Cloth Diaper Cream

So i have recently switched to cloth diapers and am very happy with my decision. I have been warned not to use diaper cream while using cloth diapers due to it making them water proof. I didn't worry with it because you don't usually have problems with diaper rash while using cloth diapers. However, it has become necessary for me to use diaper cream. So, moms, what shall I use? What has been tried and true for you all out there using cloth diapers? Thanks for your invaluable insight as always!

What can I do next?

I never used cloth, but my daughter would break out if I used regular wipes -- any kind, even "free", so I used wet Viva papertowels so no residue on her hiney. Maybe look for creams without petroleum, or use talc?

I used this one, admittedly I only needed it rarely, but didn't have any issues with my diapers. I strip my once a month regardless, so I might have had some build up that I got rid of there.

The waterproof pore clogging issue has more to do with what you are washing them in. Nothing that would clog the pores. I use Charlies Laundry Soap and Tropical Traditions Oxygen Bleach which is great.

As for Lotions the one I swear by is Natren's Lifestart lotion for kids, also if it becomes necessary, it is most likely caused by what they are eating, if you follow the westonaprice.org guidelines for feeding healthy baby's it will clear up anything, a daily dose of Natren's Lifestart probiotics for kids also helps fix things a little more quickly. To find natren www.natren.com

Weleda's Calendula cream is pretty good as well.

I have used cloth diapers for 14 months now and occassionally have needed to use a diaper cream. First, make sure that the area is totally dry before you apply any sort of barrier cream. A&D is the best barrier out there, bar none. When using this, I reccomend that you put down a cloth diaper liner to protect the diaper. They sell flushable ones at Babies R Us and they work great. Once or twice I forgot to do this and the diaper is fine. However, prolonged use might decrease the absorbancy. You can also use cornstarch to help absorb moister and no need for a diaper liner. ANother mom suggested breast milk and I have also used this. Worked like a charm! You might also check out www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com. Lots of great info on cloth diapering, specific to the brand you are using. Good luck!

I used cloth before there was anything else. I always used Vaseline as a preventative, and A&D ointment for any problems. Both worked great, you just need to wash in HOT water, which we do anyway. Good luck.

Hey A.,
My baby hasn't had diaper rash yet (thanks to the cloth diapers I'm sure as my other son got a horrible rash all the time in disposables) but I have the flushable liners to use when I do need to put the cream on. So I haven't tried any of the very few diaper creams that they claim can be used with cloth diapers. But my advice is to buy the liners and then you can use any of the creams.
Don't you love cloth diapering?!

you're right, you can't use anything that acts as a water barrier unless you're using prefolds and can wash on hot with a harsher detergent. You have to be careful with the PUL because too much heat and detergents can damage it and it isn't waterproof anymore.
Check cloth diapering websites. I think I saw one the other day but I can't remember the website. Sew Crafty Baby maybe?
Breastmilk actually works REALLY well. Put it on, rub it in, let it dry, then diaper. Also, letting the area dry after cleaning before putting the new diaper on, direct sunlight, and cornstarch can all help the area from getting to a point you need cream in the first place.

Good Luck:) I love cloth, too!!

I've been using cloth for 19 months with my little girl. We don't put on diaper rash cream unless there is a problem. We just recently found a better alternative to a cream - California Baby's Diaper Area Wash. Instead of slathering on the cream, we just spritz this stuff on and it works in the same manner. :) Hope it works for you.
