I am looking for a small, house broken dog for my kids ages 2,4 and 9. We have three girls who need a pet really bad but we just dont have the schedule to housebreak the dog as we both work full time. The dog would be well taken care of and loved by the whole family. We are looking for something that will not grow big. Thanks all!

What can I do next?

I would go for a smaller Golden Retriever. Golden's are larger dogs but they are absolutely the BEST dogs for children. They are sweet, friendly, playful, smart and loyal. Female's are smaller and you could rescue a full-grown housebroken Golden from two area rescue orgs. Some of the smaller females are 50-60 pounds. Or you could rescue a Golden mix from a shelter that would be smaller.
I just think really small dogs aren't the best for children.

Hello - My sister-in-law is a Vet Tech so I contacted her to see if there was a dog matching your description. Here is her reply.

She should check out www.petfinder.com because they have tons of shelter animals listed by area, each with a profile on them and most have photos, too. be careful, though. you'll want to adopt hundreds of them!

hundreds of sweet, loving, cute dogs are euthanized every single day in the dallas/fort worth area. i would recommend going to the nearest city shelter and adopting a dog, which is also saving a life. my dog came from the mid-cities animal shelter. she and her 6 puppies were scheduled to be put down that day, so we bailed them out just in the nick of time. she has turned out to be the greatest little dog - very sweet and laid-back. i also recommend that people prepare themselves for the responsibilities of pet ownership, which they don't normally even think about. the pet will need to be checked for heartworms, other internal parasites, and have a complete checkup. then come the vaccines, pet foods, heartworm prevention, flea and tick control, etc. adopting an adult dog is always great, because they will usually already be spayed or neutered, and you don't have to worry so much about parvo, distemper, etc, since these are diseases we see primarily in young puppies. also, they are almost always house broken. of course, any time you bring a new pet home, you can expect a period of adjustment, sometimes they develop diarrhea at first, due to stress and dietary changes, and it can take a little time for them to get used to their new home, but it sure does feel great to know that you've taken an animal out of a bad situation, and given them a happy, safe, loving, secure home. i wish we could save all of them from their horrible fate in the shelters, but every single adoption does make a difference. thar's my opinion on the matter...... save a life; adopt a shelter dog. There is a place called Operation Kindness in Carrollton that is great. They are a no-kill shelter, and most of their animals come from homes where people are being transferred for work, etc., so they know the animals' histories - that way you'll know if the dog is house-broken. We adopted a dog from there about ten years ago, and he has been a wonderful dog for our family. Let me know if you have any questions.

I recommend pugs- I have 3- 2 full pugs and 1 is half pug. They dont' get any bigger than 20 -25 lbs (that is the heavy side) and they are GREAT with families. All three of my dogs are therapy animals and work with kids and the elderly. We just opened our home to our foster/adopt 2-month old son- and they LOVE him already. Two of them howl when he cries trying to make him feel better and the other gives him kisses everyday and goes to check on him when he is sleeping. All of my dogs are rescue dogs from different places- shelters, DFW pug rescue is also a good place, or you can look online at different places like Dallas.craigslist.org for pets for adoption. Good luck!
