I have 8 week old b/g twins and my little girl has reflux issues. I am taking her to a chiropractor this week to see if he can help. I would like to know if any of you have experiences with this. Was it successful? Did you have to go on a regular basis?

So What Happened?

I wanted to say "THANK YOU" to everyone who responded to my request. WOW...what a great group of ladies. It was especially helpful because my DH was very skeptical of the whole chiropractor thing. He became much more comfortable with the idea when he saw how many women have taken their children and had success. We have now been going for a couple weeks and it is going very well. The extra bonus on top of it all is that the Chiropractor we see loves children so much that he doesn't charge us a penny. What insurance doesn't cover he "eats". Anyway...thanks again for the overwhelming response...you ladies ROCK! :)

I took my infant to a chiropractor for reflux and he responded completely. He did need to see the chiropractor frequently at first, but I felt it was better then giving him frequent medicine. The reflux was gone in a matter of weeks.

I took my daughter at 8 wks, now 4yrs old, for colic. We went once a week for about a month and every two weeks for a month after that and that was it. My sister could tell the difference after one treatment and she didn't know I had taken my daughter to the chiropractor yet. I finally had a happy little girl and would recomend it to everyone.

Make sure your Chiropractor has worked with children first. I know many moms who have taken their babies for reflux and it has helped a great deal( my two did not have this problem as babies) but they go now monthly and its helped with other issues Bed wetting & pre asthma symptoms. It's a nice alternative to meds that have not even been studied in use on babies.

My son had reflux issues also, and I took him to the chiropractor, with great results. However, he was 4 months old. I switched his formula from Similac to a soy-based brand when he was around 8 weeks old, and that helped too. The chiropractor suggested to grind up Papaya Extract (it's natural and not a medication) and put it in his cereal when he started eating that around 5 months and that helped even more. Remember that all babies spit up...make sure that it's really a reflux issue before someone tries medications. That's why I chose more holistic methods and they worked wonderfully.

Hi S.
I also had a baby with acid reflux. He has been adjusted since he was 5 days old. He would have been adjusted sooner but my chiropractor was out of town. I have my son checked 1 time a week but he does not need to be adjusted every week. For your baby it will depend on how she holds her adjustements. Good luck and I hope that it works for you because it worked for my son.

Hi! I have 6 1/2 year old identical boy twins. I started taking both of them to a chiropractor at 6 months because of ear infections. They went every month until about 2 months ago. I was very happy with the treatment. I think it also kept them healthy. I worked full time during this period and they seemed to be sick a lot less compared to the other kids in day care. I go to a chiro myself. I would recommend it!

I wish someone would have told me about infant chiropractic care when my first child was born. Both my son and daughter were collicy babies with acid reflux. I did a lot of research when my second child was born as I was at my wits end as to how to ease her (and my) suffering!! At 2 months old, out of desperation I took her to my chiropractor and after 3 adjustments; the spitting up decreased immensely and she was not as fussy. It was a little undaunting at first visit as I was afraid of the adjustment hurting her, but it didn't and I recommend it to anyone suffering with collic! She hasn't been back since!

I highly recommend Chiropractic care. My whole family goes to Health and Healing Chiropractic in Andover and we love it. My older son had reflux and I wish we had found these guys earlier because I am sure it could have saved us all some headaches! My second son has been adjusted since he was a week old and hasn't had any of the intestinal issues his brother had. Also my older son didn't get an ear infection until he was 2 1/2 years old and until we joined a MOMS Club where we are constantly exposed to illnesses, was rarely sick. It is recommended that you go on a regular basis to maintain optimal health. If you are in the Andover area and would like it, I have a coupon for the initial visit that I would be happy to get to you. Good luck with the reflux. It is no fun!

My children both spit up a lot. We never took them to the doctor for an exact diagnosis of reflux but I had to change their clothes and mine multiple times a day because of this. Chiropractic care helped a lot. But you do need to keep up on it. I would bring them in about 2 or 3 times a month and then they would also show me where to massage on their stomaches to help at home in between adjustments. Look for a chiropractor that takes special classes and training on infants. (We've been to a few chiropractors and there are some not so good ones out there but now we've found one that has training for our needs.)

I started taking my son when he was little (I think it was before he was a year and a half). He really likes it. I don't have any idea what it does for him, but he seems happy to have the adjustments done.

For myself, going on a very regular basis makes my own reflux go away, but for me personally, I have to go at least once every 10 days to keep the reflux away. (I find it easy enough to deal with the reflux on my own, so I go every two weeks for my chronic neck problem.)

My chiropractors are a husband-wife team and they are very kid-friendly, and they have exceptional ethics and values. Their practice is so full, they have thought about hiring another chiro to come in and help, but they are worried they won't have the same "feel" with another outside person as they have now. (my son is treated for free, because they understand our financial position, and she wasn't willing to let my son suffer because of it. So they are not ALL out for just money.)

If you want to get a chiro for your baby, I say go for it, but be prepared for the costs, since it can quickly add up. Give it some time to see if there are results. find out beforehand if your insurance covers it (mine doesn't). And find out how long they expect it to be before you see results and what kind of "maintenance schedule" they would expect your baby to be on for coming back.

