Halloween and Women's Costumes

Ok, I don't have a "question" but more of an observation regarding Halloween and costumes for women. When did it become a sexfest? Meaning, practically every costume for adult women (and now even younger) has to be "sexy" like a "sexy referee"?! I consider myself far removed from being a prude, it just seems to be getting a little out of hand. I am planning on dressing up for my daughter's school Halloween party as I am a helper and have been kind of amazed at the costume selection (I have decided to create my own :-).

What can I do next?

Yeah, I've never been a fan of the "slutty X" Halloween trend for women. I tend to not dress up.
I did have one year where I went to a few parties as a doctor (in scrubs) and looked totally out of place, since every other women there was busting with cleavage with the a** hanging out.

I'd prefer to just skip it all together!

I don't know when this happened either, but I've certainly noticed it. God help you find anything decent if you're full-figured, too!

It is not just the women's. It's the teens, tweens & even a few kids' costumes as well.

I'm going to be a geisha this year. Well covered.

Other things I've seen that are cute without being slutty (although you can find a slutty version as well)

Snow White
Dorothy from Wizard Oz
Minnie Mouse
Cleopatra
Scarlett O'Hara
Lady Liberty
Justice (but not the one with one breast exposed :-)
Cruella DeVille
Princess Jasmine
Cinderella
Fairy (can make your own no-sew tutu so you don't have to have a very short one)

I know, right? It's ridiculous. It's funny because I was really trying to be a referee! I was looking at it thinking, hmm, if I wear black leggings and tennies, a tank top under it and maybe a zippered hoody but leave it open, maybe that wouldn't be too disgusting.
Now instead I'm thinking maybe a boxer, I could just wear my husbands long basketball shorts, with a tank top and fake championship belt and wear my silky robe over it with some boxing gloves.
Or I might do greek goddess. I'm thinking of buying a billowy white drapey dress from thrift store and trimming it with iron on greek looking ribbon and adding tone of gold jewelry and sandals. Either way, my whole behind will at least be covered!

I know! We have actually spent a little more and rented costumes for the last two years (annual party) because I don't need to go to my husband's boss' house half nude!

Consider renting for the day- it's not as pricey as you think and much more variety!

Right on! It's seems like everything you see in ads, commericials are all like that. THANK goodness women have the right to choose!! AMEN - to that sisters!!!!

You can always choose that but quite frankly I'd be The Glinda the Good Witch, Dorothy or The Wicked Witch of the West anyday!

Sexy Kitty really is not my style!

I always make my own costumes. Having kids, I keep them pretty tame.
Besides that, it's flipping freezing here at Halloween time. Even if your costume involves a long sleeve turtle neck and thermal leggings, you're under dressed.
Seriously.

Funny you should mention this. I was just looking at a circular, in last Sunday's paper, that was all costumes and I thought the very same thing. Fortunately, I sew and have a closet of many fun-type costumes from which to choose. It's best not to buy these...make a statement with your $$, and hopefully some marketing person will figure it out.

I use to work for an s** t** website and we sold the EXACT the same costumes. They are all made by Leg Avenue and they do NOT look like the picture on the bag. They do a LOT of costuming to make those cheap costumes look good.

Generally those costumes are used for role playing but seem have jumped ship into the "general population." They are basically disposable sex props in my opinion.

Thanks for a great observation! I feel the same way about it. Not to mention how small they are these days. I'm like really? And no offense to anyone, if you want to be sexy, be sexy, but does everything have to come across that way? And good luck on making your own, you're better off!

I agree...its crazy! When I was younger, before I ever heard the term "MILF" or "Cougar", or anything like that..there were those creepy (to me) Moms who did the Elvira thing...black wig and dress and the bust just falling out. We would TOT at those houses and the Moms would bend over to put candy in our bags and it was like WHOA!!! Maybe that was the downfall?? LOL

We go to a family friendly party most years and I never have good ideas. Costumes are not required and our daughter is a teen now, so none of us are very invested in the costume part of this party. Besides, its about 900* in their house all the darn time. At their house the IDEA of less is more sounds good, but would never fly! LOL

I know what you mean. Everything is sex...sex...sex. Just scotch tape a bean to your forehead and go as a HUMAN BEAN...lol Of course you have to be naked....lol Good luck. You could dress up like a famous person in history and let them guess who you are i.e., Betsy Ross etc.

I totally agree with you. Almost all the costumes that came in the costume catalog for female teens and adults were sexual in nature. There wasn't a single item that I wanted to wear. It is just more evidence of our hyper-sexualized society. I'm making my own costume again this year.
