Infant Baby Slings - Granger, IN

I'm looking for advice from those of you who have experience with carrying your baby in a sling. It seems like if would be convenient for breastfeeding and free me up a little more to interact with my older child. What brand is best? Has anyone tried the Maya sling (seems to be the big thing in magazines) Or has anyone made their own and is this safe? Thanks for any help you can offer.

What can I do next?

I have a ring sling that I made from a pattern that I actually found on the maya wrap website. http://www.mayawrap.com/n_sewsling.php
It's simple to make, my baby loves it, and it's great to BF in.
Plus, Maya has instructional videos on all the carries and how to thread it which are very helpful.
I don't know how I ever managed before I had it.
Hope this helped.

Hi R.!

I wore Brighton all the time (when I remember I still do). It took a while to get used to, but after I figured it out I wore him all the time. I got my first one from www.sleepingbaby.org then I bought one from a friend at my nursing group who makes them, then I started making my own. Sleeping baby has instructions on how to make them yourself. They are surprisingly easy. I would definitely recommend purchasing or making a pouch and a ring sling. Pouches are great too and less material, but not as easy for BFing. I liked sleeping baby's and the ones I made because they weren't bulky and I liked the way the shoulder fit.

You probably can't go wrong with any of them! It just depends on how they feel to you and how much you want to spend :)

I never felt comfortable with my sling. I enjoyed my snugli better. I guess I just felt she would fall out but I've seen some pros with the sling and it looks wonderful if you can get the hang of it. I ended up giving mine to a friend and she liked it! :)

I got my sling from a local Des Moines WAHM who also has an online store. Her website is www.wallypop.net She not only has slings, but almost every carrier available to wear your baby. She also has instructions for several carries for each carrier on her site as well. You can choose your fabric, and add little personal touches. I loved my sling, and when Makaya got too heavy for it, I made a wrap to put her in, and she still rides in style even though she's 24#'s and 27 months old.

If you are near the Des Moines area, there is a group called NINO (Nine In Nine Out)that meets once a monh that can help you learn to wear your baby. I don't have their website right handy, but if you send me an e-mail, I'll dig it up and get it to you as well. ____@____.com

Good Luck!

i have a maya wrap and love it, but it took a long time to get the hang of it, so don't give up! i watched the video that came with it, but it still took a while for us to adjust. (i found it PERFECT for hip-carrying too, when my baby got old enough to be a hip-rider.) if you practice (and have enough patience), you can breastfeed hands-free! i have friends with other slings, and i think most of them take a while to get used to, but if you're patient, it's a very nice way to keep your baby attached. stick with it, and take care!!

I have lots of experience wearing my babies. :) I never wore my first one, but with number two I learned how. I chose a maya sling style because you can download the pattern off their website. I am a doula, and one in our doula group makes them (cindy Harvey) and one sells maya wraps(Kat Hickey). Check out the website http://www.fortwaynedoula.com and contact them with questions. I've used both - and they are great!! I don't know where you live, but its always helpful to have someone show you how to wear the baby. It can be difficult at first figuring out where they baby parts go. :) If you're near Ft. Wayne IN I can help.

I used an Over The Shoulder Baby Holder with both of my boys. You can buy them from www.babyholder.com. They have a gazillion different patterns and sizes from S to XXXL. They make an instructional video which I found very useful -- without it I think I would have tied myself up in knots. A friend of mine was able to latch her baby on and breastfeed handsfree, but I was never able to manage that, so that's a YMMV thing.

Everyone I have talked to likes the Maya-style sling and the Moby-style wrap. Good luck!
