Essure or Tubal Ligation??

Okay.. we have 3 kids now and we have decided that we are DONE now! Has anyone had the essure procedure? Our doctor is pressing for that one, but I am unsure about it because it has only been around for a few years. On the other side... I wanted to get the tubal ligation because it has been around for ever, the doctor scared us senseless talking about all the risks with that procedure.
Please share what decision you made and why.
Thank you so much!

Hi A.,

I asked this question not too long ago as well and I was so close to going forward with the Essure procedure. I had been looking online and found so much good information but then I searched further and found forums online where people who had the procedure posted messages about their experiences. I thank God that I found this information. I read about women who had the procedure and then the device ended up going outside of one of their tubes and ended up attached to their abdomen or bowel. Some of the stories really scared me. I will try to find some information and e-mail you the link to one of the forums.

I had a tubal done after my 3rd child and it was the best decision for me and my husband. I looked into the essure procedure and I thought it was too risky because it was so new. My doctor didn't want to do either because as he said it was ruining his business...yes, I know he was a jerk and no I don't see him anymore.
If you are having a c-section you best choice would be a tubal, if you are sure that you do not want to have any more children EVER! If there is even the slightest maybe than I would go with an IUD.
I would not have my husband go the vasectomy route though, there are long term negative side effects that most don't seem to consider like an increased risk of prostate cancer and alzheimer's disease. Neither of which I would wish on my worst enemy. Luckily, for us their are no side effects with a tubal or if I remember correctly the essure procedure.

My mom actually had a tubal after her last child without a c-section and she didn't have any complications and that was almost 30 years ago. So it can and has been done.

Take your time with this huge decision and be safe in the mean time!

Good Luck!
J.

Personally permanent sterilization makes me nervous- I just feel that someone cannot possibly be sure now that their feelings will not change in 10 years or that their life circumstances will not change. I would consider giving the IUD a look- at 5 or 10 years they are simple, low-maintenance, and an efficacy rate the same as sterilization.
Essure is a fairle new procedure which I too would shy away from a bit. If you are decided on permanent sterilization why not consider vasectomy? Much longer in practice but much simpler than tubal ligation. Good luck.

DO NOT GET A TUBAL!! Its terrible!! Its painful and you can have a lot of problems and you can't reverse it. Plus you still get your period and most women have more cramping and bleeding. Its not worth it at all. If you want someone to get fixed then tell your husband to get fixed. Go with the IUD if neither of you want to get fixed.

I had tubal ligation done 17 years ago and have had no problems with it. I am glad I did it. I was having minor surgery done at the time for other reasons so it worked out great.

I am 26, and I had a tubal done during my last c-section. My doctor placed clips, instead of other methods. My husband has 2 kids from a previous marriage, and we have 2 beautiful girls together, and we have decided that our family is complete. Though I do regret not being able to have another child, I also know that it is best that we stop with 4. As far as the tubal went, I have NEVER had a problem with it. Yes, you do get a period every month, but my cramps have lessened since I had it done. I would definitely do it again. As far as the Essure, my doc did mention it, but I did feel a bit uncomfortable being that it was a new procedure. I guess another option would be to go on birth control for a while until a more informed decision can be made. I would also be leery of your doc pushing one procedure over another the way they are.

I chose Essure, sounded so easy. That was three years ago, I am still uncomfortable with the decision, and feel like I got pressured from a doctor who was being courted by a big slick pharmaceutical company. Now I'm stuck with the coils, and it sounds terrible to get them out. And the other two doctors I've been to since haven't heard of it, so who is going to watch this and make sure nothing happens? I would get a tubal, if I were to do it all again.

I had the Essure procedure done 7 months after my last child in 6/05. I am so happy with the results. The initial implantation of the coils was unremarkable....no pain, no bleeding and no limitations whatsoever. You must follow up for a further diagnostic exam a min of 3 months later to make sure your tubes are 100% blocked. This test was mildly uncomfortable yet very brief. My advice to you would be to make sure that the doctor performing the procedure is experienced (ask for how many procedures he/she have performed). Overall, I am thrilled and have not had one single complication or regret. Check out www.essure.com for additional info or feel free to send me a PM if you have any further questions. Best of luck, Michelle

I have never heard of the Essure procedure, so sorry can't help you on that one. I have however had a tubal ligation following a c-section with my daughter. I wanted to say, I have had NO issues since having it. In fact monthly cramps & problems have improved quite abit since I had it.(It has been almost 17 mos.) I chose this opition due to the simplicity of doing the operation immediately following the c-section, and also due to my age, I really did not want to worry about becoming pregnant. It was the best option for me considering my circumstances. Good luck with your decision.
