Constipation for My 2 Year Old

My 2 year old never had issues before but now has severe constipation and we are trying some medicine for it and cutting back on binding foods but I was wondering if anyone had a great solution that they have used before. She is on to us when we try and give her the meds and does not go for that at all. I would love to hear your suggestions.

What can I do next?

I use Fiber Choice tablets with my son (who has always had problems with constipation). I use the Sugar Free chewable tablets which you can get at Wal-Mart. He thinks they taste like candy (they taste like a large Smartie), but we tell him they are a vitamin... so he know he can only have one!

Prunes, Prunes and more prunes. Try the juice first. Then you can try the actual prunes and if she doesn't like that sneak some prune baby food into her normal food.

For a quick reflief.. fix some instant grits; you can add jelly or a little sugar for taste. This also works for adults.

There are a few old fashioned things you can do. Feed her lots of fruit. Grapes, oranges, berries. NO Bananas! Make sure she gets lots of fluids. Lay off of starches like rice and potatoes and cut back on cheese. Fresh corn on the cob is a great alternative. Raw veggies are good for snacks. If your child eats oatmeal for breakfast add a tablespoon of bran to it, stir it up real good and she will not notice.

Have your daughter lay on her back and do bicycle peddling. Have her keep her legs as close to her body as possible. I used to lay down with my daughter and we would have "bike races" to see who could peddle the fastest. Hope this helps, may take a day to get things moving.

When my baby got constipated, the pediatrician told us to use dark karo syrup. It apparantely has a natural laxative in it. Just mix 1-2 teaspoons of dark karo syrup with 1-2 oz of water and let your child drink it. It worked really well for me! The best part is, your child will enjoy it. I gave my son the karo syrup solution twice a day until he became regular again. Good Luck!

We added a teaspoon of Benefiber to my dd's milk everynight for months and months. She never noticed the taste and would even remind us to add the "sugar" sometimes.

It wasn't until we took her off of dairy completely that she finally got normal bm's. You definately should try to add more fiber to her diet and make sure she is drinking enough fluids (water).

Good luck.

Hello.

I have been there. I have a now 3 year old that had the same issues. We found it started during potty training. Myralax is by far the best and cheapest way to go. My baby has been on 6 different medicines for this issue and the Myralax works best. She still refuses to poop on the potty, we think she relates pain to the whole ordeal.

Good luck.

You need to google "yeast overgrowth" and read up on that to see if any of the symptoms apply. Kids eat lots of dairy and sugar thus making them more susceptible to yeast & constipation. We use a chewable acidophyllis for our kids. We crush it and put it in a bite of yogurt or pudding or peanut butter. Ours get it daily to keep the amount of "good" bacteria elevated in their intestines, thus promoting an active bowel.

My 3 year old was the same way. I worried so much I took him to the pediatrician. This is what he told me. Little ones sometimes don't have their brains programed to "go" at a specific time, so they just don't go. You have to help train them. Get her on the potty about 20 min after dinner. Keep her there for as long as she can stand, (read a good book, let her play with her favorite toy, etc.) I had to put my son on Adult Fleet for 3 days to clean him out, and he is on Myralax for 3 months, (stool softener). He is able to go on his own and is real proud of it. My concern comes when the three months are up. I hope I will have trained his brain enough. Good luck!

Pear and apple juice have lots of pectin. This will help with regularity without meds or physical stimulation. Don't be scared to give you child an enema. They can be necessary and very helpful. Also a two year old has done a lot of falling. If the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis are jammed then the colon will not be happy. I would suggest finding a good Chiropractor and getting the child's pelvis and low back adjusted. Sometimes after a pelvic adjustment people have to go to the bathroom immediately. My kids have never been on any kind of medicine for anything. They any and all fruits and vegetables raw or cooked. We have never had to restrict any dairy. They get adjusted for colds, constipation, ear infections, whatever comes up.

Our 5YO daughter was diagnosed with chronic constipation. We tried to modify her diet but it was difficult to eliminate dairy - her favorite. We now use Miralax in our daughter's apple juice that she drinks every morning to aid the BM process. She's old enough to know that there is medicine in her juice, and she also knows that it will make going potty easier and less painful, so she doesn't mind it. Good luck!

Fruits that start with the letter "P" help with constipation. When my son was younger we had a problem with it as well. Our pediatrician's nurse told us to feed him fruit that started with the letter "P" because as a rule those helped loosen the stools more, such as peaches, pears, plums, prunes...

The best thing you can do for your little girl is to get her to drink more water. Cut way back on the amount of milk she is drinking. If you can get her to drink hot water in the morning that will help even more. I was so constipated as a child I would go for two weeks and end up with a fever.
I have been able to help kids at camp with the hot water trick.
The quantity of water is key to ending constipation.

All the best, K.

