My friend is having her 2nd baby. She is due in November. She already has one daughter and is now having a little boy. She has a lot of things she needs and is getting a lot of clothes from friends who have boys. She is not having a baby shower but I still want to get her a gift and I'd like to get her something besides clothes. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Thanks for the wonderful ideas everyone!! I have a lot to think about. Diapers were going to be a definite thing and I really like the idea of a gift card to a photography studio. So much to think about.....thanks again for all of the ideas!!

Diapers are a must! Newborn and size one are great starters. You could throw in some wipes as well. It may not seem like the cutest gift, but coming from a mother of two boys, with a baby girl on the way in Oct. a gift of diapers would be my dream gift.

A gift certificate for a local photography studio is always a nice gift for the parents that aren't in need of "baby stuff".

This may have already been suggested, but what if you found out what brand of carseat/stroller she had for her daughter, and buy her replacement covers in "boy" patterns? You could also be completely different and buy the big sister a present: there are tons of books, games, and dolls to help prepare kids for a new baby in the house.

Hi J.,
If you want to give an original gift that would be well-received as well as much appreciated, I suggest baby sitting services from a professional service such as I Need A Sitter, LLC. I Need A Sitter offers baby sittting gift certificates that you can buy which pre-pays for at least three hours (or more if you choose to do so)of baby sitting from experienced, adult baby sitters who have been thoroughly checked. It is a great and unique gift (especially if the new mom doesn't have help or family around) to give a brand new mom some needed time to relax or get errands done without having to 'pop in' and 'pop out' the baby carrier at every stop. I know I would have LOVED to have gotten such a gift after I had both of my girls. The website is, www.ineedasitterllc.com

Hello! I have a little girl & little boy, and was in the exact same boat as her - friends were (and still are!) giving me lots of clothes, & you pretty much have everything from the first time around. Looking through all of the suggestions here, these are all great ideas and exactly what I would have told you, so any one of these would be great! From personal experience I can tell you that there just don't seem to be as many pictures the 2nd time around, so I really like the photo album idea or even a gift certificate to get photos taken. Best of luck to you friend, and to you for the gift! :)

Maybe you could give her a gift card that way she can use it later to buy something she may need. There may be something she may not think about that she needs until after the baby is born.

I just had baby #2, both girls. We got a lot of stuff from our wonderful friends and family, but the things we appreciated the most were diapers, sensitive wipes, and food. My stepmom cooked a couple of meals for us and brought them over. They were casserole type meals, so all we had to do was put them in the oven. There was enough for at least two meals per dish. It was so nice not to have to worry about cooking when we got home from the hospital.

Hi, J.! How about a small pre-decorated baby album? You can decorate the pages and she can just pop her pictures in as she likes! Everyone takes pictures of their babies, and with a new one, it's hard to find time to put an album together. You can also give her a nice photo safe pen so she can journal in her new album!

get her something for herself, something that says you are thinking of her. When my 2nd was born, I had a friend give me a necklace that represented both my children, but it was for me and not a baby item. It meant so much and I still wear it even after 15 years.
Candles, bath oil, earrings, necklace, stationary, a homec ooked meal so she won't have to when she comes home from the hospital. Those were all gifts I received and loved

Hi J.. It is very sweet of you to get your friend a gift for her 2nd baby. Have you thought of getting your friend diapers, lotions, wipes, babywash, etc.? Even better, how about a gift certificate for a prenatal massage or a spa after the baby is born. You could also make her coupons she can "redeem" for you to babysit her oldest after the baby is born. Even if it's just so she can take a nap while the baby sleeps. A friend of mine came over and made us dinner after our 2nd was born, and it's something I'll never forget. It was nice to have someone take care of me and still show support for having a baby (even though it wasn't my first). Good luck! Hope this helps.

I would say if she already has most things, then buying a baby item is not a necessity. I have four, and the gift I remember recieving most is a gift basket for myself including bath salts, lotions, etc. for a little self pampering after the baby is born. I can never remember who got what, but I always remember exactly who got me the 'mommy basket'!

Hi J.,
If your friend plans to breastfeed, how about a nursing cover with matching burp cloth? Also, depending on the age of her daughter, she might enjoy having her own little "Pee-a-Dollie" to match mom's! Check out this website: www.peekaboobees.com.

