If a baby is breech does that slow down the natural process of going into labor?
I'm 36 weeks pregnant and baby is breech, I'm getting an external version done on Friday. I'm just wondering-- if they successfully get the baby turned, will it help with getting labor started?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey guys! Thanks for all your answers, they were very helpful!
I went in for my version yesterday and it was NOT successful :(
(And I am very sore and bruised today...ouch!)
Even though they couldn't get her to turn, they did not schedule a c-section because I still have weeks before my due date and she may turn on her own before then.
Although the procedure was a failure, I appreciate that they tried.
I will try some of those home remedies to try and get her to turn on her own.
If I HAVE to have a c-section then so be it. As long as she gets her safely, I'm alright with whatever method they have to do to get her here.

Thanks again SO much!
:)

My daughter was breech from 20 weeks on. I went to the acupuncturist, did the legs on the wall, etc, etc, nothing worked. Was told the version was 50/50, if it would work and could cause complications. I decided not to do it and just schedule the c section. It was awesome. The safest for the baby, and I was nursing 35 min after they took her out of me. My recovery was just and easy as a vaginal, and my downtheres are good as new! Plus, my tummy is back to being flat. I personally loved my c section, mostly because I felt it was the safest for the baby. Scheduled c section, I think, is very different than emergency c section. Sometimes I think women get so bent on the experience of child birth that they forget what really counts is a healthy happy baby. I happen to cherish every moment of my daughters birth, it was still so amazing for me and my husband! I loved it!

It can, so find out what is the last possible date they will try and turn the baby. I tried a version at 37 weeks along with every thing else in the book! :)

Spinning babies is good, so is accupuncture and moxibustion. Alas, mine didn't budge and I could not find a doctor who would deliver breech in San Diego County! Grrr.

My midwives (planned homebirth) and I were going to go forward with a vaginal because I truly believe that a vaginal breech birth when attended by a competent and experienced midwife or ob/gyn is SAFEST. A c-section carries more risks than the situation I described above.

Needless to say, at the last minute, we all balked and it turned out the baby had too short a cord to even descend, so I did have a c-section. I wasn't happy about it, but it had a good outcome.

Try everything you can including interviewing ob/gyns to deliver that baby vaginally! Good luck mama!

My DD was breach feet down and head up she stomped on my lower "goods" for most of my pregnancy ouch. My doc said i could get the version done but will be very painful. and if i go into labor it was going to be a c-section anway. I will tell you that a c-section is not all that bad. I went into labor three weeks early I had been in labor for two days and just thought it was back pain.
Anyway the c-section was a breeze. I was up and around the following day and did not take any pain meds except extra strength tylonal and motrin. The worst pain was the gas build up in my neck. I have a feeling that regular delivery is much more painful. If i were you i would rethink the version.
Has your doc gone over all of the "things" that can go wrong. ie the cord getting wrapped around baby, premature labour, it not taking the baby could always go back into position. my prayers are with you. good luck

I saw on A Baby Story or something similar to that on tv a woman who would stand on her head to turn the baby. It worked! I wasn't convinced that it would actually work so I asked my OB and he said it can work and I looked it up online and found some success stories. It's worth a shot! Good luck!

Goood luck on the version! My son was complete breech and I chose not to go with th version and had a c-section. I went into labor 3 days before my due date but I have heard that the process of version can cause you to go into premature labor. Most providers will NOT deliver a baby breech. The labor pain is worse and it is dangerous. I hope the version works for you if its a vaginal delivery you wish for.

Hi! I'm so glad I read your post. It sounds like you already have a procedure planned to turn your baby. However, my husband is a chiropractor and he is 10 for 10 on turning babies that are breech with the Webster technique. It's one adjustment that gets the baby turned around! It's possible that it can stimulate labor but his patients have all gone full-term. His office is Discover Chiropractic and is located on 92nd and Olde Wadsworth in the same parking lot as Carraba's. Call if you want to talk with him about this technique: ###-###-#### and his name is Dr. Keppen Laszlo. Take care!

