I used cloth diapers on my youngest son. It was a lot easier than I anticipated. Washing and drying the diapers wasn't a big deal. I used a dry pail with a cloth liner and washed it all every other day. My biggest problem was the fit of the diaper under his clothes, especially in jeans. My favorite brand was Thirsties and Bum Genius was a close second. Thirties was a slimmer diaper and you could stuff it with extra inserts when needed. I really preferred the Bum Genius Organic AIO over the other Bum Genius diapers. A big bonus of cloth diapering for me was my son was completely potty trained in 2 days at 21 months old.

In my experience, cloth diapers were a lot of work, but very cute. I felt good using them, but after a few months I couldn't keep up with the laundry. I recommend using diaper liners that you can throw away or flush. They really do take a lot of the mess out of the diaper, it's kind of amazing how well they work. I also liked g-diapers. When I ran out of g-diaper liners, I used regular cloth diapers inside of them and it worked fine. I liked using the cloth diapers that look like burp cloths inside plastic pants with velcro in the front. Good luck to you! I used disposables with my first, and switched to cloth with my second baby at about 5 months old. It has been much easier than I anticipated, the poops aren't always fun, but they aren't with disposables either! I use fuzzibunz, after trying a few other brands. I do use a disposable at night....since my son sleeps 12 hours and I have not heard of a solution for that, and admit I am chicken to mess up night time sleep! Good luck, I recommend it for sure. My husband even prefers the cloth! Now that I switched, the disposables seem papery and uncomfortable to me, I much rather but his little tushy in the cozy cloth ones!

I am currently cloth diapering my fourth baby. I am using the same diapers I bought when my first was born, so the savings are huge by now. I have 2 sizes of chinese prefolds (the smallerm size has dark green stitching on the ends and the bigger size has blue), I have 24 of each size. I have used several different brands of covers, I like thirties, proraps, and mother-ease. For my 4 month old I have about 6 covers that I rotate through. I am exclusively breastfeeding, so laundry really isn't that bad. I keep the wet and soiled diapers in my DiaperChamp and wash them about two (occasionally three) times per week. I don't dunk or rinse ahead of time, just dump them in the washer and run a cold rinse cycle. Then I wash on hot with baking soda and a touch of a free & clear detergent, and add a little white vinegar to the rinse. I love to hang them in the sun to remove stains, but that is harder to do in the winter. To avoid using pins, I have these Snappi closure things. Pretty cheap and work great, I have had the same two snappis since I bought my cloth diapers. I also bought 6 hemp inserts (typically used with pocket diapers) to use as doublers at night, along with strips of fleece to keep the moisture off his skin. I love cloth diapering and encourage you to give it a try.

I've been using a diaper service since my twelve month old was born. They recommended starting out with 80 pre-folds a week and I gradually decreased the amount as he got older. We are now receiving 40-50 diapers a week. I love not having to wash them -- just throw them in the bag they provide and then leave it outside on my delivery day. They pick up the dirty ones and leave clean ones for you. The diaper covers we use are gDiapers. We just fold the pre-fold in three and insert. If the liner gets soiled I just snap a clean one in. At night I like to use Thirsties and double up the cloth.
A friend of mine recommended cutting 100% wool into rectangles. Wool absorbs an amazing amount of liquid which is why you will see wool covers and pants as you're searching online. I haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to keep the babies cool and dry. It also makes flushing the solids much easier since it glides right off although you can also use bio-liners on the cloth which are very thin and can be flushed.
