Ear Infection After Ear Infection!

Hi Mommas!
My son will turn 2 next month and he has repeatedly been treated with antibiotics for ear infections. Just before he turned 1 we had tubes put in his ears because hearing tests showed that the persistent fluid in his ears would soon lead to hearing and speech delays. The pediatrician and the ear/nose/throat doctor told me that the tubes would not necessarily alleviate ear infections and they were both only recommending he have the procedure so he could hear. Fast forward now a year later and I feel like my son is being treated for ear infections every other week! He has had 2 in the last 4 weeks and I am afraid he has another one. I feel frustrated because my pediatrician says I cannot do anything to prevent them, but I am having a hard time with accepting that, especially since my son is getting the infections so often now. Help! Is there anything you have done to prevent / treat ear infections in your little ones?! At this point I am willing to try about anything. Thanks Mommas!

The only thing I can think of is maybe a chiropractor. I have heard many moms do this when their kids first start getting them and have worked. My daughter kept getting infections as well but the tubes worked for her. If my 2nd child have the same problem then I will try a chiropractor before tubes.

Drinking milk is the number one relation to ear infections in children. Try soy milk or something else, if he's on milk. Also, try taking him to an allergist.

I have scar tissue in both ears from ear infections as a child and teenager. I had the tubes, etc.

Good luck,
L.

I'd try a chiropractor. With regular visits my daughter has only had one ear infection and that happened during a time that our insurance didn't cover chiropractic care, as soon as I could change insurance I did and she hasn't had any more infections.

Well I give you what I found out going through a similar problem with my son. My son was having bouts with infections about every 4-6 weeks apart and having a speech delay. I finally took him to an ENT which wanted to put tubes in. I hesitated. I did some research on the subject on the internet. I found that most "infections" are just fluid build up and are prescribed antibiotics unnecessarily. Fluid alone can cause alot of discomfort but shouldn't cause fever if that's what you son is having. In the case of real infections, what can happen is a vicious cycle is created by putting them on antibiotics again and again causing the "infection" not to really resolve but grow stronger with each prescribed Rx. The infection becomes resistant to meds. What I would advise is that you seek a chiropractor that sees children. They can really help with adjustments and being able to look into the ear to keep "an eye" on how things are in there. You could try and put your son on Probotics and stop the use of antibiotics and let you son's body fight off the infection without drugs. It should get worse before it's gets better. What I ended up figuring out was that my son suffered allergies and that's what was triggering the ear problems. I ended up flushing his nose out every morning and night with a product called Neilmed that I got at Walgreens. When I said flush, I mean flush! He hated it at first and it was messy but soon we both got used to doing it. Then I put him on Zrytec daily and used a good milti vitamin and a powered Probiotic to help support his immune system. I also used a decongestant for about a week to help with the fluid build up. Within a week he was so much better it was shocking. After about a month I stopped doing anything and he was fine and has been since. Upon looking on the web I did find a chiropractor that did an ear lobe manipulation for helping the ear to drain properly. I did this too daily. That was over 8 months ago and we haven't had a problem yet.
I wish you the best and hope you can seek out "all" the alternatives to your son's problems.

We focused our efforts on avoiding congestion from allergies, dairy and colds. No congestion, no fluid in ears. We went to an allergist, gave up milk, got tubes and did not use group childcare (to avoid infections). Something (or all) worked. She grew out of getting ear infections by 3 and we started drinking milk again.

Hello, I was told by my friend that sell Shaklee products a remedy for ear infections. Take a onion and and squeeze the juice out of it and drop it in ear. about 2 to 3 drops and you can refridgate and repeat daily. I actually tried it for my son....when he had an ear ache and he said it worked. I also told another mom about it and she tried it on her husband and he said it worked as well.

I strongly suggest finding a chiropractor that has training in pediatrics. My son had a dozen ear infections before 1. He went to one visit just before turning 1 and has not had any more. He is now 3. The same is true for my youngest daughter although she had to have two initial adjustments. We now have made it part of our yearly exams and have kept ear infections at bay.

I know how you feel! My five year old had 22 ear infections by the time she was 2. We figured out it was allergies. Since we started treating her allergies she has only gotten one or two a year.

Hi Moms,

Instead of creating a new thread, I will just borrow E.'s (hope you don't mind) and ask for your help...

I have gone thru same dilemma several weeks ago and decided try out the most non-invasive way to treat the ear infection - Chiropractor. We went to see one Chiropractor, and she charged initial visit of $160.00 and asked us to go back for 12 more visits (3 visits/week) at $50.00 ea. Is this sound right to you all? Each visit, she spends about 2 minutes adjusting my daughter and that's it. I finally stopped going because 1.) it's pretty pricey; 2.) she said there's no guarantee.

Question is, how many adjustments did your babies had?
If you have a trustworthy chiropractor, do you mind share their contact informtion?

Thanks,
S.

I worked for a chiropractor for eight years and he treated hundreds of kids with ear infections. Adjustments do work, but alot of times it was as simple as removing all dairy products from their diet.
