Doctors Won't Help My One Year Old with Her Allergies

My daughter just turned 1 last week. She had colic and excema when she was first born. Her pediatrician thought she might have a protein allergy and put her on Nutramigen. We moved to another city and have been through five pediatricians now. Since coming off of Nutramigen and trying solids her excema has come back, she has a constant runny nose and a cough. She scratches so bad she makes her legs bleed. All the doctor's say here is that she has a viral infection. She has had severe symptoms since December and we can get no help. She is ppulled out of daycare at least every other week if not every week since December. Certain foods make her vomit. The doctor's here refuse to allergy test her. They keep saying it's because she is a daycare baby that she is sick all the time. When I tell them no one else in her room is sick they tell me that the other kids are immune (even though there is six week old babies in her room). I feel so bad for her and don't know what to do. I have taken her completely off of milk, but believe she may also have a soy allergy. I am not an overreacting mom. Daycare has been worried about her this whole time too. Please Help! Is there anything someone can reccomend? She has steroid cream for her excema, but we aren't supposed to use it very often. Her scratching wakes her up at night. We use sensitive soaps, deteregents, etc.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who wrote me. I went to a naturalpath and she did the blood test for allergies (looking to hear back any day). Also she started her on a homeopathic therapy, and she's doing a little better (I hope its not just wishful thinking). I'm on my way to ordering the melaleuca products. I have an appointment for her to see a GI specialist at the end of this month (as she may have acid reflux of celiacs disease as some of you mentioned). I went to yet another pediatrician. This time in Tucson and NOT Sierra Vista. He is trying to get to the bottom of it and actually listening. He put her back on formula (because she had hardly any problems when she was on Nutramigen). He reccommended going to the University to see a specialist for her digestive problems. Because of some of you and what you suggested, I had already made the call and got her a fairly early appointment.

Once I find out any more news I will update you all. IF the specialist doesn't help, then I may just take your suggestions and go into Phoenix. I have her an appointment finally with an allergist who will take her without a Doctor's recommendation. He is booked until October. So, hopefully she'll move up fast on the wait list. Thank you for all of your prayers, and at least I am moving forward at this time. I am on the fence whether or not to quit my job and stay home with her. I hate to see her this way. I cannot alter her diet without a Dr. note because how my daycare runs the food program. Daycare has been wonderful in trying to help me find a cause for her suffering. Thank you all again for your support and suggestions.

My family (including me) has had issues with eczema on and off. I would reccomend getting off wheat & sugar and using acidophilus (they make a powder form for babies). I also have a great homeopath who is also a lactation consultant.

I also recommand the Melaleuca products. If you live in or near apache junction, the doctors at Apache Junction Pediatrics listen to the parents. With their help I was able to get my daugther food allergy tested at 3months of age.

First I am just appalled that the doctors will not help. To me that would make me go to a TV station about how they are neglecting my child and her right to be taken care of and looked at by a doctor. Its too bad you don't live in New Mexico because my boss' son is very allergic to milk protein and have severe allergies to many seasonal things and mold and you name it. He has an allergist that he goes to every year to be tested to see what he is still allergic to as well as anything new. I really think you need to go to the head of the hospital or something. You child should not have to suffer like that.

J.,

You are her mom and you know better than the doctors. Keep looking for one until you find one that will test her and treat her with something that works. Trust your gut feeling and follow it. The mom is usually right and you know your daughter better than anyone! Good luck and keep looking :)

wow, sounds like a tough situation...my daughter was really sick, high fevers every weekend like clockwork...we went through so many tests and doctors and no one could help...i finally figured out that it was the chemicals in our carpet...
as far as eczema, i've had it all my life...my mom gave me creams, and baby oil baths, (big mistake)...as i got older friends tried giving me all these products from avon and other cosmetic companies and it made things worse...
i have learned that drinking beyond what i think i need in water each day is a way to prevent the breakouts.
i have learned that hot water showers and baths are out.
i have learned that i cannot wash a lot of dishes or keep my hands in water for long periods of time.
if i do have a breakout which i don't get them now almost at all and when i do i immediately bypass lotions, i use sesame seed oil or if not available olive oil. it relieves the pain almost immediately and in worst cases a day or so it's gone.
if you strongly feel like it is a food allergy, try cutting down her diet to plain, bland foods for at least a week, then start adding things once a week back into her diet so you can watch the reaction...it is a very hard process and will be harder being that she is in daycare.
patience and perseverance!

Have you tried TLC pediatrics? Website is www.tlcpedsaz.com They are wonderful. There is also an allergist right next door to them and my experience is all of the docs in the complex work incredibly well together. The complex is located at 16611 S. 40th St. right off of Pecos and the 202 so it is really convenient for us.

I hope this helps your little girl.

I also recomend Melaleuca products. They have helped my family with Eczema. But I would also suggest a naturopath physician we use Dr. Coleen Huber in Tempe they treat the child not the symptoms. You can try my website for info about Melaleuca products. www.livetotalwellness.com/arizona

Try joining the Yahoo group foodlab and running it by those folks. It's a group of people dealing with various allergies related to food, and they talk a lot about how food can exasperate eczema symptoms. The moderator just had a baby last night, I think, so it might take a bit before she can approve you to join and you can ask your questions, but I highly recommend it. Go to groups.yahoo.com and search for foodlab.