The chiropractors have done wonders for me, getting rid of 90% of my chronic pain. My back is "cured" and my neck pain is the only thing that keeps me coming back on a regular basis. (I am looking at alternatives like massage for that). Well, that and the amazing atmosphere of the practice- they are just awesome people. Shop around, chiros are not all the same!

best luck!

My son was considered a preemie ( six week early and 4lbs) and had reflux issues. I took him to a chiropractor and it helped him. He did massage - we went for two months. The first month twice a week and then once a week. I did take him once a month for two months after to make sure he was okay.
I took him off the medication a month before I started seeing the chiropractor. In my sons case the medication was not helping him (it was keeping his digestive system from working on its own --because he was a preemie). Find a chiropractor that will work with small children and good luck.

I have a recommendation for you. I have begun taking my 8 month old to Dr. Carla Breunig in St. Paul: www.rootswellcare.com
She is a chiropractor and also trained in cranio-sacral therapy and homeopathy. She is really good with my son -- gentle, sensitive, nice. Also, she was really great about checking with my insurance to see what my coverage was. I originally took my son for preventing ear infections but she looked and didn't see any swelling. I think I will keep taking him, though, b/c of all the great things everyone else has written about chiropracty and infants.

Chiropractors are amazing! My daughter has reflux as well as many other "issues". The chiropractor has helped tremendusly! We go twice a week every week only because they control her seizures and help her be regular. There are so many things that regular adjustments can fix. Some things you didn't even realize needed to be fixed. Infants respond very, very well to adjustments. My daughters chiropractor deals mainly with infants, children and expecting mothers, so I've seen many babies benefit. How often you go depends on your babies and the chiro. Good Luck and good for you!!

As a mother of 4 who's children have had Chiropractic care since day 1 following birth, I HIGHLY recommend this care!! Children respond very well to care - often way faster than adults - because they don't have near as much trauma to their bodies that us adults have. (oh, yeah - I'm also married to a Chiropractor!) The nerve controling the stomach leaves the spine at the 6th thoracic vertebrea so somewhere in this area is where they will probably check. (that's just above the middle of the back) I have no idea what treatment program that doc will recommend for your child. Some Chiropractors treat symptoms only which means they would see and adjust your child if/when there are symptoms presenting. Other Chiropractors treat the root cause of the problem so would set up treatment programs regardless of symptoms. These doctors use many other tests to find the problems. Treating the cause of the problem does require more treatment in the short term but much less treatment overall and is way less expensive overall. So, feel free to email me directly if you have questions or if I can help in any way. All 4 of our children have been under care since birth and have no health issues at all.

Hi S.,
I brought our kids to the chiro. It helped tremendously!
If I kept up with the treatments, it was great, if I slacked on the treatments, it got icky.....
There are different types of chiros. Some are specifically trained to work with children and infants. It's an additional training and certification.
Some chiros are GREAT and others are REALLY BAD!!! Look for referrals and references for good ones. AND Ask the chiros you're interested in for references from their patients. Check them out- it's the well- being of your child :)

Hope this helps :)

I don't take my kids for reflux, but I do use the chiropractor for them.
You do need to go for some time, usually 1-2 times a week for a couple of months, but not always. For reflux it would probably take that to get LONG lasting results. You can get immediate relief, but you need to get the entire reason fixed to make it last.
We go for ear infections. I have an ottoscope and checked my son one day when he was picking at his ear. His ear drum was about to burst! It was flaming red and bulging. I took him the next day and she adjusted him. The next day his ear was significantly better, and within 4 days it was just some red streaks left. That was just after one adjustment, I haven't checked him since the second adjustment, but he isn't touching his ear at all!
I also use the chiro for my son with learning disabilities and mercury poisoning from immunizations. She helped so much with his anger issues. It was summer, so we didn't get to test the grade issues. But he is doing so well now.
It is hard to make the choice of using a chiropractor over a one time dr. visit and meds, which is cheaper, but really, you want the issue to go away, not just be counter-acted with meds.

Dear S.,
I have a 16 yr old daughter that I had taken to the chiropractor when she was an infant. I was going because of an accident that I had & was talking to him about my daughter's problem she had with screaming when she had a bowel movement. I had to have a C-Section with her because she was twisted up inside & it had effected her bowels. Her reg. dr. did not do too much for her, and thougth I would try the chiro. She was doing so much better because of it & when my son ended up with asthma I took him to the same dr. & it had helped him with the asthma. I don't know if every chiropractor adjusts babies, but I saw a huge difference in my daughter when I took her. The dr. will explain many things before he does anything & answer any of your questions. Hope this helps.

My children have both been seeing a Chiro since they were born. I had reflux like issues with my oldest child and seeing a Chiropractor really helped him. We went pretty regularly at first, but then we were able to ease off a bit after we figured out some of his issues. It turned out that he couldn't tolerate when I had dairy products. (I was nursing.) My Chiro did muscle testing to see what foods gave my little guys issues. You may want to ask about that. If you don't have any luck with your Chiro, try Davis Chiropractic in St. Louis Park or Shorewood. They are the BEST!!! The sacrifice I made skipping dairy for awhile gave me a whole new, happy baby! I am SOOO glad I brought her in. (I wished I had brought my first child in to see a chiroprator, instead he had reflux for 9 months...)

