I was just invited to an event taking place in 2 weeks and would like to lose a little of this "winter weight" I've been carrying around since last winter!:-) I'm a pretty healthy eater but it's crept up on me and stayed. What are your favorite ways to lose a little weight (anything b/t 5-10 lbs.) in a little time? I know all about long term eating habits and how quick weight loss doesn't stick, etc. But when you want to jump start a diet program and slim down a bit quickly, what have you had success with? Atkins? South Beach? Detox?Cutting out snacks and upping cardio? I would love your first hand stories of what worked best for you. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

It's defiantly NOT the best way, but the stomach flu will drop you down by at least 5 lbs in next to no time at all. We've got a nasty bug going around and my 11 yr old boy is home sick with it. He'll not be eating anything more solid than ginger ale, Gatorade, and Pedialyte for 2 or 3 days.

Hi SE---I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you cannot healthfully lose10 lbs in 2 weeks. You could, however, lose 4-6 easily.

Don't think of specific diets. Eat for your health. It is a lifetime commitment. Consume mostly fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes (beans), nuts and seeds. I would cut back on the grains, in order to lose faster. Count the grams of fiber that you eat. The more fiber, the fewer calories you will consume. I went on a candida reduction diet and I lost pretty quickly.

No alcohol or simple sugars (white bread, rice, or any processed foods), use olive oil and lemon juice as a salad dressing (it's actually quite tasty) with herbs for flavoring. I didn't eat alot of fruit but when I did it was mostly berries. When you eat other fruits, be sure to have something with fiber and a little healthy fat with it: almonds with an apple and boiled egg, almond butter on toast with fruit for breakfast, etc

You'll do fine eating quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and wild rice in small amounts. I would make great salads with broccoli slaw, half a can of thai tuna, some brown rice and then something crunchy on top. I also like to roast a big pan of root veggies, brussel sprouts, fennel bulb, etc and use those as part of a big veggie salad. Another great salad I make is with a bed of spinach, red onion, beets (you can find already cooked beets at Trader Joe's) feta or goat cheese and candied pecans with basalmic vinegar and olive oil as a dressing. I also have a recipe for a spinach and quinoa salad you might like.

I am taking a series of classes taught by a naturopath who has her PhD in nutrition. So I have alot of great info I can share with you. Feel free to contact me. And YES, get more exercise, but be careful if you are just starting out. You'll need to work out more to get down to the fat stores. But have fun, think of the end result and it will all be worth it.

Good luck, D.

I highly recommend the South Beach diet. It is a good diet to stick to anyway, but usually you see some results quite quickly. You start it with a 2 week fast from all sugars, including breads, potatoes, pasta, fruit. Then, you can add back in good carbs, like whole wheat and some fruit. But, it is not uncommon to lose 5-10 pounds in the first two weeks. I got headaches at first because of the detox effect of going off of sugar. But, once I got over that, I felt so much better all around! It's not as hard as it sounds, and so worth it. Get the book, and get going on it! You can do it.

My brother-in-law is a marine and he would use a three-day diet that would help him make weight for their routine weigh-ins. It's easy enough to look up on the internet, I think all you have to do is do a search for 3 day diets, it really does work-it's just not enjoyable. Exercising and drinking plenty of water will also help to maximize your results, but it's definitely not a long-term thing. Good luck!

cut out all soda, sugar, junk food type snacks. Only grab fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, etc for snacks. Drink a ton of water.... I mean till you think you will burst! Cut out dairy, fruit juices, things that have sugar in them and you don't realize it.
There are tons of "cleanse" diets out there where you only eat certain foods -usually raw that help you drop weight fast.
But I have had the most success just cutting out soda and sugar. I have never given up carbs or anything like that. Drinking tons of water. Yogart is pretty good to help you- but it does have sugar so make sure you are not getting it from anywhere else. My husband lost about 30 pounds from eating yogart only for 2 meals and all snacks each day- eating whatever he wanted for dinner(or breakfast) and drinking only water but that was over like 3 months.
Upping cardio or any excercise will also help jumpstart your weight loss. Eat breakfast!!! Don't skip it. But I was told to drink a lot of water and do my cardio before eating breakfast- for one thing you probably won't pig out and your body is working harder to burn off fat before you eat, otherwise it is burning off what you just ate instead of what is hanging around on your body.
Making healthy choices just works- my friend lost 8 pounds in about 2 weeks just by cutting out soda, fast food, junk food, not eating late at night (packing her lunch for work) and doing wii fit. She has kept it up (mostly) and is up to losing about 15 pounds now since beginning of Feb- i think.
Hope this helps :)