Coming from a super-allergy family, the first thing that struck me was soaps and detergents. Most "sensitive" ones aren't that sensitive. I know we cannot use over the counter ones without two of our members getting the itchy scratchies. I've been buying the Amway Bio-Quest and Tri-Zyme with great results for laundry (no, I don't sell it). We do not use typical cleaners either, and no artificial fragrances. You might want to try glycerin soap for bath time for a few days too. Please feel free to contact me and I'll try to help you out. Been there myself!!

HI J..
I have had the fortune of meeting a naturapathic doctor who performs kinesthetics (muscle testing) to help people identify food allergies and helpful/harmful supplements. This doctor has been a tremendous blessing to me in my life and has helped me alleviate health problems that no other doctor has been able to do. This is a non-invasive procedure without needles and is also effective with children. I am not sure what area you live in, but looking for someone who does muscle testing can quite possibly help you understand what is causing your daughter's allergies. Best wishes to you and your little ones!

J., go with your gut. Our insurance allows us to go to a specialist without a referral. You are the parent and it you want to take your daughter to the allergy specialist, you have every right. I would say with her severe symptoms of vomiting, it needs to be addressed. I just visited a specialist and they were very supportive and informative in the office as well as over the phone (the nurse spent 30 minutes talking about the problem with my 6 month old). The office I visited was of Darrell Wong of Arizona Allergy Associates (they have over 5 doctors in the practice and 4 locations) The East Mesa phone number is ###-###-#### and they are located on Baseline Road.

Hello J.,

My 3 1/2 year-old son has had mild to moderate excema since he was an infant and the pediatrician recommended gentle body washes/soaps such as Dove and Caress, Aveeno's Anti-Itch Cream w/1% hydrocortizone (used as needed), and a gentle moisturizer such as Keri Original Formula Lotion. I used Dreft and now use Gain, which has been mild enough after trying several. I use the rinse cylce twice on the kid's clothes...gentle fabric softeners such as Downy are helpful as well. With all the doc's advice and precautions taken, his skin condition has improved significantly. Certainly, there are different types of excema, therefore, different types of treatment. He was also prone to ear infections and so we switched from formula/regular milk to soy milk after taking him off breast milk. Sorry to hear your daughter is allergic to soy...not much help w/that one! As for allergies, he is currently allergic to peanuts and was recently diagnosed with an allergy to pollen (juniper and mulberry trees at this time) and his pediatrician prescribed three different medications...(1) Advair inhaler (2) Rynatan and (3)nasal spray. At first I thought it was overkill on the meds, but my son's allergies were severe enough to eventually justify them. He's doing great now and off the 4-week treatment of the Advair. I only give him the Rynatan as needed. It seemed to solve the current allergy problems for now. Our pediatrician also said that he is old enough to see an allergist. That's my next step. Hopefully, I've been of some help. Best of luck to your and your daughter!

Hi J.,

I have read some of the responses to your post and just wanted to add my support to some suggestions. First, Take your child to see a Naturopathic Physician, they are very well trained in conditions regarding foods. Second, there is a difference between food allergies and food Sensitivities. Just because your daughter is not getting hives or going into anaphylactic shock doesn't mean she isn't reacting to the food she is eating.

best wishes

It sounds like your doctors really aren't helping you out at all. Have you tried seeing an allergy specialist? I have a friend who's daughter is allergic to all dairy, nuts and eggs. She had the same type of problem at the beginning - no doctors wanting to test her. My friend had to get a bit nasty and see a specialist and tell the Dr. that they WERE going to test her. Sure enough she has severe allergies. Doctors sometimes don't know as much as we think they should but you really need to be your child's own advocate and speak up often enough and loud enough so that eventually, a Dr. will listen. It sounds like you are trying - you just need to find a Dr. to work with. I would maybe suggest calling an allergist or pediatric allergist and even if you have to pay for it yourself, just get them to do the test. If you choose that kind of Dr., that is their specialty and they should be more supportive.

Hope this helps - Good Luck!

Hi J.,
I am so sorry that they have put you through this. That is such a horrible feeling when someone who is suppose to help you won't. If you have a PPO you can go to an allergist anytime you like. If your Dr will not help you I suggest switching again. This time go in with the purpose of getting an allergy referral. I live in North Scottsdale and most of them are open to doing that. If you need help finding one I can help you. You are the mom and you know your child better than anyone! The allergist are fantastic.

Sorry to hear what you're going thru.
What products are you using on your baby? Try Arbonne's Pure Safe Beneficial Babycare Line, ABC. It works wonders for excema. This will clear up her skin condition for sure. It sounds like she is definately allergic to something. The docs HAVE to test her for allergies...My niece went thru a similar experience (and multiple pediatricians until one finally tested her..she turned out to be allergic to milk & cherries...she drinks almond milk instead) but she was older, around 3-4 when that happened. Its all cleared up now....so don't give up hope...I would just go to a Good Homeopathic Doc if I was you. They are much more Openminded re various causes & you are not having much luck with "traditional " docs.
I would be more than happy to send you Free Samples of Arbonnes Babycare Line. There is No Risk to trying out Arbonnes BabyCare Line as Arbonne has a 45 Day MoneyBack Guarantee.

