Just moved from Shawnee to Op and am wondering if anyone uses Prarie Life off 135th St.? If so, would you recommend it? I would need to use their child care, so I am most interested in knowing if you feel like they have good care. Also- classes, if it is overly busy or costly compared to others in the area. thanks!

L.,

I toured Prairie Life a couple of years ago when I was looking to get back into shape, and I really liked the facility. The child care area seemed very nice and my kids enjoyed the brief time they spent there while I was touring.

Ultimately though, I couldn't justify the expense to join there...it was just too costly.

I ended up buying a treadmill for my home and have been happy with that option.

Good luck!

One place that isn't well known is the Jewish Community Center on the Sprint Campus at 115th and Nall. You do not have to be Jewish to join, and they have incredible facilities and really excellent child care. Their pool alone is worth it IMO! (3 waterslides, diving boards, lap pool, zero depth, floating lily pads, snack bar... I could go on and on!) It is definitely not overly busy because I think everyone thinks you have to be Jewish to join. Yoga, women's weight-lifting, cardio boxing, spinning, traditional type aerobics, step classes.

Hi L.,

My friend Lisa works in the daycare there. It is a great club but it is very expensive. There is a brand new club off of K-10 and Ridgeview across from Watsons. I have friends that work out there as well and they think it is fantastic. The name of that club escapes me at the moment. I have a membership at 24 hour fitness. I bought a 3 year package for 800$ almost two years ago. It too is a great club.

Good Luck!

L.,

I have been a member there for the past 4 years and really enjoy the facility and staff. I have also used the daycare and children's activities. My son has had some special needs and they always engage and enquire about him even when he has not been there for a while. They are very good and I highly recommend the facility.

I do not recommend prairie life on barkley,i put my child in daycare while wrking out,i checked on her and noticed the daycare employee was not watching the kids.i also noticed her boyfriend hanging out in the room with her
i think this is a very unprofessional gym,and not a well managed daycare.i ended my membership, and now belong to lifetime fitness...and very happy with everything.

I belong to The Athletic Club of OP, and really like it. It is not as "glitzy" as Prairie Life, they have a good daycare center while you work out, and great Yoga classes.

I researched a lot of clubs in Overland Park a couple of years ago and found Prairie Life to be the most expensive in the area. Membership is per person regardless of age. Cost goes down with each member but for me and my two kids it would have been about $200 a month or close to it. We joined Gold's in Olathe and have been happy with the childcare but it is about 20 minutes from us and few classes.
In October Lifetime Fitness is opening at 135th & Metcalf. It is going to be an amazing facility and our whole family can join for about $130/month. www.lifetimefitness.com if you want to check it out.

The other club that was mentioned is called Healthridge. It is supposed to be similar to Lifetime in that I think it has a Salon and Cafe also but maybe not the indoor outdoor waterpark. Cost was about the same but they had contracts and Lifetime does not.

yes, i just moved here not long ago and i was in a similar situation. i tried the 24hour fitness at 119th and metcalf...DO NOT USE THAT PLACE!!! they don't pay attention to the kids, left my little one in a poopy diaper for at least an hour. plus, it's not that clean, and you have to wait to get in a lot. so i quit there and joined praiire life. i like it so far...my kids really enjoy it. the staff interacts with the kids, and they watch them well. we have a month-to-month membership that i can cancel with 30 days notice. we pay about 125 a month, but i have 4 kids i pay for...so it is a bit more expensive than if tyou just have 1 or 2 kids.
but did you know that Lifetime fitness is opening in october on 135th and metcalf??? it may be a farther drive for you, so you may not be interested. but pricewise, i think it's about the same as prairie life. but of course they may be running special deals as it gets closer to their opening because they are new. you'd have to check. i belonged to lifetime in illinois and i totally loved it there...and my kids did too. i became quite friendly with the child center staff, and they were always top notch, and i swear, they almost loved my kids as much as i do. well, ok, that's a little strong, but you know what i mean.
but anyway, one thing about praiire life, is that the kids membership fee gets them free swimming lessons, and that's cool. but, if you buy the 12 month membership and you make any changes to it, it starts your 12 months all over again. so if in say, 4 months you add your hubby or another child, when you do, you start all over with the 12 months from that point.

hope that helps.