Try Miralax - 1/2 lid mixed in juice or whatever she prefers to drink. Sometimes I have to use a full lid. Ask your pediatrician for dosage. It is OTC and in a purple and white bottle. It works. My 3 yr old has to take it a lot. She is constipated almost every week. We also give her raisins, popcorn and apples or applesaucse almost every day along with Activa yogurt..she loves the vanilla kind but it comes in several flavors. And finally, she drinks a LOT of baby apple prune juice....good luck!

I have a daughter who has always had this problem. She is now 10 and wound up in the hospital a year ago impacted! Very painful, but avoidable. (At leaset, now I know it was avoidable.) Here are things I have to rotate with and I don't know if your daughter is too young for some of it...obviously a good diet like you have her on, then try...prune juice, (just a little will do), childrens suppositories, colaise, and give her some Omega oils. You can get it in a liquid form at a health food store and they are flavored. Give her a half tsp or less each day to grease her up! Keep the bottle cold to make it taste better. The one I use is by Nordic Naturals and it's called childrens DHA. It's in a blue bottle and I get it at Betsy's Health Food on 1950. (Near the corner of 1960 and Champion Forest Drive ~ right behind Pier One and next to The Outback Steak House.) ###-###-####. They are very helpful with this.

Dried prunes and raisins!!!!! They are a real treat here at my house! I have to make sure that they kids don't eat too many though(or we'll end up with the opposite problem of what you have)!!!! My youngest will be 2 in December, and he LOVES prunes!!! They're healthy and, they keep him very regular!!!! I love them, too! You could also try fresh plums, apples, and oranges. We buy clementines any chance we get, because they are sweet, juicy, and the perfect size for little people. (Not to mention they taste GREAT!) Any of these should help with the constipation! Hope this helps!!!!

The dried plums, prunes, or apricots, are a good idea. Apple juice can go either way. So try it and watch for results. If milk products gives her the runs it is probably Lactose intolerence. To clean her out my parents used to give us greens spinach, etc., of different forms and then a piece of choc. This was for a complete colon cleanse.

I had issues with all 3 of my kids having constipation or real painful poops but I did not want to use a medication. The solution for all 3 of them has been Juice Plus. My oldest son (6) takes the capsules (which are vegetarian capsules) and my middle (4) and youngest (18 months) take the gummies. They are just fruits and veggies juiced down and they work like magic. You can order them off the website www.juiceplus.com. I told my youngest that the gummies were candy and they could only have them as treats and they have no idea they are just fruits and veggies. I told my oldest they are "superman" food and I mix the powder in his applesauce, peanut butter or anything that isn't touched by high heat. Check it out - it has worked wonders for all 3 of my kids.

I give my daughter prunes. The ones that come individually wrapped. When she was younger, she thought they were candy. Now, she likes them. Also you can use myralax. Ask your local pharmacist. You can get it over the counter. It has no flavor or color. You just mix it with 8 oz of anything. Koolaid, milk, soda (anything but plain water) works. You have to work with it to adjust the dose to fit your daughter. I also have and continue to use Benefiber. No flavor or color and you can stir it into anything you feed her.

Kashi cereal is a really good fibre rich cereal. The one with the little hearts and o's. They look like cheerios. They have a naturally sweet taste but not sugar-like. The mini wheats in the Kashi brand that are cinnamon are really good too. Again little sugar. This may sound far fetched but my 4 year old picky picky eater loves them and it has worked wonders on her constipation. Just make sure your little one is getting plenty of fluids to go along with the fibre. Also, when ever she does poop, really really praise her. My daughter has been very much into her privacy during this period of time as well. Standing over them to watch if they poop can be very daunting for them and not very relaxing. They have to feel relaxed to let go. Good luck! You will do great!

We had the same problem when we were potty training our 3 yr old son. The pedi prescribed Miralax. We tried different juices, fruits and nothing seemed to help. Miralax can also be bought over-the-counter. It is a favorless powder that can be mixed with any type of liquid. It draws water into the intestines to make looser stools but the body doesn't absorb it. So it can be used longterm if needed. It works great. We are now having constipation problems with our 20 month old, so now we use it on him. Try it out, it works great.

Hi J.,

When my daughter was younger (a toddler), she also suffered from constipation (big time!). The best remedy that worked for her was prune juice. Surprisingly, she loved it! I would put it in her sippy cup and she drank it without any problems, so I gave it to her regularly.

This was before Benefiber came on the market. Nowadays, if she is ever constipated, we just add Benefiber to her fluids (juice, water, etc.). Benefiber is tasteless and odorless. Works great for adults too on a daily basis.

Hope this helps!

You may want to try pure pear juice. It is sold in the isle at the grocery store where the Mexican style foods and ingredients are sold. It comes in a can (like a coke can). You may also want to try Miralax. It is a bit expensive, but worth it. You can add this to any drink and it is colorless and tastless. My son has had this problem since he was born and this is what the ped. recomended. It does not cramp the stomach and you do not have to use it every day. Just when needed. Best of luck!