Try changing pediatricians again, sorry. I have been using "the children's doctor" on 17th ave. & Glendale ave. for over 15 years with my kids (my parents took me there when i was younger as well!)and they referred my son to Dr. Morgan, an allergy doctor. He does have a very good reputation.

I've used oatmeal baths.(itchiness)
Cephacil soap.(daily cleaning)
Euricin cream.(Summertime)(and spray for itchiness)
Norweigian hand cream.(fingertips, daughter's were red)
Aquafor.(up the nose, to prevent nosebleeds)
I also did the dermetologist- major advice- wash body/hair in cool water and put a space heater in the bathroom to warm the air.

Hi J.,
My son had eczema caused by allergies and bad cradle cap when he was a young infant. This is what I did and was recommended by my pediatrician. Because I was breastfeeding, I had to drop these foods, so if you are still breastfeeding her, you will have to fallow this diet along with your daughter. For 3 weeks I didn’t have cow dairy, soy (soy is in a lot of food products, so read the labels carefully!), eggs, nuts, fish, citrus, wheat and gluten. These are all major allergens for young ones. After 3 weeks it should be out of her (your) system and the rashes should show major improvement. At this time, you can introduce one of these each week to see which foods she is allergic to. (Give a week between each food and make sure she clears up before introducing the next food.) We also gave him less baths (1 or 2 a week) with NO SOAP—even the sensitive skin ones. We did put baby oil in his baths and slathered him with Aqua Phor, which is like Vaseline, after the bath. (Dryness only aggravates the rashes, and moisture is the key!!) We also applied 1% Hydrocortisone on his rashes. Our pediatrician prescribed a 2.5 % Hydrocortisone for the really bad areas. We found out he is allergic to cow dairy (goat cheese is ok), wheat and gluten, and soy. It is a hard process, but so worth it. I hated seeing him itch all the time, and it certainly didn’t help with his sleeping. Try this….it can’t hurt. Good luck!

Hello~

I have a one year old who had eczema on her face as an infant as well as a severe gas problem. I was a breast feeding mom and I knew that I was eating something that was upsetting her system. I insisted that she be allergy tested at 3 months old and was given a referral. The allergist tested her and she was allergic to milk, egg yolks, soy and so on. I know that testing them at a young age is not always an accurate test, but my daughters eczema and gas went away. The gas was so intense that my baby would nurse for 4 and 5 hours at a time to get relief from the pain and would then scream in agony. I felt that at the time of my "research" symptoms of allergies vary, but I do know that eczema was a common symptom. I was told by my little ones allergist and G.I. doctors to leave her on her formula, alimentum, until she was a year and then test her for reactions of the different foods that she was showing allergies to. I hope that you are given a referral to an allergist! I would insist on it to see if you can get some relief for you little one.

I say you have to have her tested for allergies by a pediatric allergist. Will your insurance allow you to go directly to one on your own? If not, maybe you should find a new pediatrician who is more willing to take your concerns and motherly instinct into consideration. My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy shortly after his first birthday, and within a week of looking at labels and eliminating traces of peanut/nut from his diet, his excema disappeared and runny nose improved. Although peanut allergy is usually not outgrown, most other food allergies are, I believe. It's my understanding, though, that an important part of making that happen is to eliminate the allergen foods, and you can't do that if you don't know what they are! The Food and Anaphylaxis Network, www.foodallergy.org is a fantastic resource on food allergies. Good luck!

Hello,

I am a 34 year old mother of a 13yr. old son and a 14 month old daughter. My daughter has no allergies and no illnesses. My daughter was born with spina bifida who has a "sensitivity to latex" (allergy) and who also has excema. I completely understand your frustration, as my husband and I have had to do our own research on what foods/objects/toys/clothing contains latex. My daughter has cream for her excema also which she gets really bad on her chin and back. On the chin it can get so dry, pink, flaky and itchy if we do not constantly put cream on it and with her teething and the constant drool, it makes it worse. My suggestion for the excema is a wonderful all natural calendula cream by California Baby which is made specifically for excema and sensitive skin. You can apply it as often as needed and all over the baby, no smells, not greasy and really moisturizes and just zaps the rash! You will love it and can find it in a little tub for about $8-$10 at Wild Oats at Academy/Wyoming. Not all Wild Oats carries it. Also there is a calendula cream by Weleda as well, but doesn't work as well, but still highly recommended and it to can be found at health food stores!

Good luck!!!!

What a difficult thing you have been dealing with. I've never been through anything like it but if I were in your shoes I'd definately take my child to a homeopathic Dr., I would also take every "trigger food" out of her diet (diary, wheat, nuts, sugar, etc.) and then very slowly add them back into her diet until she has a reaction and you know what it is that sets it off. I hope you get some relief soon. One other thing, you might try cetaphil skin cleaner and lotion, my dermatologist recommends both for my family.

