Ok, so my 1 year old daughter has been having EXPLOSIVE diarrhea since Christmas Eve, it's everywhere. Any suggestions would help, have already called dr. and they just said to give her pedialyte to keep her hydrated. Any food suggestions, diaper rash treatments, anything to make her comfortable. THANKS ladies.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your help, I was able to get the Florastor for kids, and she's eating well, not wanting the bottle so much though, hopefully she will be better in a day or two.

there's another product like that but i forget the name. the pharmacist can show you where it is. sorry for you. I skipped out on a christmas trip because there was a house with 9 people in the house with the same thing. its supposed to be short lived. I think bannanas and rice can help too. (or rice cereal)

I agree with other posters--BRAT diet, try to get fluids in her but juice will make it worse. When my daughter was 18 mths she ended up in the hospital for 2 days b/c of dehydration...I always heard the warnings to watch out for signs of dehydration, but I always wondered, "how will I know?"

Don't worry- you'll know.

Go to the pharmacy and ask for a product called florastore. It's a natural product to restore the good bacteria in her gut that will help her recover from the diarrhea much more quickly. If they have the pediatric kind, you just dissolve it in liquid. The adult kind is the same dose, in a capsule that you can open up and dissolve. It's a little cheaper, just doesn't have the fruity flavoring of the kid's version. It's not cheap, but has worked like a charm for us.

Oh, my! I have twins and we are suffering over here too--since about the 21st! Mine are waking in the a.m. covered waist down. I have to brace myself to go into their room. The odd thing is that they have 2 to 3 loose stools then are generally ok the rest of the day.

Anyway, I have tried the regular stuff mixed in with their other foods to no avail...
rice cereal, bananas, apple sauce, toast--yogurt and milk are suppose to help too, but I am concerned that could be part of the problem for mine because of lactose issues. Mine won't drink pedialyte, or anything except soy formula and soymilk mixed. I did remove any milk-based products from their diet. Yeah, just be careful of their hydration.

Diaper rash---vaseline works as good as anything. Just change diaper and treat right away. They just need a barrier to protect their skin (not sure about any product and how it might work to treat the rash). Try not to let them sit in it, the acidity of the bm is the main irritant. Also, get rid of wipes and use wet cloth to clean. Wipes have irritated all my children (diarrhea or not). I could not believe how much that helped.

My ped says they will wait 2 weeks or more than 10/day before they do anything...

Hope they get better soon

BRAT diet- bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. foods that are binding- pasta, potatoes etc.. avoid foods cause lose stool- anything with a P- peaches, pears, prunes etc.. avoid juices- gatorade is great. For the butt- no wipes- just water and air dryt and then use A & D oinment and mix it with mylant or malox. Believe me this works awesome and it is very soothing! Good Luck!

Try cooled gelatin. Follow the recipe, but don't refridgerate. Give to your daughter, when temperature of the liquid allows.(Do not let gelatin set) Also, get a fresh apple. Peel a little, and then SCRAPE the apple "meat" with a spoon, it should be mushy enough for your 1 yr old to eat, about 1 tblsp for each "dose" at a time.(you may have to scrape a couple of times). Give after each B.M., until normal consistency. Scraping the apple, releases pectin, which helps solidify the feces. Bananas and cheese help, too.
Warm compresses on her belly might help keep cramping at bay.

When Connor had diarrhea our doctor recommended the BRAT diet. Bannanas, Rice, Apples (sauce or juice) and Toast. We mainly gave him bananas and applesauce adn apple juice. It seemed to help. Also, the doctor recommended pedialyte for hydration. She also sent us home with some G2 (the low calorie gatorade) which she said works just as well.

I'de stay off the gassy veggies for a couple of days. Grilled cheese, mac n cheese, etc. No gassy soups. Oatmeal is good, crackers/cheese. Her stool should return to normal in a day or so. Keep her hydrated with the pedialite and no ice cold drinks...room temperature only.

No fun. My son is fighting something that started Christmas Eve too. I'm up now in the middle of the night because he is not sleeping.

The Florastore helped him in the past but it's expensive and I found that most of the pharmacies I called had to special order it. It's about $10 for a 5 day supply. We've been giving my son a baby pro-biotic from Whole Foods instead. I don't have the name on me right now but there are a few to choose from and Whole Foods is helpful. This one is unflavored and we just put it in his milk once a day. So far it's helped the diarrhea and the diaper rash.

It seems to be a vicious cycle for him. First the diarrhea then the terrible diaper rash. When it starts to look bad I stop using wipes and switch to just water and a paper towel or washcloth. And I slather him with Desatin, the origional formula because is had the most zinc oxide. Our doc recomended Butt Paste but that didn't seem to help much. I hope you guys feel better soon!

Someone mentioned the BRAT diet...which is bannanas rice A? and dry toast

Not sure if the a is apples or applesauce..... I know at least no juice...that'll make it worse

pedialyte is best tasting very cold or they make pedialyte freezer pops too

I would call the dr back though if it hasn't eased up by tomorrow...thats a long time even for a bug....

Just make sure you push a lot of fluids!!! Popsicles are a great way to get fluids to her. Pedialyte makes them too. Giving her a bath with baking soda in the water will help the diaper rash and also help sooth it, and put zink oxide
lotion on will help. Don't worry if she doesn't want to eat, just push the fluids, even Gateraide is great!
If she keeps up with for another day I'd get her to the Dr anyway! You don't want her to dehydrate! Good luck.

VERY important to keep the child hydrated. If he is starting to be listless, lethargic, he probably would need IV fluids. He's thirsty...give him clear liquids, diluted apple juice. Put a teapot or pot full of water on the stove and boil it for 5 minutes with a cover. The water will be free of bacteria from the tap. Let it cool down and use it to dilute the juice. Kids don't like pedialyte, it's too salty and they won't drink it. They won't take the pedialyte popsicles, either...they, too are salty. Popsicles, flat cream soda..let it stand open, chilled to get the fizz out. Advance the diet slowly with the "BRAT" diet...Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. Tummy is irritated, so advance slowly. The next few days after this stops, any fruits or vegetables should be cooked or canned....easier to digest.
Take him to an immediate care center or to an emergency room or call 911 if he is lethargic or listless and less responsive. A&D ointment or Desitin can help the sore butt and anus from the "burn" of the stool that is passing too fast throught the colon...very acidic.
Good luck!
