Thanks! After anyone reads these responses, I'd be SHOCKED if they still would flush them. So yes, I used to flush them (My mom did NOT use them , I was her only daughter, and I seriously think she hated the idea of tampons needing to be INSERTED -too "sexual"- LOL, so we never had the talk of "don't flush them") It said on the box to flush them. I don't normally use them, But I do every now and then. My husband kept telling me NOT to flush them, and I'd say "but it says to do so on the box!"
Well, I showed him your responses! He's quite pleased. LOL.

I am 'post menapause' (yea!!!)...but before that, we did have some 'clogging' issues that required a plumber...and his industrial strength equipment to clear it...(along with his industrial strength bill).
He indicated that more often than not, flushed feminine hygiene products were the culprit.
After that, I always wrapped and threw away.

They clog up the line. I dont want a big bill or the embarrassment of a plumber telling me and hubby its tampons. Not worth it. Sometimes if I am in a public bathroom with strong flushing toliets I might but, never at home or work.
I do, but after reading the responses here I won't anymore! I read in a magazine once that it was a good idea not to flush them, but I did not realize the damage they can do. Also in the article was what to do with the used tampons. It said to take a empty laundry detergent bottle and place it somewhere in the bathroom. When it is time to change out the tampon you put the used one into the empty bottle and close it up. By doing this you eliminate odor and nasty things sitting in you trash bin. I guess I know what I will be doing from now on. Great question!!!

They are not made to be flushed. It is not okay. That is why there are signs in most public bathrooms saying NOT TO FLUSH TAMPONS! The sign is not there for our reading enjoyment. That material going into our public water system treatment plants is a huge detriment to the clarifying process. Waste & toilet paper only go in the toilet - not even kleenex should be flushed b/c it does not break down at the rate it needs too to get through the system. Those that do flush them, please stop :)

My plumber friend calls them 'sewer rats' cuz thats what they look like when he's uncloggiing peoples plumbing from them.
When You flush them, they swell to 5 times thier size and block your plumbing. Why would anyone do that on purpose? Drop one in a cup of water and see what happens. Do you think that is kosher floating through the sewer line? They dont disintegrate when they get wet, or they'd disintegrate in us! lol not cool
No I've had enough sewage problems to last me a lifetime so no I do not flush them.
Um yeah!!!! I don't have a septic tank. Also, on the packaging, it says "FLUSHABLE". Ew, I don't want old used tampons in my trash bin :/

no way, not like I want to be messing with a bloody torpedo in my bathroom let alone the bill for clogs. Just as easy to throw those bad boys away.

Ive never flushed tampons. I had hysterectomy almost 10 yrs ago and my 17 yr old daughter has been raised to never flush tampons.
She had a friend once, just once, say it was ok to flush them while at our house and my daughter informed her friend when her dad was unplugging the toilet shed make sure he knew this friend said it was ok and it was hers.
So NOT ok at my house. We taught our daughter better.
Yep! I'm not on a septic tank, and I don't care if we're "supposed" to or not -I pay far too much in water, sanitation and property taxes to care! The sewer system can deal with my tampons.
No, because we have a septic system and you can't do that with a septic system. I grew up with a septic system too so I was "trained" never to do it.
No way. Had septic for years and it's not allowed. They also clog up sewer pipes, so it's not worth the plumbing (and repair) bills. You'll get used to it after a couple of months. I don't even flush them in public places just in case. How embarrassing if the commode overflowed!

I never thought twice about doing it, until I married my husband. His parents live out in the country and have a septic tank, and my FIL worked for the H2O company. I was then informed they weren't for flushing especially on a septic system.
I do still however, flush at home, sometimes---shhh don't tell my hubby, it just grosses me out having them in our garbage!

Great question. Good to know you really shouldn't. I guess I'm an idiot. I always took the notes in the restroom that mentions feminine hygiene products as meaning PADS. I thought, "Yeah. No kidding. Who would do that?" I couldn't use tampons. So, I didn't know. But, will remember this for my daughters in the future. :)
Nope, old plumbing (the house, not me). I used to but like Michele/cat we had a bad clog that required a plumber who told us that they really shouldn't be flushed even though the packaging says they're flushable. I wish I could flush them cuz I hate them in the trash, but I hate paying a plumber even more so I don't.
Not anymore. I used to always, but then suddenly my toilet started getting backed up every time, so my husband made me stop!

I do and kow that I think about it. Every once in awhile our toilets are slow to flush. Our pipes are bad any ways. I really don't use them much any more. I usually have a lot of discomfort with them any more.

EEEEWWWW!!! No wayyy!!! They last forever and pile up with the rest of the yuck..It's also very bad for pollution, I am amazed many mamas don't care...we should all be more environmentally conscious.

I don't really use them anymore because I don't get much of a period, but when I had one I always flushed them if I was away from home, but at home I generally wrapped them in toilet paper and through them in the trash. Sometimes I flushed them at home, but I tried not to... I would had to have to call a plumber and have him tell me that my pipe was full of tampons! I know that's silly and not reality based, but my mom said it and it was enough to keep me from flushing at her house or mine!