Your daughter maybe allergic to milk. My son had all the same issues you mentioned about your daughter and he was also on nutramigen. His excema got so bad that his doctor had him allergy tested at 6 months. Come to find out he is allergic to wheat/milk/eggs/nuts. There are also certain foods that cause him to scratch more than others. He can't tolerate blue berries/pears/bananas. These all cause him to itch. I would check with your insurance company and see if you can just take him to an allergy specialist without your ped sending you there. I would also start keeping a log of the foods she eats that seem to make her itch more and avoid them. Good luck!

You may want to consider taking her to a naturopath. There is a food allergy test, but it won't be covered by your insurance. The naturopath may not be, either.
Doctors are in the business of diagnosing an illness or disease and treating it with medication. Your child does not have a disease or illness, so they don't have much to offer you.
A Naturopath is concerned with the wellness of the whole person. Instead of treating symptoms, they look for the cause of the problem.
You will need to do some research on the doctors you choose. You must be your child's advocate and learn everything you can in order to work with her doctors toward wellness.
Blessings to you and your family.

Jamie,
There's a non steroidal cream call Atopiclair that is much safer to use. Also you can use a baby excema cream in between the Atopiclair application to keep her skin moist. You can buy the baby excema cream at any grocery store like Fry's or Walmart. It comes in a little white, green and pink tube with poor bear on the cover. The Atopiclair needs a doctor's prescription. My son struggled with excema and asthma for the longest time, not until he was like 17 months, we too him to arizona asthma and allergy, they gave him, singulair for his asthma and zertek for his allergies, and prescribed the atopiclair. We switched his lotions to Aveno and he has been doing 200 times better. He used to scratch himself til his ears bleed, and I used to have to hold him when he was younger to stop him from scratching. I hope this helps, I definite know where you're at, and I feel your pain. Let me know if there's anything I can help with.

I have to avoid soy which is very difficult since they put it in almost everything now. Please note that the anesthesia that is used now is made from soy. What you are going to need to do is remove soy from the diet, this is going to mean you need to ready every label on EVERYTHING. You can also make your own baby food, which is probably better anyway, but of course more time consuming. Also remember what an animal consumes stays in their food byproducts, such as meat, eggs, milk cheese etc. I this going to make a big change in your shopping, but is worth it. Good luck.

Where do you live? My ped has been really good at treating the kids, trying different things, etc. It does sound like allergies.

Do you need a referral with your insurance? If not, call them and see if they can give you an allergist to take her to.

My 5 mth old just saw a GI doc yesterday b/c he has been vomiting since birth. We have tried everything from changing my diet, 5 different formulas, etc. They think he has a severe protein allergy with reflux and are doing more tests to be sure that he isn't getting anything that may be irritation the allergy.

Good luck to you and your little one.

When we moved we switched three times and then I decided to find a private NP with her own practice who did not at all argue our situation. She then was able to recommend an allergist. (they all were very experienced mothers too!)

My son did the same thing and scratched his face till he bled, would not touch any food, could not sleep and would have slight asthma attacks. He never was able to sleep soundly because the itch would be stronger when he was tired. I had no idea what he was allergic to since he was mostly breastfed.
Doctors insisted he was not getting it through my breast milk. WRONG! He turned out to have a severe allergy towards nuts, dairy and egg. I only thought he was allergic to Dairy so I only omitted mostly that out of my diet. You really want to avoid having to give your child medication for excema and medication to sleep more.
I totally understand your pain and frustration. Sometimes I felt like people thought I was nuts and over reacting too.
Oh and my son will react to other peoples perfume. I had to tell all his care givers and grandparents to stop wearing perfume because they were poisoning him. You gotta do what you have to do.

Hi J.!

My name is T. S. and I am a newly pregnant mom to be but also I am a Naturopathic Doctor. It is often that children who have food allergies/sensitivies end up with your typical symptom of eczema, sinusitis/rhinitis, ear infections and especially gastric upset. So, you are on the right track with possible food allergens.

One of the best and easiest ways to test food allergies is through a food allergy panel. This is something that conventional medicine does not tend to do, not even the allergy specialist. In this test we test 96 different possible food allergens and look at the delayed sensitivity reaction (IgG). This means a reaction that happens several days after consumption and is difficult to pin point when just recording diets and symptoms. It is a blood test but can be done with a simple finger stick. Patients do great once the gut is healed and allergens are removed.

Also if you really think soy is the culprit, take it away and see how she does. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

I am so sorry for your problems. I am sure you probably know this but it is good to cover all the basis. There is a chemical that is in many products called Propylene Glycol. It is actual Anti Freeze. It makes the skin feel soft and moist. It is in many foods, vitamins, shampoos, toothpaste etc. It is hard to find even natural products without this in it. It has been linked to eczema and dermatitis.

Other than that I would make it my job (which I am sure you have ) to find a Dr to help me.

Steroids cause the skin to become very thin and all they do is push the problem back into the system and do not really cure anything.

