Can Anyone Recommend a Baby Sling Brand?

I'm due in 7 weeks with baby number 3 and I'm interested in trying a sling. I've noticed a lot of brands and styles out there. A friend recommended Bali but that seems so complicated. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I like the Moby Wrap. It's reasonably priced and comfortable. I did not like the Peanut Shell sling. I thought it was uncomfortable.

hey J., i love the mayawrap. i am currently using one w/ my 7 week old and have used the same sling exclusively w/ two of my older children from baby to toddlerhood. mayawrap.com. i like the size large, i have extra fabric from the tail of the sling to wrap around my baby when it's chilly out and more to drape over her for privacy when nursing. good luck! the baby book, by dr.sears, has a chapter on baby wearing. there are many different ways you can position your baby in the sling.

I had my son in July, and I had also thought about a sling. I did a lot of research, because if I was going to spend the money I wanted to actually use it!
I settled on something called a mai tei. It's a type of baby carrier that is ajustable for newborns, front carry (facing you and out), side carry for toddlers, and also a backpack. I found it on the babies r us website, and I use it constantly! Once you get the hang of putting it on (and it's not that complicated) it's really fast...plus my son loves it. It also comes with an attachable blanket cover so baby can stay nice and cozy. I would definately take a look and see what you think. I don't know what I would have done without it!

I found Hotslings to be best when they're small, and Maya Wrap to be easier when they're bigger and riding on your hip. The Hotsling isn't adjustable, but if you go to their website and follow the measuring instructions, you'll get a good fit.

With my older kids, I always used ring slings, such a s the cheap Nojo ones. I actually liked that pretty well because it's easy to adjust those to a custom size.

With my current baby, I bought a hotsling. I liked it quite a bit.

But then my sister got an ERGO. I tried it out with my (then) 18 pound 7 month old, AND 35 pound 4 year old, and it was VERY comfortable to use with both of them. I bought my own that same week...LOL.

I LOVE my Ergo carrier. We use it everyday. My baby is now 14 months, and very active, but he just LOVES to be in the carrier. I love that it is easy to use, comfortable, and that I can carry him for a long time without getting sore.

They cost a lot ($100-ish), but it is SO worth it!

My baby is 4 months and I've used cute slings and hot slings...I like the cute slings much better. It's pricier, but I feel like the fabric is much more forgiving and easier to use! Good luck! This is my 2nd and the sling has been a life saver...especially at church on Sunday morning!!

rockin' baby sling is awesome. it's a little more pricey, but it's made much better and constructed to carry the baby more comfortably. my daughters liked it much better than the slings that were just one straight piece of fabric, plus they had lots of cute patterns. it was a lifesaver when i had my second daughter so i could play with my toddler!

Here is a great site, complete with reveiws: http://www.thebabywearer.com/

I am part of a Babywearing group. We have a carrier library, and you are welcome to come to a meeting and check it out. The group is a nonprofit, support group. We will also provide help with how to use baby carriers. We meet on the second Saturday of each month in Oakland County. The next one is Saturday 11/8 2pm at Good Food (in the cafe) in Troy.

For a newborn, I think a pouch or a ringsling is an excellent choice. They are both easy to nurse in. A pouch is good if your the only one who will be using it and your weight is fairly stable. Otherwise, I would recommend an adjustable pouch or a ringsling.

A wrap is also great, but the learning curve is a bit more.

Please feel free to send me a message if you have any specific questions.

I also HIGHLY recomend the Ergo. I bought mine when my daughter was 12 mos and wish I hadn't waited so long. She is around 25 lbs and 19 mos now and I can still very comfortably wear her. It works on the front or back. As previously mentioned as an infant you would need an insert but the ergo is very much worth the cost. The quality is excellant. Someone mentioned it works up to 35 lbs. It actually can support more but my guess is it wouldn't be comfortable to carry a 90lb kid. This is directly from the Ergo website:

14 ounce cotton canvas for maximum durability

400 threads per inch cotton poplin lining and hood

100% cotton batting in body of carrier to soften edges

One inch, high density foam in shoulder straps

Quarter inch high density neoprene foam in waist belt

High Quality buckles tested by SGS

Waist belt circumference from 25" to 43"

Fits from 5' to 6.5' body height with adjustable shoulder and chest straps

Sleeping hood adjusts in length to growth of baby

Reinforcement stitching used at all fabric intersections

Interior rip-stop reinforcements at critical intersections

High quality black webbing

Durability/strength tested up to 90 pounds

machine washable, gentle cycle

When my daughter was a newborn we used a pouch sling. It worked well but I wonder if the hotsling would have been nicer because I hear it has a little stretch to it. Mine was from

Hi J.,
You can go to Hotslings.com and they have wraps on there that are custom. You measure from shoulder to hip bone, and they make it the right size so that there is no buckle or anything. I know several people who have used these and loved them.

I dig my Bjorn, but I know that's not really a sling.

I guess one that I would not recommend is the Boppy sling. Seriously, I thought it was like rocket science to figure out. It was just too complicated to finagle while trying to not piss off a newborn. Although, that could have just been me. : )

I have heard good things about the Maia and the Ergo.

Good luck!

I also loved my maya wrap (it's a ring sling)you can change the kids position with out taking them out. I found it more comfortable than the back pack looking kind. And there way more versatile. If you ask someone here would probably let you come over and check out there sling, and teach you how to use them. You could probably find someone on this list who sells them.

I loved my Maya wrap. A good place to find out about all sorts of slings is at your local La Leche League group. Check online for the one nearest to you :)

I'd recommend an ERGO baby carrier for when your little one is a little older, they have infant inserts too but they look lik they might be complicated.

There are lots of wraps... I used a over the shoulder one cause I hated the MAYAN wrap.. it was too hot for me.

I would NOT recommend really any store bought wraps though. They often end up recalled and in my opinion are really not very helpful.

I actually have a friend in Rochester that would most likely be willing to help you with slings.. she has a few. Let me know.

You could take a trip to Tree City Diapers in Ann Arbor and they could help you out.. or check out your closest LLL.. there are usually lots of babywearers there.