It might help, but in reality you are just 36 weeks. Your baby probably has not reached full lung maturity and until the baby releases the hormonal signal to your body that it is ready to be born labor won't start. Be patient, if this is your first baby your likely to go past your due date. I know your probably uncomfortable, but for your baby's sake, please give it time. It isn't fun to have your baby go to the NICU because he wasn't quite ready for the world yet!

My baby was also breech by my 36 week appt she was fine before the external version was to be decided. Most OBs will not doa delivery if baby is breech some aren't specialized in that area for the risks involved.I did a search for breeech and there was alot of info thsi is what I ended up doing frozen packs of veggies on the babes head off and on then at nite I used a flash light went all over my belly pointed down.My baby turned it was very painful it was she turned the week that she did or would ghave to have a C-section.I don't know if these really helped put all that mattered to me was that she turned its worth a try to avoid the external version

Sometimes if the baby is not well engaged (deep in the pelvis) it doesn't encourage labor to start. That's a good thing in the case of an external version because it will make the baby easier to turn. Some babies will still turn on their own, even after 36 weeks. There are also providers who deliver breech babies vaginally, so if the version does not work you may choose to seek them out to avoid c-section if that is your desire.

Two of my boys--both over 10 pounds each--were breech right up until delivery. They both flipped a few days before my due date, on their own. In both pregnancies, they tried to turn the babies, but it never worked. The babies turned when they were ready. The point of telling you the weight is that even really big babies have enough room to turn. Our bodies are amazing!

I wouldn't give up on your kiddo just yet. At 36 weeks my 2nd son was breech and my MD gave me a week and a half to turn him myself before we tried version and then a C-section if that didn't work. So for the next week, I tried LOTS with my doula...sitting upside-down (which made me REALLY dizzy), having people talk at the bottom of my belly, ice pack at the top of my belly with warm pack at the bottom (they don't like the cold so turn away from it- got him to go transverse that way), using a flashlight to "direct" the way down...the only things I didn't get to try was the chiropractor, diving into a swimming pool and doing somersaults in the water and the hypnobabies "turn the baby" track. As a last attempt the night before my last ultrasound and appointment before trying version, I told my hubby...you need to take control of this baby and tell him to turn around in your "daddy" voice...so my hubby says "M__, listen here...this is your daddy and I expect you to turn head down" and then he "spanked" where his bottom was. We all laughed and went to bed...well sure enough, that kid turned (didn't feel him or anything...just went in to have the u/s and was sad because I was sure he was still head up, but the u/s tech says...nope, that's a head!!!!!!!!). And I was SO relieved. And on top of that, I got to deliver my son as a VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section- yes, my first son was C-section- just a regular C-section...not an emergency or anything)!!!

My recovery was MUCH quicker than my c-section (just remember, that it is major abdominal surgery and is not all peaches and cream- and no, you don't get a flat stomach from c-section versus vaginal...I had to laugh at that one)- although I won't lie to you...whether you deliver vaginally or c-section...day 2 SUCKS...but each day after gets better and better!!! To answer your question, yes it should help if they get the baby turned, but if this is your first baby, you could easily end up going to 40-42 weeks either way...so if vaginal is what you want and they get him turned, avoid talking induction until AT LEAST 41 weeks (know it's hard at that point, but it will be well worth it)...my VBAC came at 40 weeks 3 days!

If I ever get pregnant again (and I hope I do) and having had both a vaginal birth (VBAC) and a c-section, I would 100% go for the V2BAC!!! Recovery difference for me (from delievery to feeling almost 100%) was probably 2 weeks VBAC (with a 2nd degree tear and stitches that never fully dissolved so had to go get them removed...think prob would have been 1 week if the stitches would have dissolved) versus 8-10 weeks with my C-section. Also remember that with a c-section, you are reliant on someone else for far longer because you are not supposed to drive by yourself until about 6 weeks and you really shouldn't carry the heavy baby carrier until then or later either! Good luck with your birth. I hope your baby turns on its own!