Being a very natural person I would seek out a good naturapath

Good Luck

Hi J. -

Have you tried any herbal formulas? Calendula and St.John's Wort as a skin salve may help with the itching and healing of the excema. Echinacea may help boost her immune system and in turn lessen the allergy symptoms. Rescue Remedy (Bach Flower Essence) is very good with balancing the emotional body, which is often the cause behind the original development of excema. An individualized formula would probably be more effective, however, without a full medical history, it's hard to tell you more.

Hi J.,
Ok so this is a stretch, but when you said that some foods make her vomit I thought of my grandma and her "allergy". Does your daughter get the runs?? My grandma was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue before it was really known about. Celiacs is an "allergy" to glutens. It is actually an auto-immune disorder, but easier to call an allergy when explaining to people... It would take me a day to type out what I know about this disease, but you can get more info at several online sites. Maybe take wheat out of her diet and see if it helps. It is not easy as wheat or wheat by-products can be in almost everything (even black licorice) It goes beyond wheat though... distilled vinegar, barley, oatmeal... My parents and grandma have been eating a wheat free diet since 1990 and now it is easy. Health food stores now carry so many options for gluten free food it is crazy. (not all of them taste good though and my grandma refuses to eat them) My grandma can now even have pancakes, she makes special bread, and can have special cookies. Which actually are pretty good. Check out www.csaceliacs.org it has TONS of info!! Please let me know if you decide to try this diet and I can get you some tried and true recipes from my grandma. At least you know they will taste good.

I have also used Melaleuca products and they are great! I LOVE the Renew lotion. I have severly dry hands that crack and bleed... If I am consistant about putting the Renew lotion on every night before bed I don't have a problem. In fact I can actually see improvement over night. It is great lotion!

Good luck and God Bless!

Hi J.,
It's amazing that doctors don't equate food intake with skin allergies! My son and a friends daughter has also suffered from exema. There are a few food as well as dairy to try and eliminate such as, wheat, corn, oats, and eggs. There of course could be so many other things but these foods are a coming allergy source. Also, I recommend going to a Naturpathic doctor if you have one in your area. We found out (the hard way) that my son is allergic to polyester (a lot of the jammies are made with polyester) and he breaks out in severe itchty hives. Good luck to you!

Dear J.,
Please continue to do what you are doing and try to find out what is going on with your angel. My husband is a doctor and not all doctors have the answers and instead of sometimes telling you this, they refer you other places or make you think your crazy or over-reacting. The bottom line is a mom knows when something is wrong most of the time. I am not sure what state you live in, but some states license naturopathic doctors, or even a chiropractor that is into nutrition or other aspects besides adjustments, maybe able to help. If you can find a doctor who is willing to find out what is causing these symptoms versus just wanting to deny them or cover them up, you may be on to something to help your child.
Food allergies or sensitivities can have big effects on your child. Some of the most common allergies are dairy, gluten, soy, etc. Steroids also suppress the immune system making it more difficult for your child to fight off illness, if exposed. If you live in Arizona and want a physician reference for a naturopathic pediatrician, let me know. The treatments can be much more effective and easily resolved and not very expensive.
Best of luck to you,

Hi There,
I would consider taking your child to an Osteopath who specializes in Cranial Sacral work and homeopathy.
My son was born with what seemed like a ton of allergies. No doctor could diagnosis it. One Dr even said he would need experimental surgery, at which point I picked my son up and left the office.
We found an amazing Osteopath and he found somethings that were going on and once they were adjusted my sons symptoms were gone!
An Osteopath who also specializes in homeopathy would be your best bet, he could treat your child naturally and keep chemicals out of her system.
A good DR. in Tucson is Teresa Cisler, email me for her number.

J.,
Have you tried a natropathic MD. We has a similar situation with my now 6 year old daughter. She has chronic vomitting and diarrhea snce she was about 2 1/2. She was tested vor all kinds of things all negative. They decided that she had a poor immune system to the stomach flu. It just became a "deal with it" response. Our friend referred us to a natropathic MD. By seeing a natropathic MD, we were able to allergy test her without needles and get clear answers to her problems. She is not able to eat wheat, gluten, msg, or corn. Her symptoms are completely gone, and she is much happier. We were amazed to learn by watching her change that it was also hindering her ability to concentrate in school and causing her to be overly emotional. While seeing a natropathic MD may not give you all the answers you need, it may be a step to understanding your little ones' needs.

I have only been able to find this milk at Wal-Mart, Safeway and Fry's. It is stocked near the soy milk products.

