At What Age Did Your Infant/toddler Go from 2 Naps to 1? - Dundee,IL

My daughter is 10 months and still goes down for her morning nap by 10am (up usually by 7am in the morning). She will sleep for about 2 hours. As of this past week she has been fighting that afternoon nap... this feels so early for her to be doing this. She normally goes to bed around 7pm for the night. Any advise or is it about this time to push back that morning nap a little bit?

What can I do next?

Around 10 months. When he started doing what you're describing, I cut out the morning nap and had him take one afternoon nap.

#1 took 2 naps until he was 3.5 and then 1 nap until he was almost 5.

#2 took 1 nap from birth until he was 3!

#3 took 2 naps until she was about 9-10 months old and then 1 nap until 2 years old and is almost 3 and will nap ONLY if she's in the car.

All of our kids went to bed at 7:30pm from birth....and our 8 year old still does.

I thought my son was dropping his nap at about 10mo... turned out he just needed tylenol for a week or two because his mouth was hurting from teething.

About a month after learning to walk I thought again he was dropping a nap... turned out he just needed to go down about an hour earlier. He was "overtired" and so couldn't sleep/ threw fits/ was super cranky.

He dropped his morning nap shortly before age 2, and his afternoon nap a little after turning 3.

Each time his bedtime got about an hour earlier.

About 11 months. My son (now 1)would take his morning nap and then threw fit during his afternoon one. Now he gets up anywhere between 8-9am (I know, lucky me) and takes 40 min to an hour nap around 1pm and then bedtime at 8 pm sharp. Sleeps for 12 hours without waking. It was hard to switch to the new routine for me, because I was so used to having time to myself when he slept twice a day...

That is exactly when my daughter gave up her 2nd nap. And your daughter's sleep/nap schedule sounds like my daughter's. What I did was give her a snack at 10am then keep her up until 10:30 before putting her down for a nap. After a couple of days she naturally started to want to nap at 11am for 3 hours. She is now 20 months and still napping 3 hours, although these days she likes to go down between 11:15 and 11:30. HTH.

My DD is 9 months, and dropped her second nap last month. It really sucked, too, since that was my quiet time! But she dropped it, and it really messed with her if I tried to force the issue... so she gets a nap now from 12:00is until around 2:00 (usually), and bedtime is usually around 8:30.

Usually in child care babies start laying down and go to one nap around the age you are describing. The reason is they are moved to the toddler room at their first birthday. They only get one nap a day in the toddler room so they have to be down to the one nap per day at that point. So, I think it's a natural progression around that age to go to one nap from about 11:30 to 1:39 or 2. Mine went down closer to noon and slept until about 3:30.

My firstborn didn't drop from 2 naps to 1 until 18 mos (and that was because the Montessori she was starting did 1 nap in that room) -- she LOVES her sleep! My 2nd dropped from 2 to 1 around 12 months...and that was with fighting it for a few months. He sleep GREAT at night though-- used to be 7pm-7am...now about 750pm-7am.

What time do you do your daughter's afternoon nap? Did you think about moving the morning nap up a half hour and not letting it last past an hour or hour and a half? My kids woke around 7am and did 9-1030 am naps (woke on their own most of the time) and 2-330 or 4pm afternoon naps when they were on 2 naps.

Good luck with the transition!

At 13-14 mo. my DD started taking a really short morning nap and then was having trouble taking a PM nap at all - this was after consistent 2 hour naps for AM and PM. I kept her up until about 11, and then put her down for one nap, and I think we made bedtime a little earlier for a little while. Gradually I moved the nap back further until it was closer to 1:00, and that nap soon became almost 3 hours. Had to keep her pretty busy in the morning so that she wasn't falling asleep or too grumpy. It didn't take too long though! AND, she also started sleeping later in the morning (until around 8 instead of 7).

You may have a period of time where you go back and forth between 2 and 1. Try to keep bedtime earlier during the transition.

Good luck! You'll love having mornings free!
