My 17 year old son is suppose to Graduate this year. He did his first two High School years at home. Everything was done on the computer and that computer crashed so we lost everything. We have very little saved. The problem is he is short credits to graduate this year because I have no proof of his work. Any ideas on what I can do to convince the principle that we did this work? They want him to do another Senior year.

What can I do next?

There is an alternative school in Hadley called North Star and they work with families who are educating their kids using alternative methods and organization. They would likely be able to refer you to educational organizations that provides certificates (high school diploma?) of completion.

More and more colleges are interested in kids that have completed high school through alternate ways and are no longer requiring high school diplomas. I know this is true for the top tiered colleges, and maybe likely for the state schools, as well. Good luck.

Hi T.,

I was homeschooled and now have 2 kids at home to. Growing up we used a correspondence school in Ann Arbor MI, called Clonlara. They may be willing to help out in someway, maybe they have a graduate program template or curriculum you could use?? Just a thought.

I suggest you contact the New Hampshire Homeschooling Coalition. Their website is nhhomeschool.org and they are a tremendous help with issues like that. Their membership is free now too.
Goodluck!

I think you need to contact HSLDA. I heard that they are wonderful and should be able to help you. I also homeschool and I run a business from home as well. I only have 2 children right now, 10 children!! You are an encouragement to me. I pray that this will work out for you.

my suggestion would be to take the computer to a specialist if you haven't already done so. it's usually very rare that a computer crashes SOOO bad that everything is lost. see if someone can slave your hard drive or tool around in there and try to recover what you need.
as a homeschooled student, i never heard of a school that will let you graduate with them if you were homeschooled. once you're homeschooled, you're on your own. you can make your own diploma for you son. unless you were working with a homeschooling school, then they should have all the files backed up on their system. but if it was your own curriculm, i don't know why your local principal has any say on whether your son graduates or not.

There are companies that specialize in recovering data from computer hard drives that have crashed. You should consider contacting one of them for a free evaluation.
Good Luck!

Don't other teachers (not neccesarily in the school- but hired ones that work with homeschooling families) sign off on each year to prove the kid put in work for each grade? Do you have any of those records? Maybe you could get ahold of those teachers and they could vouch for you if you don't have that paperwork anymore.

What about a test to prove he knows the info covered in the first 2 years?

If you still have the computer, take it to a computer place (they have these little ones, with tech support guys) and they can get the stuff out of the hard drive - I bet it's still in there. If not, arrange to have your son meet with the principal, and discuss the things he learned, maybe write a few essays about the different subjects you covered. If he seems prepared and knowledgeable on the subjects, they might let him through. Good luck.

Hi, our computer crashed a while ago, and we had tons of pics on it from our son's first 3 years! We had a computer place in Burlington retrieve all the stuff from our hard drive. It was costly (about $500) but if it is that important, you know what they say.... If you still have the hard drive, then most likely they a computer place could retrieve it. If you have a problem locating one, you could email me and I could find out the name for you. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I'm a little puzzled that EVERYTHING was lost. You should be able to retrieve some work if you take the computer to a specialist. Did your son not do anything outside of the computer? Honestly, I would tend to agree with the principal's assesment that this doesn't make a complete high school curriculum. Have you considered having your son take the college boards of the classes in question, to prove his competence in the subject?