My son just turned 1 on April 1st. He has been seeing a dermatologist since he was 3 months old due to severe eczema. It has been a constant nightmare. On April 5th he had a severe allergic reaction and was given epinepheryn. We went to see an allergist, Dr. Mark Rose, and the doctor gave him the "prick" test. We have learned about all the things he is allergic to and one of the big ones is milk and peanuts, along with others. Since taking him off the things that he is allergic to, his skin has cleared, the runny nose has stopped and he is doing much better. He was so miserable. I'm suggesting that you contact an allergist on your own and pay for it out of pocket in order to get your little one tested. It is SO WORTH IT!!! Good luck. J.,

What you are describing sounds like dermatitis herpetaformis (DH). It is not a food allergy, but rather an autoimmune disorder. It is related to (or rather an outward sign of )Celiac Disease and happens when the patient eats foods containing gluten (a protein in wheat, rye, barley, and oats). The body's reaction to gluten is to attack it within the intestine, and it can cause vomiting, sometimes diarrhea, sometimes constipation, and certainly can cause severe eczema. An allergist may or may not test for it, but it involves a biopsy of the eczema. Get a referral to a pediatric GI doctor and go as soon as you can. GI docs will WORK with allergists, so that should be your first step. You can contact me directly if you have questions...and good luck J.!

My daughter has severe allergies as well she is now 6. They have to be or reccomend kids be at least 5 before allergy testing. I know it sounds crazy but the wait is good. In the mean time everytime you give her something watch her and see if anything happens. Bumps under her lip that are red and itchy or anything that is different withing 1 hr. Then write that food down so when you do get her tested you can tell them to add that food in her serum. It is dangerous to give kids shots that young you just have to bear it. I would totally reccomend Zyrtec over the counter now yeah!!!! Our whole family takes it. You need to ask your doctor how much you could give her. It is safe and will help her I promise. Don't stop on finding the correct dose even if you have to try 10 doctors. My daughter still takes it with her shots, and even today we are showing signs of allergies and asthma. You should try to possibly get into a allergest doctor, if your Primary won't help her. Hang in there and keep a journal of her foods. I would be courious if she is allergic to Strawberries? Let me know if she gets bumps under the chin red and itchy? E.

Hi J.,

I know many people prefer medical doctors and those that do, seem to be skeptical of non-medical docs (I'm one of them). My nieces both have eczema and my SIL took them to a chiropractor to be allergy tested. One was found to be allergic to peanut oil, the other to eggs. They were both treated with a system called NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques)and are now fine. I took my daughter to be tested after her ped. told me that she's probably not allergic to eggs because she handled the flu shot fine. BUT, my husband and I always notice she gets hives and red spots all over her face after eating them. Sure enough, she tested positive to the egg through the NAET system. We are going to have her treated. Your young child can be treated through you. It sounds strange, but after reading up on it and talking to the chiropractor, it really does make sense.

You'd just have to find a chiropractor in your area that uses this technique if you want to try it. I chose to try it because I couldn't see putting my 1 year old through the prick test and figured I'd try the non-invasive first and if it didn't work, no harm no foul, I'd take her to an allergist.

Hope you're able to figure this out and get the docs to listen to you. I'll say a prayer for your little one. I had severe eczema as a child/teen and still suffer with it today, not fun.

Hi J.,I know your little daughter must really feel miserable. My daughter was allergic to the material in her baby blanket. She's grown up now and has allergy flare-ups. She was tested & is allergic to many things-grass,dust, pollen, certain materials, etc. She chose not to get the allergy shots every month for the rest of her life, cause of time & money. She takes benadryl.I'm pretty sure they have that in doses for children.Ask your dr. & the pharmacist where you take your precriptions. If the pediatrican won't help, take your little girl to a reg. family dr.Rashs & sick stomachs can be caused by nerves too.I can be in a house or outside & smell mold & get instantly sick at my stomach & almost vomit, also get a terrible headache.I also get an instant rash if I touch wool or fleece (fleece comes from wool).Alot of blankets, jackets, sweaters, etc. are made of fleece. It feels really soft, but it can be very bad if you're allergic. Some people adults & children are allergic to cleaning supplies like pine sol & room deodorant sprays.Baby wipe, baby powder, etc. need to be the unscented kinds. It may take alittle while to discover what or how many things your baby girl is allergice too,but she really needs help soon. Also, are you using unscented fabric softener in your clothes.Anything scented or perfumed could be the problem. If you have pets.Pets have dander on their skin & hair that can cause allergies.I think that a "good" dr. could prescribe some benadryl-a dosage that's right for a small child and some cream or medicated lotion that you could rub on her after her morning & evening baths.Hope you can check out the things I mentioned & hopefuly find the problem.Constant itching & scratching until you bleed is terrible. My dr. prescribes triamcinolone cream.Maybe, washing her off with some epsom salts water would help. Some people say that helps the itching.Good luck.Hope you find the problem soon. There are "good" doctors out there.Sometimes, they're just a little hard to find.Pharmacists have helped me alot in the past also.Ask a couple of them what they would suggest.

