Has Anyone Had Any Luck Using Maderma for Kids??

Hello everyone,
Last night we had a house full of company. The kids were playing outside, and decided that sword fighting with sticks was a good idea (ugh!). My eight year old (who lacks a some depth perception from a lazy eye), caught my 5 year old under the eye with a stick. We are very lucky that he did not get him in the eye (about 1 cm off), his guardian angel was working hard last night! He has a nasty scrape/cut on his bottom lid. I had a neighbor (a nurse practicioner) take a look, and she said that he did not need to go to the ER, but he it will look nasty for awhile, and may scar. This morning it is swollen. My question is has anyone used the Maderma cream for kids? Does it work? I also know that vitamin E helps too, but wanted to throw it our there to see what you all think..
Thanks!

No experience with Maderma but with healing wounds. Give her a lot of vitamin c (maybe airborne or chewables). It makes it heal so much faster.

I had a bunionectomy on both sides of my foot and used Mederma for six staight months on the incision site and guess what? I have two very noticable scars on my foot. It is so expensive and I'm not sure my scars would have been any worse had I not used it. BUT for a small wound that is not too deep it may be worth it. Considering that the wound is on his face of all places. I do believe you cannot use Mederma until the wound is completely healed.

R.,
My 16 month old son had an accident recently to his face (very similar situation you had with the sticks) requiring attention at the ER and a plastic surgeon consult. He told me that I could get Mederma, if it made me feel better, but it really wouldn't do very much to reduce the scarring. He said I was far better off saving my money and buying an AloeVera plant and sunscreen. He said, that as the wound heals and scars the #1 enemy is the sun. If your child is outside he should be covered with sun screen. I asked about Vitamin E, cause my mom and sister swear by it. He told me that there is recent research to suggest that Vitamin E actually can hinder proper healing. Overall, he lectured and lectured about the sunscreen. Needless to say the child does not leave the house without sunscreen and a hat. My husband says I am a worry wort and scars build character for boys. Anyways, there is my armchair diagnosis and advice. Good luck to you. I'm so sorry you had this experience. I swear my boys are going to scare me to death one of these days with their antics.

Hi R.. I have been using it on my daughter's forehead due to 6 stiches in January. I would say that it looks considerably better and a lot less red. The ER Doc told us that it was important to not expose it to the sun for the first year, otherwise it would always be noticeable. We have been using sunblock on it, we'll see. Overall, I think it is a great product and it will be worth the effort of applying it daily. Good luck.

I would recommend Neosporin for the initial healing and then A&D Ointment (yeah, the bottom rash stuff) after that. I find A&D to be a great nighttime treatment for rashes, scrapes, scratches and burns. It's a little too thick for daytime use (plus it's a little stinky), but works great overnight to heal all kinds of skin ailments. My son and I both have very sensitive skin and get excema, contact dermatitis, you name it....A&D clears it up.

Whether it helps for long term scarring, I'm not sure.....but since it helps so rapidly, I think the scarring is diminished.

I used it on my son when he took a nasty spill and it worked great! I used neosporin and bandaids for the healing, but the redness and scar was still there, so I consistently used mederma and you can't even tell where it was. good luck!!

good old neosporin is the best for kids....be careful with anything you use, since it's in the eye area, though...they could easily rub it into their eye and end up with problems worse than a scar

Hi, R.! My son received five stitches on his forehead (right between his eyes). The ER docs recommended neosporin for the initial healing. After the stitches were removed, we were to use Mederma. We did, for about eight weeks, and I was really pleased with the results! I would just be cautious (of course) about using anything close to the eye. So sorry your little guy has to experience this!
Take care!

My four year old split open his forehead and had stitches (3 layers of stitches - ugh!). After the stitches were removed, we started using Mederma for kids - following the directions on the product. It's been about a year, and my son's scar is hardly noticable - yeah!

Make sure its completely healed first. It won't help the wound heal. Cold compress for the swelling.

Oh I am the first? Well I do not remember the name but I did use a cream for a while on my girls..also on the face from needing stitches to the face (Dog bite)..so maybe a combo of that & the good drs she is barely noticable. More of a white mark in close up photos really. So i say if ya have the cash give it a try. Any lotion probably wouldnt hurt if he'll let ya put it on enough times. Oh it barely took anytime at all before you could really see my babys scars so i am sure you'll do even better. Glad his eye wasnt hurt!

I don't know about Maderma, but.....my son had stiches by his eye when he was 3 and now he is about to turn six, and you can hardly see it. I know that by the time he is an adult it won't be visable at all. I would give it some time - like till the end of summer and if it still looks like it will be bad, then use it.
