Great post! I have been looking into this too. I have heard wonders about Love and Logic, and 123 Magic. I personally LOVE anything by Dr. Sears. HOpe we can both get some help!!

Hi C. - Absolutely!! RUN - do not walk - to the bookstore and pick up "Your Baby and Child, Birth to Five years" by Penelope Leach.

It is by far the best and most "normal" parenting book out there. She's just real about life and stuff that comes up.

I highly recommend the book Shepherding A Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp, just finished it. The only book I found that gets down to the heart of your child's behavior in contrast to giving you 'band aids' for the behavior that will only explode in your face when they grow up. Very easy and fast to read too.

BUT, this book would not work for you if you are not a Christ follower, it is based on the Bible, otherwise it would just not make any sense to you and I would not waste your time on it, I thought I would mention it anyway :) (since most books just give you temporary ways to deal with behavior but will never change the heart of your child).

I ditto the love and logic and Rosemond sentiment! I wish I had read them sooner!!! Love and Logic even has videos which are good for a busy dad who might not be willing to read! It really helps to have Mom and Dad on the same page!

Hi, I don't know of any parenting books, but your request made me laugh because I can totally relate! The middle child is definitely an issue. I don't believe in the terrible twos. I strongly believe it is the terrible threes as I am going through that right now!! Good luck and it is nice to know we are not alone!!

Dr. Sears has a complete line of amazing books. Him and his wife Martha(RN)(and their two sons who are also pediatricians)have eight children and are both highly accomplished pediatricians. The successful Child and the Discipline Book are two I highly recommend.

As previously mentioned, 1-2-3 Magic is great! If you are Christian, there is also a Christian version of the same book. Both are excellent. I was a nanny for several years, and found this book as a great tool. I am now a mother to a two-year old girl and use it on her. I've recommended it to several friends and families (probably 10 or more) and they have all come back with rave reviews.

I personally think The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp is great! It speaks in lamens terms, and is very realistic in its advice and practice. Which reminds me, I should take my own advice and read it for what I'm going thru right now - a very whiney 1-year old!

I like Dr Sears a lot. He and his wife, Martha, have written several books together, including a baby and toddler book, a discipline book, etc. Also, a friend recommended a book to me called Playful Parenting. I haven't read it, but she loves it. I've also heard recently about a book called Unconditional Parenting, that I've been interested in checking out.

1-2-3 Magic is only ok. It has their strategy but not much else about general good parenting.

I have not read it myself, but I have heard that Touchpoints is great!

I really like his DVDs.

Both of these are very logic based, no fancy trends du jour. Just old fashioned common sense, yet somehow, it seems hard to be logical in the heat of the moment, but, they remind you how!

My kids are 11 & 12 and (if I do say so myself) are well mannered, respectful & quite nice. And the resources above really helped ME be my best, in order to help them.

I've had great luck with "Happiest Toddler on the Block"

We love Sears & Sears "The Discipline Book" and "The Successful Child". Practical, grounded in experience (they have 8 children), grounded in science, grounded in decades of pediatric practice, written very well, you can read it even when you have kids and seem to have no "extra time". So far their advice has always worked for us: son of three years, baby of 9 months. The books i recommended cover middle childhood and teen years as well.

I haven't purchased it yet but there is a book 1,2,3 magic discipline but they actually sell copies at my pediatricans office so when I go on monday I am going to get a copy. After I take look at it I will let you know more but my ped swears by it and he has 3 boys
