Girl Names to Go with "Claire"

My husbands Grandmother (who has passed), her name was Clara Mae. He adored her beyond what words can describe... she raised him, they spoke EVERY day, sometimes more than once. It was a relationship closer than any I have ever seen a grandson ever have with a grandma. So when she suddenly passed I knew that if we ever had a girl we would name our baby in honor of her.
Unfortunately, his family ONLY produces boys so the likelyhood of a girly is rather slim. However, on a longshot we tried the Shettles method and we are anxiously awaiting to find out what we've got.

So.... how do we incorporate the name Claire into a name without the first name ACTUALLY being Claire?
What we're considering is something along the lines of a double name such as "Ella Claire" BUT Ella is used sooooooo often now, so I wanted to get some fresh new ideas.
Thanks,
C.!

So What Happened?

Additional Note: I ADORE the name "Ivy" - I always have... I am tall and willowy and have long curly hair that reminds me of tangled ivy. So I always pictured having a girl named Ivy or Lily (because I'm the palest of whites you can imagine).
So.... Ivy Claire? Lily Claire?
Now pause for a moment. Say Ivy Claire. With a southern accent. What does it sound like? "Well, I declare"
Would you have made that correlation if I hadn't have pointed it out? LOL. I do love it, but is it tooooooo southern?
We ARE southern, but - - - -

This are websites full of lists of double names, which I really like because as they get older they can choose one to go by, go by initials, or stick with both names.

Some I found with Claire
Anna Claire
Bettie Claire
Emma Claire
Eva Claire
Georgia Claire
Katie Claire
Mary Claire
Ida Claire
Nina Claire
Sara Claire

To me they all sound really southern. :) Not a bad thing. I really like Emma Claire, but you will have the same concern as with Ella Claire, Emma is very popular right now. I also like Mary Claire and Anna Claire.

Hope that helps!!

My daughter's name is Jillian Clare. I loved that name...and she does too (she's 18 now). We spelled it that way because our street name was "Clair" and I did not want her to think we named her after the street we lived on. lol

My middle child we were debating whether to name her Elia (after my husband's sister, calling her Ellie) which is similar to one of your two names or Hayley, so we named her Halie with that spelling. And her middle name is Lynn, same as mine.

Other suggestions:
Samantha Claire
Julia Claire
Hannah Claire
Clarisse Claire
Lillian Claire (and call her Lily?)

Either way you can't go wrong with what you choose because your obviously giving some thought to it.

My great grandmother's name was Clara. :) Incidentally, everyone called her Alice, although I have no idea why?

So how about Alice Claire? I think Alice is such a neat name for a girl... You could then shorten it to "Ali Claire" which I think is just adorable and it flows nicely off the tongue!! It just makes me think of a spunky, girly girl.

I also like Mary Claire for something more traditional-sounding, which also incorporates the "Ma" from "Mae" which would further resemble grandma's name! OR how about Macy Claire? Also incorporates the "Ma" from grandma's "Mae"?

None of the names I mentioned are terribly over-used right now, so they may work?

Best wishes on getting your little pink bundle of joy!

Considering your additional note, I think Ivy Claire is fine. I don't think people will make the correlation with "Well I declare." Also, I agree w/others. If you want to honor the grandmother, use Clara Mae.

Also, I like using Anna Claire & Ella Claire and calling her both of the names....not just Anna or Ella. I love Ella Claire actually.......

And, you could forgo your wish of Ivy and use Clara as the first name, just find another middle name if you didn't like Mae. I have a niece who is Emma Mae and at first I thought it was too southern, but now, 12 yrs later, it still fits her perfectly. Clara Elizabeth, Clara Reese, Clara "anything".....what about some other family names?

Hope you get a girl!!

First of all, and I'm in no way questioning what you and your husband want to do, its your choice, but to put my 2 cents in:

I think Clara Mae in itself is a beautiful name, she's unlikely to have many other Clara's in her class, and old fashioned names have really made a come back. I think I'm also partial to it because for some odd reason my hubby calls me "Clara" as a pet name - I have no idea why (my name is L.!)

As a next choice - why not go with Claire as the first name? I love it! I even considered it all my life as my daughters name, until I got married and it didn't go with my hubby's last name at all!

If you are set on Claire as a middle name, how about Maya Claire? It kind of incorporates the two. Or perhaps you have someone on your side you are close to or that has passed away you could honor and make it a double honor name. I also thought Madelaine Claire that someone suggested was cute, though that name might be popular.

If you really want to honor the grandmother, I would leave Clara or Claire as the first name, it would probably mean a lot to your husband and both names are beautiful.

And if you do end up with a boy? There's always Clayton! :)

Of course you should do what ever you want - my husband wanted to honor his deceased mother by giving her name to our little girl - it was Shirley Rose. I absolutely refused Shirley and put Rose in the middle! So, though I love my advice take it with a grain of salt :)

Good luck on getting your little girl and congrats on the new addition!!

We named our daughter with a middle name of Claire. Her first name is rather unusual so we just call her Claire. The one thing I found that makes a first name go well with a middle name of Claire is that it should have more than one syllable, and end in a vowel sound. The name you gave as an example, Ella Claire, actually has both these characteristics. Here are some other ideas:
Rebecca Claire
Amanda Claire
Gianna Claire

You'll notice one other characteristic of these names is that the accent is on the second syllable, which is also the second-to-last syllable. Re-BEC-ca, Am-AN-da, Gi-AN-na. I liked that cadence to the name although you may prefer something different.

Hope you get a girl! The story of your husband and his grandmother was touching, thanks for sharing.

Its wonderful that you are looking so carefully. The name is the first really important thing that you give your baby. Claire is a beautiful rememberance of your husband's grandmother who obviously meant so much to him. Best of luck! D.