My daughter is almost 7 and has very bad eczema and often has a runny nose, sneezing, cough and swollen tonsils. The ped. treats the symptoms but doesn't seem to look beyond them to find the underlying cause. The eczema started just over a year ago, on her foot first. Now it's covering half her back as well. I suspect it may be a food allergy, but I didn't want to put her through the skin-prick test my allergist suggested (she did when she was 2 1/2 and it was the longest 30min. in our lives since she cried through the whole thing - she tested positive for mold, mildew and cat allergies at that time) so I took her to a wellness clinic held at the Basha's grocery store here in Tucson. She had a blood test done for the allergies. She tested mildly positive to the mold, mildew, some weeds and pollens, eggs, corn, tomato, peanuts, and strawberries. In the past she also reacted with hives to chocolate, but the test didn't show it, probably b/c she hasn't eaten it in so long. So then we took her off all the foods she reacted to for two weeks, and it was remarkable how clear her skin got (although not all the way gone, most of it did clear up) and have now begun adding them back one by one (with one day in between 'test' days) So far she has tried eggs (slight flare up), corn (big flare up, esp. with corn syrup), peanuts (okay), chocolate (okay - we think before she may have reacted to the combo of cocoa and corn syrup in the brownies and pudding she reacted to), strawberries (mild flare up). We still need to test tomatoes. We may also try taking her off milk for awhile, then do the food challenge test to see if that makes a difference. Unfortunately corn-derived products are in a lot of foods (I have a 2 1/2 page list of things that are, or can be, derived from corn!) so it's almost impossible to completely avoid them, so we still have to control flareups from 'accidental' exposure. We have found that the steriods are okay for really bad flare ups, but we prefer using pure aloe vera (from our plant growing in the backyard) - it's natural antiseptic, natural moisturizer, non-stinging gel really soothes her skin - especially if she scratches till it bleeds, and seems to help the wounds heal faster than with anything else.
We have a PPO health ins. so we don't need referrals from the PCP, so I'm looking for a dermatologist or allergist who can help us figure out if there's anything else we can do to help her without having to give her any more meds (she take Singulair for nasal allergies). I'm also looking into alternative medicine options as well.

Hi,

Try going to this website: http://www.wellnesshealth.com/default.asp?id=162. It's Wellness Pharmacy and they have a lot of good advice for more natural remedies. They talk about the toxins in the environment and in our homes and how they affect us. Also, try going to a naturopathic doctor. There's a link on their website to look up doctors. You could probably do a search on the internet for your area. Naturopathic doctors look at the whole child and discuss the sources of the problems and not just the symptoms. My mom always took us to these type of health professionals. Our naturopathic doctor recommended that we give my daughter goat's milk instead of soy or dairy and she's doing very well. But, she talked to us a lot about her diet. I used to have excema until I started using all natural cleaning products. Anyway, hope some of this helps.

How terrible. We give our son cod liver oil every day (1 tsp. - flavored orange or lemon) seems to help his excema along with Moisturel lotion (found at Walgreens). The lotion really does make a difference. Any time I try to switch to something else, his excema breaks out again. Good luck.

J.,
I know how you feel. When my husband was in the Navy, they would not even think about putting tubes in my daughters ears. She had 18 ear infections in one year. When he got out of the Nave we moved back here and got the same song and dance from our Family Practisioner. We have since moved our daughter to the most wonderful Pediatrician's office that I have found. It is called Cactus Children's Clinic. i don't know where you are, but it is on 51st Avenue and Cactus. If that is close or at least close enough you would be willing to drive there their phone is ###-###-####. I promise that they will listen and be very attentive. My daughter is in Daycare and they have never used that as an excuse for her illness. She has been tested for allergies. I totally get where you are comming from. I hope that this helps. If not, you might call Cactus Childrens and see if they can recomend someone closer to you.

I know of a wonderful team of pediatric Dr.'s that service many of the children within Hacienda HealthCare(Skilled Nursing Facility for infants, children and young adults).
Many of our nurses who work at Hacienda take their children to these Dr.'s. They have been working with children for a very long time and see alot of different diseases and conditions and know how to treat them. I just took my sister's child there last week and my kids have appointments this week to see Dr.Gerald H. Golner, M.D., F.A.A.P.
One of the nursng Directors spoke to me just last week and was telling me that she was seeing Dr. Golner for her childs allergies and he was amazing. I was impressed and I would give them a try for your child. I guess he has more than one office in the valley. I went to the one on 19th Ave and Glendale. Here is the link below. I was told that Dr. Golner is the best of all of them or his son Brad. Good Luck!

Hello J.,

I'm not sure this will help, but I hope so. I took my son to the doctor becuase he was scratching so much that he was bleeding and it was worse at night. it was excema they told me and a virus that he was spreading when he scratched, and gave us a cream to put on it, I told him back becuase it helping and they said the same thing. SO I finally took him to a dermatologist and finally got some results. we went through a few medications, but the one that worked for us was a compound called c-triamcinolone in vanicream 0.003% CRM. It was about 40 dollars for the jar and we put it on about three times a day. We also had already done the things you have with only dove soap, oatmeal baths, no softners, cutting nails and making sure they were clean, also put petrolem jelly on thier finger nails at night so the scratching would rub off on his skin, and putting long sleeves and long pants on(he was only 2). After 5-8 months of doing this his excema got a lot better. Try to find a child dermatologist to help with some things.

Also, My son was lactose intolerant, and he had to drink soy milk for a long time. The formula's and the cows milk can be hard for the children to digest. My daughter we just found out (9months old) is also lactose intoralent ( not surprised!). Another thing we just changed over to is more organic foods, I buy the organic baby food and i haven't had any problems with allergies. You can also make your own baby food from organic products and freeze them in mass quantities since you work and are short on time and can't do it everyday. You are not the only one out there with these same problems, doctors can make you sound crazy.

