My son is 8 months old also, and was also born 4 weeks early. He is sitting on his own now, but is not crawling yet. As I know the doctors have told you, since they were born a month early sometimes they are a month behind in certain areas. I have noticed that my son does seem to be behind on some of the "physical" stuff. I didn't think he was ever going to roll over! My doctor has told me not to worry about this, and that by the time he gets to be 12-18 months he should be completely caught up, and you will never know he was born early. Try not to worry, and know that he will catch up eventually! Hope this helps!

Hi H., my daughter (now 4) was born 4&1/2 weeks early and was slower doing everything physical. She didn't sit up unassisted until 9 or 10 months. She didn't crawl until nearly 11 months, and walking was at least two months behind that. My little boy (9 months tomorrow) was born just 4 days early, and he has done everything at least a month or two before his sister did. He is already crawling and pulling up on everything. My point is each child is different, and do things at their own pace, and the fact that he was early probably has something to do with it. keep working with him, and if you get to concerned, just call his pediatrician and talk it over with him/her. Good Luck!!!

H.,
If he was 4wks early, he may be almost 9mos old from birth, but physically he is still a month behind. Boys tend to be a little slower sometimes. I had 2 boys, the 1st one did not start crawling until late in his 9th month and didn't start pulling himself up to stand until 14mos and he was born 3 wks late after induction. My 2nd son was born on time and he did not crawl until late in the 8th month. If you are concerned you should check with your pediatrician. But I have seen and heard of many who are just a little behind, especially boys.

I would ask your ped when you take him for his check up. It can't hurt to find out if it is something you should worry about. Of course, he could just be like my little girl and be stubborn.

hi H. my name is V. my middle child did the same thing when he wouldn't sit up crawle roll over are anything else by 8 months i freaked out the doc. said he was just lazy to go home hold him up with pillows on the floor do that for a week if he is not sitting up by himself in a week bring him back.don't worry about crawleing alot including my middle child skiped crawling and at a year started walking.he was two weeks late so i don't think being early has anything to do with it.and my baby was three weeks early and she can roll over trying to sit up and can say mamma.

Hi~ My sister had a 34 wk premmie that started off at 4Ibs13ozs he now is 9 months, although he is soooo cubby right now he has problems with low muscle tone such as sitting up, crawling, getting from his belly to sitting up and so forth. When they went for the 6 month check up the doctor noticed this and sent him to physical therapy. Now he is sitting up. He also has a speech problem, he doent babble or may mama or dada. So now they are sending her to speech therapy. I hope this doesnt scare you, I thought it might help. If you are concerned definatly talk to his doctor. If need be get a second opinion. Good luck~C.

I would give him a little more time. I would also mention it to the Dr. at the 9 months visit. Or call the nurse line if you are really concerned. It could just be because he was early. My son was 3 weeks early and he is 5 months old now. He isn't sitting up yet, just with support. But just call the Dr. or ask him on the next visit.
Good luck

Hey H.-
I know you've gotten a lot of responses. Just thought I'd add another one! My daughter is 9 months today. She was not born early or late, perfectly on time. She has been able to sit up with assistance since 4-5 months. But it was until just recently she's been sitting up by herself. And going from laying down to sitting up. She does the army crawl too, every once in awhile I'll catch her crawling like a big girl, but for now the other way is faster for her because she's perfected it. But everyone goes at their own pace. I worked in a daycare and one of my infants didn't even try pulling up until she was over a year old. So I think it's ok. Just give him time.

We have so much in common!! My name is H. and I have a girl that was born 4 weeks early. She will be 9 months on the 23rd. She is now sitting by herself, but not crawling or anything. I suggest getting a bumbo chair (Target or Babies'R'Us) This has really helped her sit up. I'm not too concerned with the crawling... she'll do it in her own time, or she may just skip that step and go straight to walking... who knows? She's happy, healthy, and loved... the rest are just details! :-)

Hi H.
My daughter now 3yrs old wasborn prematurely at 31wks she did not start sitting up on her on until she was about 10mths old. However in her case she was sent to nerologist and then therapist. She then was diagnosed with spastic diplegia (cerebral palsy). She is now 3 and doesn't walk yet, I would just talk to the doctor and if your still worried about it request to see a specialist(nerologist) to run a C-scan it will help ease your mind and give you some heads up on what to expect later in life. My daughter was given this before she left the hospital win she was born, we have known about her disability since she was 1mth old. Or he may be just a little developmentally delayed (also due to prematurity) in which he will catch up to everything pretty much by the time he is 2. Best advise is to talk to your doctor.

I have a son who will be 9mos in just a few days and he does not crawl and from the looks of it, he has no desire to. He just does the military crawl thing and gets where he needs to go just fine. Try not to worry too much.