Hi S.! We took both of our kids to the chiropractor when they were newborns. My son had a traumatic birth and needed a few adjustments before his problems resolved. My daughter had reflux and went once a week for a month or so. after that, we spaced her adjustments out to twice monthly and then to once a month for about 3 months. You will be able to tell when she needs another adjustment so you can go as many or as few times as you like.
I hope I explained it accurately! It seems like a lot when you write it all out but it didn't seem like an inconvenience at the time:) of course, my daughter got such relief from the adjustments that it was worth it.
Also, we used a product called Gripe Water by Wellements (Baby Bliss is another brand) that helped. We did these things as well as Zantac and it really helped!

Our regular didn't encourage us to do it but he said we could try. Within about 2 weeks of regular treatment she was turning and she has been fine ever since. I will warn you that it is very hard to watch them adjust an infant like that, I cried but I know it didn't hurt her, it was just startling. Good luck, it's certainly worth the try and I do put value in Chiropractic care although we are not regular users.

I have not had any experience with reflux but have had a tone of Chiropractor experience's. My mom works for a great Chiro. so I have been going for a long time due to headaches. When my son was born (6 weeks premature)I had him in a week after I brought him home from the hospital for colic(SP) still being on a heart monitor. Not ALL chiroprators adjust the same and it is not a "scary" thing to watch. The way my Chiro. (Kyle) adjusts little ones is with is thumbs. He feels the spine, neck, etc, and then gently pushes them back into place. All done while sitting either on my lap or the bed. The kids really actually enjoy it. It relaxes them. If you would like his name and # let me know.

All 3 of my children go see a chiropractor regularly. I do not have specific appointments for them, but when they start to act up we go in to get them 'straightened out'. Them they actually behave better.

It all started with my oldest, who did have reflux- severe reflux, so we were doing anything we could to help him out. It does help, also with ear infections, and just when they are sick. It is amazing how out of whack these kids get, and also how they actually LIKE to be adjusted. My littlest one is 2 1/2, and he was adjusted when he was 3 days old. We go in about every other month, and he has been the healthiest child I have had.

I hope this helps.

Lots of experience! My baby was born with the cord around her neck and I had her adjusted the day she was born. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree and I wanted all her little vertebrae aligned from the beginning to prevent big problems in the future.

Also, if there is a misalignment in and area where the nerves from her spine go to organs like her stomach, getting that straightened out may help it go away. I've seen it help friends. I've also seen reflux happen from food intolerances.
Your chiropractor may be able to help you with that as well, many chiropractors are well informed about nutritional issues. If he/she is not, they may well know of a resource for you.

Because when a vertebrae is misaligned it may return to it's yucky position, it's important to train it to stay in the right place, which may take multiple visits. Follow the DC's recommendations. Go to websites like idealspine.com in the patient section, or chiroweb if you want.

You should probably all be checked out. If someone has a spine, it needs maintenance, just like teeth. Especially with all the falls kids take all the time. Symptoms are the last thing to show up, usually.

We LOVE our chiropractor. I can't imagine our kids growing up without one. Both kids have been seen regularly since they were infants (my son was about 2 days old when our chiropractor first did cranial-sacrial (sp?) work on him).
Kids get so many bumps and have so many tumbles...I've seen them sleep better, move out of defiant/cranky moods, have fevers resolve, etc...after appointments.
I currently have a 6 1/2 yr old daughter, and an almost 4 yr old son. We see a soft-touch chiropractor, which means she doesn't do the major crunch things some chiropractors do, but man, is she powerful.
Both my husband and I have seen several chiropractors, but this one in i.c. is by far the best.

If you have questions or want to know how to contact our chiro, you can reach me at ____@____.com.

I hope I am not too late in responding. I have taken my daugher to the Chiropractor since the day she came home from the hospital. I spent a great deal of time in the field and would recommend it to any mom and dad with kids. My daughter has been very healthy so far in her life (she's 2.5yrs) She has never had an ear infection and until this year had not even been on an antibiotic. Not to mention that if you look online, chiropractic can help to reduce the instance of SIDS as well as colic and other issues like colds and ear infections. It is a very natural approach that I would recommend a million times over. Also, just so you know she visits the chiropractor about once every 2 months for maintenence (with all of the climbing/jumping/falling etc it is good)

For you: I would recommend that you plan a visit as well. Pregnancy/delivery is very traumatic to your body and carrying twins...WOW! I hope this helps.

We went to a different formula and that helped a little too. I never thought to bring him to a chiropractor for it and personally I'm glad I didn't because he grew out of it on his own. I hear that with a chiropractor you have to keep going back. I'm not saying that it will or won't work, I just thought I'd give you my opinion on this. If you do bring your baby there I'd like to hear if it actually worked. Good Luck.

I have had several friends that have used this type of treatment for their child's reflux issues and they found it very helpful. They did have to go back a few times, but they noticed the difference with in the first few visits.