I know this may not sound like the most fun gift to give, but diapers or wipes are the best gifts. I just had my third and I had all the stuff from the other two so friends got me diapers or wipes. My daughter will be three months next week and we have not had to buy diapers or wipes yet. Believe me when I say it is great to not have to worry about that in the beginning. Also, I would buy size 2.

My friends and I throw a diaper shower for 2nd babies. It is a time to celebrate the baby and the mom. Plus, every newborn needs diapers. I found it a relief to have tons of diapers. It gets harder to just run out for diapers with 2 kids.

How old is the daughter? We're expecting our second child in February, and there are some things that we need another one of (crib mattress, as the one we have is in our son's toddler bed; high chair/booster seat, etc.).

See if you can get a gift certificate to an online grocery shop, that way she doesn't have to drag 2 kids out for grocery shopping so soon.

Another thing to consider is a little something for the oldest, as sometimes they feel a bit left out of all the excitement.

Get her a gift card for a nice restaurant and offer to babysit so her and her hubby can go out by themselves after the baby is born for some much-needed time away.

That was the best thing I got when kiddos #2 and #3 were born. :-)

Hello J. diapers, diapers, diapers. These are always in need of, the wet ones are great and save on laundry with washcloths. Also a gift certificate where she will be buying any baby item that she doesn't receive. Too I would get a little gift for the sibling so they don't feel left out. Good Luck and hold the baby for me ;-) an ole grannie

Get her something for herself like maybe a gift to the local day spa or for a new hair cut or a gift basket of her favor scents. After all she is the one doing all the hard work (birth). I did this for my sister when she had her third child. All boys so she too didn't need anything. She loved it.

You can always get something like a kit to make hand/footprints or records book, or even boys colors in scrapbook items (if you know shescrapbooks). There are some humerous books out there too she'll appreciate with #2, like I wasa good mom until I had kids. Diapers were always a hit with me....

Diapers (pampers) party and bring food to put in the frezzer all new moms find it hard with a newborn and other children to find time for them or themselves cooking is a nice way of not having to make that mess. Being a young grandma all of us grannnies thats what we do for our friends children and it is a wonderful ay of helping. Give creative gift certificates on cleaning, doing laundry, shopping ect.

Diapers. Best gift ever :) You know she'll need them and so they aren't a waste, nor will they just get pushed to the back of the closet. I just had my 3rd boy and my church had a diaper and wipes "shower" for us and it helped so much.

The best gift I received when I had my second child was my neighbor made dinner for my family the first two days we were home from the hospital. It was such a nice, thoughtful, never thought-of gift that I am still in shock by it. We had only lived in the neighborhood for two years and had not become close neighbors, but she knew exactly what we could use. We still are not close because we each are involved with our own families, but I have told her many times how greatful we are for her thoughtfulness. It was so nice knowing that we didn't have to worry about dinner when you are bringing home a new baby. There are enough moments of anxiety.

A special album for the child's pictures? You know the one's like "Baby's first years" is always nice. If the children aren't going to share a room a special lamp for the baby's room. His own dish set. A special picture for his wall, we use guardian angels with the child's name on them in our group. If they are church members his own Precious Moments Bible.
Just a few suggestions.

Anything practical is fantastic. Diapers, like mentioned earlier, are great. If you want it to look nicer you can do a basket with diapers or wipes or lotion or baby wash. All of those things that aren't "glamorous" but totally needed! We also had friends bring over food, which was a giant help. And one friend that doesn't cook gave us a gift card to a restaurant and offered to pick it up and deliver it to us. It was so nice!
We have 5 kids, so the more practical items were the ones that I started to appreciate the most!
Good luck!

I haven't read any responses yet so this might be a repeat..But put together a baby care package in a basket or a huge oversized gift bag. Diapers are ALWAYS needed with babies..obviously! Wipes, baby lotions, soaps, cereals (check expirations to make sure that it wont be expired by the time a 4-6 month old gets to eat it), sippy cups in boy colors, never can have too many onesies! Anything a baby needs put in the bag.

A few years ago I became a big advocate for keeping children safe from chemicals in traditional home and personal care products. My inspiration came after a close friend's 5 yr old son was diagnosed with cancer and doctors pointed to environmental triggers. I think giving Moms a gift of safe products for their new baby is one of the best gifts friends and family can give.
