day was spent in vain!

without going back to school i think it'd be hard to get a completely new career going...perhaps just do accounting at a non-profit you care about? or be an office manager at a non-profit?