My son with the excema was my first and they kept making it sound like daycare was making have excema and that I should keep checking with the providor to make she wasn't giving him stuff she wasn't supposed to, but once I went to the Dermatologist they really treated my son and I with valid complaints and gave us a lot of suggesting for avoiding and helping the actual problem. My son hardly gets the bumps now and when they start we know how to handle it. I really hope this helps and if live in phoenix, az, I can recommend the dermatologist we when to. GOOD LUCK

My children all had severe allergies and my doc wouldn't allergy test them either. He just wanted to medicate them. I had to figure it out myself and I did. It took a lot of work and patience but it was well worth it. Taking your daughter off of milk products is an excellent start. And soy products may aggrevate her condition as well. I would take her off of all the usual allergy products. Dairy, soy, gluten/wheat, eggs, peanuts, corn. Do that for a week and see if there is a change. There are other things she may react to I'm just listing the ones MY kids reacted to. My kids weren't allergic to fruits and veggies but your daughter may have some of those. Try her on rice milk (original not vanilla) with cereal. Rice and chicken and veggies is what I always started with. Make sure she is getting good vitamins. Melaleuca (the Wellness Company) sells excellent lotion great for excema. They also have great vitamins that have maximum absorption. Go to Melaleuca.com. You get a 30% discount if your a member but anyone can order from them, it just costs more. But their products are outstanding. They also have safe laundry, dish, a cleaning products...I had excema for more than 12 years and their Renew lotion has really helped me. I only use it once every 24 hours and it lasts. You can also try the elimination diet to figure out how to figure out what food she is allergic to. Unfortunately, doctors aren't the most helpful in trying to figure out what your child is allergic to. Email me if you have any ____@____.com I hope this has been helpful. Good luck and many blessings...

Hey J.,

I was in the same boat as you with the whole eczema thing. My son scratched all night long and he got HUGE open soars on his legs! I have the steroid cream but it BURNS when you put it on and since he is now almost 4 he runs and hides. So here is what I did...I use ALL Melaleuca products...they have NO harsh chemicals in them what so ever and they have an oil called Melaleuca Oil and it works miracles! I have been using all their products for about 2 years now and it saves me money and I dont have to worry about the kids being around the cleaning stuff. I completely switched everything over from laundry items to cleaning supplies to bath and beauty products (especially their RENEW lotion which is clinically proven) and even some all organic food. I have seen an amazing turn around in not only my sons skin but all of our skin including my extended family...everyone is hooked! You can also bath her in baby oil (I just squirt it into the bath and let them soak) or after the bath just cover her in pure vasaline. I know it sounds gross and a pain to put on but it helps keep the skin moisturized and it doesnt itch.
Our next step is to get him allergy tested as well. Why are the peds not allowing the testing? Do you need a referal or can you seek it out independantly since it sounds very important to you. I know the second my son gets a runny nose it turns into a bad sinus infection or bronchitis so he has been on antibiotics every couple of weeks since last summer.
I also do daycare and one of my kids had a sensory disorder where certain food made him vomitt as well as smells and he just got allergy tested and was severely allergic to animals and now he is doing great on meds. I would have a hard time believeing that she is getting so sick from daycare. Especially if it is a large facility since they are very stict with their sick policy! I know even in my very small childcare my parents have to bring a note back from the dr saying all is well...we never have kids sick here!
Hang in there! I of all people know how frustrating it is! I am having a MOMMIES ONLY MELALEUCA night at my house this Sat. at 7pm if you are interested in learning more about the products, there will be a couple moms that I met on this site here and a couple from one of my mommies play groups. Let me know! Oh and I dont sell this stuff...so its just an info meeting and a chance to meet other mommies!

Hi J.,
Wow..I am so sorry to hear of your little baby girl's suffering. I went through almost the same thing with my daughter. She had colic and eczema as well. We were in the military at the time so the naval docs said it was colic and that she will outgrow it. The eczema they gave me an ointment to put on her skin..but it didn't really help it all. I used the cortozone creams but the drs. got upset w me cause i used it too much. But she would crawl and rub her wrists and ankles on the carpet so much they would bleed.
Well as she got older we were constantly running to the ER cause she was having breathing problems. They would always tell me she had an upper respiratory infection. But I couldn't take it anymore. When she was 4 yrs. old i was seeing a new dr. and they referred her to an allergy and asthma specialist. Well come to find out she had a severe allergy to cats. And my mother-in-law had 4 cats *(she watched my daughter mon-fri.). So I was killing my daughter and didn't even know it because of all the misdiagnoses. She is now 7 and her breathing is so much better. She still has eczema. We keep trying different cremes. Eucerin has been the best for her. We also have noticed that dogs break her outt real bad too. So I would find a new dr. Or try and get a referral to see a specialist. Because there is obviously something more going on with her. I don't think your overreacting one bit. It is really terrifying when you feel it's out of your hands and no one wants to help.
